To think there are jobs in the world which no human being should be doing?

ConstantIllness · 28/06/2025 09:32

Abattoir workers
Online child sex abuse investigators
Are 2 in particular that spring to mind. They require people to become numb to pain and suffering.
In anticipation of snarky replies: no, I don't know how else they should be done and yes, I know there's always been pain and suffering. It's at an industrial scale now though.
Maybe it takes a certain kind of human to do it, which is worrying in itself.

Exactly what I was going to say. I realize that there are people out there who don't pay their debts when they can actually afford to,but equally, there are lot of people who have got into rent or council tax arrears and are generally struggling. Sending the bully boys round to scare them really isn't helpful.

By the time a debt is referred to a debt collection agency, people will have been given many opportunities from the person/organisation owed money to talk and come to an arrangement.

Even when a debt is referred to a debt collection agency, there will be several efforts made by them to make contact and come to a payment arrangement. And the contact is really supportive. I know, I've supported someone through it.

Bailiffs are the absolute last resort and court directed when many, many attempts have been made.

It generally only gets that far when someone refuses to engage completely.

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 29/06/2025 18:52

Every time I send a stool sample, I silently apologise to whoever has to look at it under a microscope.

People have different tolerance levels hence being able to do certain jobs.

I used to wretch at the smell of other people's urine but after life experience, I can handle way more.

keeperofdarktails · 29/06/2025 18:36

Detaining and deporting people who are "illegal" with no rules to adhere to, no warrant, no morals and operating outside the law with financial incentives outside of a normal salary. Oh and treating them inhumanely like throwing them out of planes into the sea, splitting up families and separating mothers from babies and not giving them food or medical aid when captured.

Maybe AI could be used for the child sex abuse work in the future or maybe already is? As I agree- seeing so much depravity must be damaging to the people In this line of work- or maybe even more worrying would be the people
not damaged by it.

Abattoir work? I guess if you can see the process is as humane as possible, and efficient and not cruel. Then it’s not so bad. It’s part and parcel of the circle of life and how we get meat to eat.

They are the most cruel, horrific places on earth. I've worked in several.

Evidence points to the contrary about there being a spectrum. Nothing is ever black and white and I stand by my observation. Also ‘happy hooker’ are your words and not words I used or ever would. Like I said there are nuances which it would be disingenuous to ignore. My statement is in the specific context of what the OP asked not a general statement on prostitution as a whole.

Edited

What nuances?

What benefit does society gain from the existence of some women who are not coerced into it, being willing to allow abusive men to treat them as masturbatory aids?

Why does society need that "job"?

I think it’s a certain type of arsehole that could be a bailiff.

Have a read of Julie Bindels work on prostitution

Before the introduction of The Poll Tax Thatcher stopped the Law Commission from looking at the legislation around debt recovery.

Nearly 50 years on I suggest its something that needs to be done urgently

Most of the women in prostitution have been raped or sexually abused as children. The average age for a woman to enter prostitution is 15. This idea that one end of the spectrum it's the happy hookers and then at the other it's the trafficked sex slaves and then there's a bunch in between, is just not correct. The vast majority of prostituted women have been groomed, coerced or trafficked into it.

Lesina · 29/06/2025 09:26

@SALaw not at all. I believe that people should repay their debts if they can. There is a lot of great work done by step change and CCCS which enable people to pay their debts over time. I think that any form of loan company be it credit card/ car finance or whatever should refer non payers to those organisations rather than employing the services of bailiffs & having worked in an industry that did resort to using bailiffs, I stand by the original point - it takes a special type of arsehole to become a bailiff. Thuggish bully boys.

SALaw · 29/06/2025 09:19

@Lesina but how do you propose unpaid debts should be enforced? You’re happy for people to have debts and not pay?

Boredlass · 29/06/2025 09:06

Lesina · 29/06/2025 00:21

100% agree

I’d say the people not paying are the bigger arseholes

SALaw · 29/06/2025 07:02

@Lesina how should debt be dealt with?

With empathy

A lot of men do it because they have a sexual kink that their wives won’t partake in such as Anal sex.
Not all sex workers are trafficked or forced. Some women work independently of a pimp and have regular customers.

Not all women who engage in prostitution are groomed, coerced or trafficked into it, of course.

Just most of them.

ScreamingBeans · 29/06/2025 00:08

LittlleMy · 28/06/2025 13:01

Yes but thats not so black and white. It is a choice individuals make sometimes because it’s more money faster. There’s also a spectrum from people that actually prefer to do it and then there’s the forced sex work at the other end. So I dont think that’s in ‘jobs humans shouldn’t do’ - that’s just something that’s wrong and criminal in those cases where someone is forced into it.

Oh really I've got no issues with my job...any one who is forced ( into any industry) is an entirely different matter (and also disqualifies it from being a 'job').

That's most of the workers then.

SALaw · 28/06/2025 22:45

@ItDoesntHaveToBeASnowman this is literally the area of law I work in…in Scotland. Sheriff officers can serve attachment orders and, guess what, seize goods in settlement of a debt recovery action. Process might be different but I’m assuming the objection to the role of bailiffs is about taking property to repay debt. If you don’t like that what is the alternative?!

Why can't you buy consent? Surely in many professions consent is sold, a boxer consents to being violently hit for money and that's ok, a member of the armed forces consents to killing or being killed for money and we call them heroes. So why can't a woman choose to sell her consent to her own body in your opinion?

Why are you bending over backwards to say that it's fine for women to be prostitutes? It's not Pretty Woman you know. It's mostly rough and degrading, with men thinking they can do anything to the woman because they've paid for it. It's not going to be respectful men who go looking for a prostitute, not caring if she's trafficked or being pimped out by some other violent waste of skin. Would you be OK doing it? Knowing that you run the risk every single time of being attacked in some way. Having 10 men in an evening, one after another and the physical and emotional toll that will take on you.

scalt · 28/06/2025 19:32

Off topic, but I’ve seen a picture of Baldrick captioned “Baldrick receives the news that he is to become a rent boy, believing it to be a promotion to a junior bailiff”.

I suppose a lot of it's because the engagement isn't equal. Men aren't very often harmed physically,.mentally or emotionally through using prostitutes. The prostitutes often are.

Even those who enter into it willingly often say they have difficulty forming personal relationships with men afterwards and it negatively affects their view of men in general.

No financially and psychologically healthy woman with no history of trauma engages in prostitution.

and no it’s not the same as cleaning toilets

you can’t buy consent

Whatever they do in Scotland I guess. No bailiffs here.

They’re basically the same thing jsut with a different name (sheriff officers)
