In shops and cafes, barking and making people jump, tripping over them in the street... Seems everyone and their Auntie Flo has a dog nowadays.

Hard agree.

I have only ever had negative experiences with dogs. Here's a partial list:

A dog ran under our picnic table, stuck its head suddenly up between my (then) toddler son's legs and tried to steal his sandwich.

A dog tried to bite the (pooed) nappy off my (then) toddler son on a beach.

A dog ran into a beer garden full of kids and went beserk terrifying mine and other kids. Nobody claimed it so I grabbed it by the collar and marched it out on its hind legs (to shame it). MARCH OF SHAME DOG. Someone pointed out I was "choking it". DIDN'T CARE.

I once stood in a cold dog turd on Hemsby beach.

A dog ran out of the boot of a car and chased me while aggressively growling. I turned around and yelled CUNT at it. Owner was distraught.

I was working near Athens and went for a swim in the sea before work. I took my hotel towel with me, left it on the beach. As I was swimming back in this massive Alsatian was approaching my towel, eager to piss. I grabbed a rock off the seabed and flung it to scare it off, but IT PISSED on my hotel towel. My white hotel towel was saturated in flourescent yellow DOG PISS looking like the canine FUCK had overdosed on BEROCCA. Now I had to leave my pissy stinking towel in the hotel room bath for the staff to deal with. PISS DOG.

A dog jumped up and dug its claws into my chest when I was running at York racecourse last year. The owner was looking at his phone. Should have STOVED ITS BOLLOCKS IN.

Yeah. I would go full PINOCHET MODE and yeet ALL DOGS out the back of a C130 Hercules or A400M (I'm not fussy) over the North Sea and call it the #foreverswim.

God, that was boring.

summerisawesome · 25/06/2025 16:41

Posting just for the record with some anecdotal evidence

youngest son now a teen petrified of dogs as a result of being knocked over as a toddler a few times . Being told a dog is friendly is utterly irrelevant

two occasions being tripped up while running by off lead dogs - it really hurts when you hit the deck heavily especially as you age . Resulted in cuts bruises and 6 weeks unable to run

several times dogs jumping up at me - front paws on my upper arm and face in my face . One occasion literally face to face , the bruising was so long lasting the Dr sent me for a mammogram on the 2 week cycle. I’ve seen that dog and owner since and dog is now muzzled and on lead .

I don’t hate dogs , I’m live and let live on the whole . The problem is lack of training and just pure selfishness on the part of the owner on the whole

This is what greeted me when I got up for a wee at 3am the other night. I have no idea where she came from. I don’t even have a dog.

you’re right OP. Dogs are everywhere, even in the bloody bath in the middle of the night!!!!

😂

And? As long as the dog is under control with a responsible owner I don’t see the problem. Obviously the dog must be well behaved and the owner needs not allow the dog to approach people etc, but, at the risk of receiving a shedload of hate, I’m not keen on children, it doesn’t mean I feel
they should be kept hidden from society. Many dogs do useful jobs (sniffer dogs, search and rescue dogs etc), most of the people complaining about dogs would be glad of them in an emergency.

@HangryLikeTheHulk
Would you like us all to list our negative experiences with humans for you?
Mine might be about 10 pages long but I don't mind if you don't...

Runlikesomeoneleftgateopen · 25/06/2025 16:32

Bloody annoying humans who are addicted to complaining everywhere !!!

I like dogs more than I like people.

The problem with dogs is dickhead people as well. Those who just leave them to bark and don't look after them properly.

all those who say that they like dogs more than humans it’s only cos dogs can’t talk back and challenge you. Which is pretty sad when you think about it.

No it’s because dogs don’t destroy their own planet.

SparrowFeet · 25/06/2025 16:09

Just here for the dogs

cloudyblueglass · 25/06/2025 16:07

Humans are a much bigger pest problem.

It’s a shame that all these people dislike themselves so much and are clearly surrounded by awful humans. The people I surround myself with are great company and lovely!

Shout out to all the rational people who:

Think dogs are all right.

Don't think dogs are more important than people.

Think having dogs out and about is fine, in the park, on the streets, in cafe's etc. But there are limits and having them in every shop is ridiculous as most of them seem quite stressed by it all anyway.

Don't think dogs owners should ignore "no dogs" signs just because their little fido has separation anxiety or whatever.

Don't think dogs are horrible, but equally don't want them running up and jumping all over you, especially when you're wearing something nice.

Have no objection to dogs being off lead, but equally think that owners should have them under control at all times because that's the law.

Think that there are a lot of good dog owners, but equally, there's a significant contingent, especially post Covid, of irresponsible fuckers who are probably responsible for the influx of threads on Mumsnet.

Think that nuance is sadly lacking in the modern social media driven era.

Hear hear. The middle ground gets lost with the extreme views on either side.

People and dogs coexisted ok for years. Things have changed since the pandemic and some consideration has gone.

Petuniaspetal · 25/06/2025 15:56

Dogs aren't the issue...humans are, so get the target for your hatred right.

My dog is a mischief making scamp, but I love him more than many of the humans I have come across. He has filled a gaping hole in my life (as did his predecessors). He has made me happier , healthier, poorer and more exasperated, but he has been worth every penny and swear word I have spent on him! This world needs more dogs alot more reliable than men.

I actually like humans but I am sick of litter everywhere. On pavements, in fields, beaches etc. It's terrible in the UK, in other parts of the world it's not such a problem. So for that reason I think humans should be banned.

Do you have any evidence for the UK being worse than other countries for litter? That's not my experience at all. For example, I was in Spain last year and it was disgraceful.

HoskinsChoice · 25/06/2025 15:50

Crispynoodle · 25/06/2025 14:53

I’m 58 and had a Rottweiler jump on me and clamped his jaws around my arm. Luckily had a padded coat on and the owner pulled it off me but it did leave me scared enough of dogs to not want to see them everywhere I go. I live near seaside towns so it’s very unlikely that I won’t see them absolutely everywhere streets, cafes, pubs and I even saw a huge one today in a charity shop. I cope with it because I have to but I can’t help but feel sorry for the dogs who are getting trailed through town centres.

I agree with you on the town centre thing. I've taken my dog into gifts shops when we're pottering on holidays and into a million cafes (although, space and weather permitting, we prefer to sit outside even in winter) but I cannot think why people take them shopping in town centres!

justkeepswimingswiming · 25/06/2025 15:50

I dont mind dogs but please clean your dog’s shit up. Its vile.

Well trained dogs and responsible owners are ok, but there’s not many of them.🙄

I hate dogs around food though. In shops or eating places. Just yuck.🤮
