Birthday gift trip - city chosen sounds dangerous!

It was my birthday yesterday, and my partner booked a surprise trip for the two of us plus our 3 year old to go to Brussels on the Eurostar for two nights next weekend (4th July).

Neither of us have been to Brussels before, or indeed Belgium, so I excitedly started to do some research last night once he told me what the surprise was. As I delved into searches about Brussels, once thing kept coming up - how unsafe it is! I didn't go looking for information on safety, but it just seems to be a constant feature of discussions on the city. It's not a city I know anything about (bar always thinking it sounds a bit boring) but my main takeaways from my extensive research last night is that it is unsafe (shootings, drugs, petty crime) has a level 3 terrorist threat currently ('Serious') and is just generally dirty, unsavoury, and boring.

I now don't want to go after reading all that, and particularly don't want to bring my three year old and put her in any danger. I'm a little surprised my partner booked it in one sense, as it's very hard to find anything positive online about it!

Do I:

  • Tell him what I've read online and how I feel and that I'd prefer not to go? This seems a little rude given he has spent time and money researching things and booking it for my birthday, and I know I'll end up feeling bad.
  • Or, do I go, put up with it, but potentially not enjoy it because I'm worrying about safety and feel anxious and on edge? Based on what I'm reading I'm really not keen. I have found since we've had our daughter I am more concerned about safety generally but I expect that's normal?!

He did mention he looked at Amsterdam but that the hotels were crazy expensive another option for me might be to offer to pay for the hotel in Amsterdam and we change the Eurostar to go there? That way, we are still going and still going to experience the Eurostar and have the weekend away, but without me fretting and not really wanting to be there!

Any thoughts welcome.

Look, if there is somewhere else you want to go and are prepared to pay the additional cost to change it, just do it. Its your trip, if you want to pay a bit more to go somewhere else that is absolutely fine.

But telling yourself that its because Brussels is riddled with more crime than Amsterdam/Paris/Rome is seems a bit silly. All major cities will have their share of crime.

When I opened the thread I thought it was going to say Tehran.
YABVVVU. Like VVVVVVV unreasonable.

Lmnop22 · 25/06/2025 10:26

Every big city in Europe is “dangerous” including London, Manchester, Birmingham because there’s crime etc.

Brussels is fine!

Trickedbyadoughnut · 25/06/2025 10:25

I was very much not expecting this thread to be about Brussels when I opened it 😂

Honestly, it's safer than London and I love visiting! Enjoy your trip.

AngryBird6122 · 25/06/2025 10:25

I have been a few times. The only place I felt that was dodgy was near the station. Once in the centre, it's fine.

lostinthesunshine · 25/06/2025 10:22

I nearly googled to see if there is another Brussels somewhere!

Brussels is perfectly safe and lovely. Great waffles! Nice walks. Lovely restaurants. Great for wondering around over a long weekend.

Topseyt123 · 25/06/2025 10:22

Of course Brussels is safe. As safe as many other major European capitals ! Why wouldn't it be?

Are you looking up crime statistics? You'll find plenty on those for every city in the world, including London and other UK ones. Every town and city in the world has its problems with the issues you mention so if you keep on like this you might just as well never go anywhere at all.

Stop disappearing down these rabbit holes! You are hardly going to Baghdad, Teheran or Beirut.

Enjoy your trip. I'd love to go to Brussels some day.

paradisecircus · 25/06/2025 10:21

You have to be vigilant in any city. Brussels is no different, and no worse than anywhere else.
I think the trip sounds lovely, including the ride on Eurostar. Could you adjust your settings to pleased/grateful and try to enjoy it?

Lafufufu · 25/06/2025 10:07

Brussels is fine/ safe.

I would take a day trip to Ghent though (way nicer) its about 40min on train from main station (where eurostar arrives) hust as it is WAAAAY nicer

I lived in Brussels for years and it's not dangerous. There are areas that are less pleasant, same as in any big city, but around Grand Place, Sablon, Chatelain for example it's actually really nice. The area around the institutions is boring and bland, apart from a nice enough park and some pretty houses.

MoistVonL · 25/06/2025 10:15

What on earth are you on about? Brussels is a lovely city.

I’ve been quite often and it’s beautiful. My kids had a great time. The Magritte museum is good, the Grand’ Place is gorgeous, there’s great architecture and nice parks, you can do a tour of all the chocolate shops you fancy, buying one in each, it’s ace.

SpanielsGalore · 25/06/2025 10:15

My nephew was mugged in Amsterdam. I bet if you did an internet search, it wouldn't come up as any safer than Brussels.

caringcarer · 25/06/2025 10:14

Brussels is perfectly safe just as in all large cities be on watch for pick pockets. Make it harder for them by keeping wallets inside zipped up bag not in back pocket of a pair of jeans. Bruges is lovely and well worth a visit if you can.

Plantladylover · 25/06/2025 10:14

I'd feel safer in Brussels than in London

CuriousKangaroo · 25/06/2025 10:13

Brussels is not dangerous. It’s just boring. (I have been a lot as I have friends who live there.)

GluttonousHag · 25/06/2025 10:12

Brussels is as safe as any other big European city. The ‘high’ terror threat level is for all of Belgium, and all of France, and Germany, Italy and Denmark are only one level below, and the UK is only a level below that at ‘substantial’.

Losingitandfindingmyself · 25/06/2025 10:11

Brussles is fine, I thought you were going to say Barcelona with all the thieves

deeahgwitch · 25/06/2025 10:11

Do visit Bruge for a day when staying in Brussels. So gorgeous. I’d go back in a heartbeat.
It’s a trip on a train from Brussels and a walk into the town.
I preferred it to Ghent, apologies @Lafufufu

Twisterpiggy · 25/06/2025 10:10

Brussels is perfectly safe.

PopThatBench · 25/06/2025 10:10

I haven’t been myself but my friend and his girlfriend recently took the Eurostar to Brussels and absolutely loved it, the photos they uploaded looked lovely!

Parker231 · 25/06/2025 10:09

I’m from Brussels - it’s a safe city. Safer than London and many other capital cities.

Glowinglights · 25/06/2025 10:09

It really isn’t a dangerous city at all. Just a big capital city, where you can wander around like you’d do in Amsterdam, Paris or Prague. Don’t worry - read a few positive stories about Brussels, and enjoy your trip

THEP0PE · 25/06/2025 10:09

Youre going to kiss out on life if you carry on like this.

5foot5 · 25/06/2025 10:08

I have been to Brussels and thought it a very attractive city. No idea why you would think it any more "unsafe" than any other major city.

But if you do decide to change to Amsterdam it would be the same Eurostar but further, the service to Amsterdam stops at Brussels. Though you might find more to do with a 3 year old in Brussels than Amsterdam

SumUp · 25/06/2025 10:08

Brussels is nice as a tourist! No city is risk free. The main square is pretty, there’s a botanic garden, and a huge park by the atomium. It is also a good base to explore other parts of Belgium from if you’re there for more than a weekend.
