To think Palestine Action isn't a terrorist group?

I don't agree with what they've done (breaking into military bases to vandalise planes), but I don't understand why they're being proscribed. Extinction Rebellion and Just Stop Oil have caused far more damage to property and general annoyance.

Arrest and prosecute the people who commit criminal acts, absolutely, but this is setting the bar for branding protestors "terrorists" far too low.

I agree they are not terrorists. Our government
needs to jump off the fence and take a stronger stand against Israel.

I will ask the same to you, do you live in the UK? If so, how do you think we would fare with incapicated aircraft?

GRex · 23/06/2025 08:38

You'd be quick enough to call it damage if people threw paint all over your house and car. They actually got paint in the engines, which is incredibly expensive. Even if the damage had cost £5 though, this is a deliberate attack on UK military and therefore is terrorism. Behaviour towards Jewish people described on another thread is antisemitism, and designed to create fear, and being done by the same violent group. I think police have been far too lenient to date; the group need to be banned and those committing the worst offences must be jailed, or deported where they are not citizens.

Yes, I would agree with this. It has to be stopped otherwise it will escalate.

Mulberryblackbird · 23/06/2025 08:38

To be fair, these are different situations, as the planes damaged were due to fly to bomb civilians in East Timor and Yemen.

As far as I'm aware, our military is not involved in harming Palestinians, so the damage to these planes hasn't any justification arguable on those grounds! (And if the group supports Hamas, it is supporting terrorists.)

caat.org.uk/news/21-years-on-solidarity-with-the-disarmers/

You're right. No justification on those grounds. Thanks.

Agree and it's no surprise that Scotland's former first minister is against a ban. People will wake up - when it's too late.

Maybe not even then. At least it will be illegal for the group to be supported online.

I wouldn't say throwing a bit of paint at a plane is serious damage. It needs a clean and a respray, not scrapping. Should they be prosecuted? Yes. Would I have cared if they'd been shot by the personnel responsible for securing the base? Only so far as it would affect those personnel.

Tony Benn's 5 essential questions of democracy are very pertinent to this debate:

• What power have you got?
• Where did you get it from?
• In whose interests do you use it?
• To whom are you accountable?
• How do we get rid of you?

The Labour Party receives money from Israel and weapon manufacturer lobbyists (a lobbyist pressures or pays for politicians to vote in their personal, business or political interests):

https://www.opendemocracy.net/en/dark-money-investigations/keir-starmer-labour-party-quadrature-donation-arms-companies-israel-war-gaza/

https://www.declassifieduk.org/israel-lobby-funded-half-of-keir-starmers-cabinet/

The funding of politicians in this way means that any modern UK government at any time is not working in the interest of the people, but in the interest of rich donors made powerful by their access to political decision-making.

Palestine Action activists were trying to disarm the UK government's assistance of an illegal occupation of Palestine, a genocide and forced starvation.

Starmer and Lammy should be in the Hague and the Labour Party should be proscribed for arming the terrorist state of Isreal that is bombing the hell out of Palestine, Iran, Yemen and Lebanon and not allowing any inspection of its nuclear weaponry.

Mordechai Vanunu was abducted and imprisoned by Israel for leaking details on its secret nuclear programme.

Work out who the real terrorists are...it's not a bunch of lefties with cans of paint. Read this by the brilliant Sally Rooney...

It does mean that more examination of the engines will be needed, Many hours of work and testing.
Perhaps this will be where we tougher with these useless people who are so intent on acting against us.
We have no real influence on what happens in The Middle East. We have No Power. None of our aircraft will be used by Israel or against Iran. We might be involved in any action to keep the shipping lanes open. But little else.
Just get real if we adopt all the demands of these barmy people It would not give any one in the West Bank or Gaza an extra plat of land or a loaf of bread. Go and convince the Jewish leaders both political and religious. Only they can change anything.

why do you say they need to convince the Jewish leaders?

noblegiraffe · 23/06/2025 08:27

You are advocating attacking our own military? Are you sure you want to encourage that?

This is exactly why the group’s actions need to be taken extremely seriously. Shutting them down as a terrorist organisation will hopefully deter other idiots who think aiding our enemies is a good thing.

Yes, they're being useful idiots.

In the past, when campaigners damaged planes to stop them bombing innocent people, their argument stood up in court.

Yes, we now have a broad definition of terrorism – one which includes acts that aren't terrorism, but traditional forms of protest.

Which court cases were these, where damage to military planes wasn't regarded as terrorism or similar?

Do people still do this freedom fighter thing for terrorists today?

Mn posts make me glad we have UK laws on supporting such groups

I think you know that people do - that's a strange comment from you

(And you might like to have seen my other posts on this thread before you jump to any conclusions about my thoughts on this action)

Meetmeundertheclock · 23/06/2025 08:28

@Babezz you say: "You should when said military force is actively aiding genocide and illegal wars"

What military force, where are aircraft flying?
What illegal War? Which Country?

Whitehorses67 · 23/06/2025 08:27

I am very pleased to hear they will be a banned group. One of the few things good this government has done so far.

TheFrendo · 23/06/2025 08:25

AIUI, they are suportive of Hamas which is a proscribed terrorist organisation. I don't think enough is made of the fact that it is illegal to aid or express support for a proscribed terrorist organisations.

musicforthesoul · 23/06/2025 08:23

They're lucky they weren't shot breaking into a military base. Utter failure of security they weren't stopped at the scene.

Damage to military equipment for the purpose of advancing an ideological cause meets the definition of terrorism under UK law. Play stupid games...

MifsBr0wn · 23/06/2025 08:16

I’d have thought a military base would be protected by armed guards so these individuals are lucky they didn’t get shot. But I suspect the rationale behind this decision is to find the culprits and give them a stiff jail sentence to deter others. That seems to be the way this government works unless your are habitual criminal then you get released early.

Dangermoo · 23/06/2025 08:13

thepariscrimefiles · 23/06/2025 07:55

They aren't terrorists so proscribing the organisation is wrong. They vandalised planes but didn't commit or threaten violence. This government is becoming very authoritarian.

No-one is saying that they shouldn't be prosecuted but this is a step too far.

Authoritarian - for protecting its military bases - you know the places in which our aircraft are kept in case of a major threat to our security?
