Next door sex noises with kids in house

Wondering what (if anything) to do about next door neighbour family.

They’ve been next door for about a year. Always slightly ‘chaotic’ but nothing too bad eg they are very messy and noisy, they have pets running everywhere including a monkey in a cage, the mum doesn’t seem to have a job and screams at the kids a lot (no dad present).

I WFH and have noticed that often the kids aren’t at school during the day. They do go sometimes but not all the time. Kids seem to be early teens.

Over the last couple of weeks I have been disturbed multiple times in the day by very loud sex noises coming from next door. The mum is clearly enjoying herself with someone who I can also hear. It’s not massively enjoyable to hear this but I wouldn’t care except that there have been times that the kids are there too. I’ve seen them in the garden whilst mum is inside upstairs clearly having sex. I think this is wildly inappropriate to the point of wondering if I should report the whole situation to someone. Would you?

Part of me is hesitant because ‘Having sex whilst kids are in the house’ is fine, but when you add ‘daytime’ ‘plus ‘they should be at school’ plus ‘really quite loud’ I get bothered.

Social services aren't going to be interested that a mum has a sex life, and the kids' schools will already be perfectly aware that their attendance is patchy. I don't see anything here that needs reporting... unless there is more you are not saying.

I disagree. It's not the fact that the mum has a sex life ..most parents have a sex life...but theres a huge difference between having a sex life and having loud sex in the daytime with your kids in earshot. I would definitely report and I'm a very much mind your own business type of person.

SunnySideDeepDown · 24/06/2025 08:03

Having sex in front of children - or loudly in the presence of children/where they are being made aware of it - is abusive. 100% report. She sounds negligent at best.

You can't possibly know this and it is far better to report concerns than not. Hopefully you are right and the kids aren't at risk but better to be safe than sorry.

Maybe I just live in a scuzzy area but social services are busy and there's no way those would meet the threshold (having seen/known kids who really do need intervention but SS are nowhere, despite reports). It does jam up social services up having to deal with stuff like this. I would report to SS if I had genuine concerns for a child's wellbeing, but a couple of teens overhearing their mum having sex? Not ideal, really quite grim, but I personally wouldn't take it further than that. She probably doesn't realise the noise is carrying and I'd be thinking whether to mention something to her.

I do appreciate there have been some high profile child abuse cases and now everyone has switched to 'report absolutely everything, just in case'. In these circumstances, I'd be inclined to monitor a while and see if I had any other concerns because they sound a bit chaotic but that's not a crime in itself.

Where the hell would someone even buy a monkey from?!

Until 2023 it was entirely legal, and staggeringly common, for primates to be sold as pets

Sorry but... A MONKEY IN A CAGE?

😂😂😂 Same here

HoppingPavlova · 24/06/2025 07:51

Yes, I’d make a report about the children and let social determine whether to investigate or not.

Staggered you seem to think the monkey was a sideline. Surely you can’t just keep monkeys in the UK without a permit - asking as you certainly can’t where I am? I’d think any permit would be contingent on suitable housing and I can’t imagine it’s a small cage that can be moved around. I’d urge you to report this for the sake of that poor monkey/animal abuse.

endingintiers · 24/06/2025 07:49

Rules are changing about monkey in a cage, for England at least, the large indoor cage won’t be adequate:

also agree frequent loud sex noises with children in ear shot is potentially abusive

But the new law won't kick in until 2026, amid worry for thousands of kept monkeys

DinoLil · 24/06/2025 07:49

That reminds me of when I was a child. My parents would 'put' me and sis in the garden to play whilst they had a 'little lie down' .

Report monkey to rspca
Woman to SS.
Doesn't sound like either the kids or pets are cared for .

YodasHairyButt · 24/06/2025 07:45

I’d hate her with a passion just for having a monkey as a pet, the sex noises would just be icing on the cake. It must be horrible to live next door to, you have my sympathy.

ARichtGoodDram · 24/06/2025 07:43

ResidentPorker · 24/06/2025 07:40

I’d be reporting them to the police for illegally keeping a wild animal. The sex noises wouldn’t be as much of a priority.

It's legal in the UK to own small primates as pets.

Until 2023 it was even technically legal to keep them in shitty small bird cages

ARichtGoodDram · 24/06/2025 07:42

Dayushorribilis · 24/06/2025 07:39

The monkey in the cage! Ok - to give more details. It is a huge cage. Maybe ten feet tall by ten feet wide. And it’s a tiny monkey. But it is still a monkey in a cage. I was slack jawed when I saw it.
Sometimes the monkey isn’t in the cage so I presume is in the house, roaming free. It is a bizarre set up, yes.

That's actually a massive cage by primate pet trade standards.

Most idiots keep (legally until very very recently) small primates in tiny bird cages 😡

ARichtGoodDram · 24/06/2025 07:40

Please do report the monkey to the RSPCA.

Since 2023 the new animal welfare bill has increased the expectations of people who keep primates as pets and the days of it being acceptable to keep a primate in a bird cage (usually with poor nutrition) are, thankfully, at an end.

Sounds like the RSPCA might be more appropriate.

WaltzingWaters · 24/06/2025 07:36

Oh gosh, it all sounds very chaotic. Yes I would definitely report. But it’s the monkey in the cage that stood out to me. What the? How big is this cage and any idea if it’s being cared for appropriately? I’d guess not considering what else you’ve said about the kids. Call the RSPCA too!

Rootatoot · 24/06/2025 07:35

I lived near a couple of people who made loud sex noises. One was a student house so just young and silly. The other was a prosititue.

Her making loud noises during the day with kids at home isn't normal. Id guess she might be some sort of sex worker.

You should report though reckon they'll care more about the kids being off school than they will the sex stuff.

This isn’t technically true.

It’s one thing to have a sex life and your children accidentally catching you, it’s another to have loud, obvious sex in the vicinity of your children and could actually be considered as a form of child abuse.

Combined with the other concerns, it definitely is worth reporting. It is not our job to assess the situation, the OP should report her concerns and social services will do that. If there is nothing to be concerned about, the file will be closed.

Are you serious? Of course this is an issue to report to SS! 🤯

LurkyMcLurkinson · 24/06/2025 07:31

Contact the rspca and children’s services (google mash and your county and that will give you the number to call).

Heronwatcher · 24/06/2025 07:31

I would 100% report to social services. Up to them whether they do anything but at least they’d be involved.
