DH and the washing machine

Just looking for some perspective on this as sometimes I think I'm going mad. We returned last night from a week's holiday - obviously with the usual dirty laundry and like most women I'm keen to crack on and get the laundry started and out on the line. This morning DH got the cases in from the car so I thought I'd get the first wash load on ahead of going out to get groceries for us as well as my demented mother to whom I would need to deliver said groceries.[Lives alone with a small care package] and obviously haven't seen her so would need to catch up and make sure she's O.K, etc
DH fully aware of this plan [and the fact that I always start the washing as soon as the cases are in from the car]. He was taking our dog out for a run whilst I cracked on with above jobs. No issue with that - usual routine. However the next thing I can hear the washing machine going so I asked DH what was in the washing machine. Dog towels he says. Dog towels says I? What? Now - today when I've got a case load of dirty holiday washing to do? Yes, you guessed it - all this hot weather and he decides to put a load of muddy dog towels on that he's been storing in his boot since the last wet weather so obviously not newly muddy or needed to be washed today or likely to be used imminently given the current heatwave. He does not understand why under the above circumstances I'm so cross that he has prioritised laundering the bloody dog towels. So, AIBU to be really cross with DH this morning as he seems to think so having just stormed out with said dog ? [So as not to drip feed he has form fror this kind of thing and often has his own agenda where it doesn't occur to him to consider anyone else's needs.]

I’m quite impressed 😀my husband would have just dumped them on the utility room floor

Sound like a miserable household full of moaning and contempt for unimportant things

My dp does the same, as I posted above. He'll put the washing in the machine, and that is all he does. The emptying, hanging up, taking off the line, and delivering to various rooms - that ends up being me.
We don't have a tumble dryer. no space.

WimbyAce · 28/06/2025 18:56

I think this is more on you inviting people round the day after you get back from holiday. It just piles the pressure on.

Zombiefluff · 28/06/2025 18:55

@redskydelight can I suggest staying in places that have washing machines, and washing it (or most of it) before you come home?

This is the only thing more depressing than the OP’s outlook.

Yanbu, exactly the sort of thing my oh would do. Makes out he is being helpful but really he is being the opposite.

It's only one week's washing. It can wait a day or two.

The PP is joking.

YABU for getting back last night and not putting a load on overnight. It could be dry by now.

Take a break and relax, is it really a big deal? No

is it a minor inconvenience, heh tiny but not even worth talking about

just put another load in afterwords and get on with your life

life is too short and precious to hold grudges over a stupid washing machine, he’s actually doing washing, learn to let go a little more and try and focus on what actually matters in life

I couldn't agree more. In the scheme of things? Not important.

DiscoBob · 28/06/2025 18:28

Surely it just delayed the wash you wanted to do by an hour or so? Not the end of the world.

You say most women want to immediately do laundry as soon as they return from holiday but I'm not so sure if that's the case. I can't think of anything less appealing/necessary.

But each to her own. I wouldn't get too het up about the fact he blocked the machine for one wash though. In this weather it'll dry super quickly anyway.

redskydelight · 28/06/2025 18:21

I think he's not a mind reader and no reason why he shouldn't wash the dog towels.

If you'd been that desperate to get the washing on, you would have put it on last night. Or actually, can I suggest staying in places that have washing machines, and washing it (or most of it) before you come home?

Welshmonster · 28/06/2025 18:19

He can put next load on then.

Ontherocksthisyear · 28/06/2025 18:11

And you posted this on MN, Jesus Christ.

DH would do.this. on the stupid eco 4 hour wash. the dog absolutely wouldn't care, unlike the teenager who cannot wear any thing but what is in the suitcase and not her extensive floordrobe.

DH was quite happy not cooking for a decade but noticing I'd switched the oven on at an uncharacteristic time of day, 10am, switched it off to conserve fuel. It was Christmas and yes the turkey was in there.
His fucking mother congratulated me on having a DH who took notice of kitchen things.

OMG I hope you had a double width patio built.

I never understand this tit for tat pettiness

Nor me. Do you think adults in relationships actually behave like this?

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 28/06/2025 18:04

UnPetitCochon · 28/06/2025 17:44

This is why I have 2 washing machines!!

But do you also have 2 dishwashers??

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 28/06/2025 18:03

I am v amused by the idea most women want to crack on with the washing.. I didn’t get that lady gene.

I don’t think it’s a big deal but it does sound like he’s maybe getting away with quite light domestic duties? Maybe you have suppressed rage about that??

I hope you had a nice day with your guests

BBQBertha · 28/06/2025 17:57

I don’t think it’s an overreaction. I see it as the straw that broke the camel’s back. It’s just thoughtless and more than likely, not the first time. What an idiot! I’d wash my own stuff and leave his to make a point. Chances are, he won’t do it again.

Aulddeacon · 28/06/2025 17:57

Get a service wash and do other jobs when it’s getting done .
pick it up later washed and dried.

Zombiefluff · 28/06/2025 17:51

Such an over reaction. He’s not a mind reader and you don’t own the washing machine. Your want to wash the holiday clothes doesn’t trump him wanting to wash the dog towels.
He put a wash on first, big deal.

“and like most women I'm keen to crack on and get the laundry started and out on the line.”
Well this is depressing.

NewMrsF · 28/06/2025 17:50

Husband probably saw the dirty towels caked in mud and thought “oh shit I best get these washed asap before they’re any worse”. And his awful sounding wife hates him for it and runs to mums net to slag him off.

Mimilamore · 28/06/2025 17:49

I’m with you, this sort of thoughtlessness really gets to me, my husband does it all the time, today’s example being starting a long overdue, dusty, messy garden project when we ‘ve got visitors tomorrow. Wouldn’t mind so much but he walks away at the end leaving the mess, doesn’t see a problem 🙄

WalkingWavy · 28/06/2025 17:48

I do all the washing in the house. In the winter when we’re drying things indoors (no tumble dryer) he used to put a washing on when I’d just hung one up. No room to hang his anywhere so would sit in the washing machine getting stale. Would drive me crazy so now the laundry is my job. Men never think ahead to the next step do they

UnPetitCochon · 28/06/2025 17:44
