To think the US was right to bomb Iran? What am I missing?

I am no fan of Trump. I’m very much left wing.

But am I missing something here? Why has everyone become such huge supporters of Iran? The world is a safer place as a result of removing their capability to develop nuclear weapons? Why is everyone carrying on like Iran is a victim and they were truly just trying to implement peaceful nuclear capabilities? Has everyone lost the plot?

@BigBillyButterBollocks thinks it’s fine. She doesn’t care if Iran develops nuclear weapons. It’s clearly the belief of quite a few posters.

Nonsense.

People would rather leave this in the hands of the atomic watchdog than bomb countries. It's the sensible option. Even Donald Trump thought so and he's a fuckwit.

What do the outcomes look like from the Palestinian side? 10,000s of actual deaths. Mass displacement. Starvation. Destruction. You'd think with the IDF having all that amazing super high tech equipment they'd manage to avoid killing so many women and children.

That would only be true if they were trying to actually avoid killing the women and children.....

BuffysBigSister · 22/06/2025 18:05

TheMel · 22/06/2025 18:02

How about instead of looking at outcomes, you look at actions. How many rockets have been indiscriminately fired from Gaza in the past 20 years?

The way I see it, each rocket is potentially at least one dead Israeli civilian. The fact that this didn't happen is purely by the grace of God. But from the Gazan's POV they've tried to kill hundreds of thousands of innocent Israelis.

How many Israeli deaths and how many Palestinian? How many Palestinians have the Israeli government killed? A people under occupation have the right under international law to defend themselves.

Unfortunately this is a naive approach.

Iran hates the west.

If you leave them to destroy Israel and turn away and shrug, do you think you won’t be next?

I guess we are left with no choice but invade and bomb another country, steal their oil, terrify, rape, displace and kill their civilians, leave the country in total chaos and lecture them about peace. They will grow to like us eventually!

UK sanctions Israeli government ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich in response to their repeated incitements of violence against Palestinian communities, alongside Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Norway.

Ok, hopefully you are not serious. But just incase you actually think Israel is occupying Gaza, here are some facts.
Israel withdrew from Gaza in September 2005 - nearly 20 years ago.
They withdrew from one sector of the west Bank and shared control of another area in 1995, 30 years ago. Jews are not even allowed inside the third area of the West Bank and are advised to stay out of the shared area for their own safety.

Seriously, you really should understand the actual facts of something before forming an opinion. Gaza has been in control of its own affairs for 20 years and just look what its done with that autonomy.

For someone so insistent on facts you will know that under International law Gaza is classed as an Occupied Territory.

In practice this means Israel controls the imports and exports, water, food, electricity, Internet, movement of people , building and some taxation.
There are also over 100 permits Palestinians must apply to from Israel just to live their lives.

Gaza has not been in control of their own affairs.
A UN report in 2022 stated Israel’s system of policies and practices has systematically stripped the Palestinian economy of vital elements for its healthy operation, whose productive base continues to shrink, thereby exacerbating dire living conditions,”

Meddling, Meddling. Yes hun let's let a load of nutters in Iran who have declared death to the Israel, The US, the West many a time carry on wirh their nuclear development. Great plan. Sadly a bit of 'meddling' is necessary.

PandoraSocks · 22/06/2025 15:07

No, I don't think they are years away at all. I think it's become clear they weren't

What evidence do you have of that?

Because there is no other reason for them to be stockpiling that much enriched uranium, and it isn't controversial they were doing so.

But also - despite the rhetoric on here, Trump has not been a warmonger. He's consistently tried to steer away from armed conflicts and has tried to negotiate with Iran until very recently. He hasn't been particularly inclined to do BN's bidding just because either. These ideas are being repeated again and again as what's going on, on this thread, but they are "truthy", rather than factual.

Something seems to have happened suddenly, big enough for him to rush away from the G7, and then we have this.

It's not direct but the fact is they won't, and can't, release any new direct information like that to the public. So not seeing it doesn't really tell us anything. If Iran is very close the public won't get a chance to see the evidence even if it exists.

The US (and international law) consider Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerudalem as occupied territories. It's not up for debate

"The Occupied Territories, which include the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip, are subject to the jurisdiction of Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA), with the division of responsibilities overlapping in much of the territory"

You should include Israel as a hostile despotic regime. One of the biggest threats to world peace right now.

What an idiotic statement. Israel has never started a war of aggression, and in recent years has been focused on peace and normalisation with the broader Arab world.

Setting aside your opinion on the Gaza war, as it's irrelevant to the ME at large, Israel poses no threat to any of the ME countries. And never has. The only exception is Iran, which has arguably declared war on Israel by funding its terrorist proxies.

Iran has actively engaged in warfare against Israel via Hamas, Hezbollah, Houthis and other Islamic terrorist groups. Now Israel has struck back - and even that, only at military and potential WMD targets.

An Israel that is left to its own devices poses zero threat to anyone. Even Gaza had been ignored for 18 years, except when Hamas made it impossible to ignore.

Agree

greencartbluecart · 22/06/2025 17:51

Left alone - no

i think we should be working yogether to understand differences and work out a way by which Iran won’t feel forced to develop these weapons by the fear they have that others will attack them

fear that is clearly justified - the attacks play into the hands of extremistS

yes it’s hard to work with people you despise and fear , people who are culturally so very different to you - if we are so right and out way of living so
much better however it should be easy to demonstrate this

peace talks take decades but are better than any alternatives - although those building weapons may disagree

I’d be genuinely interested in reports that said Iran was about to produce a nuclear weapon. I know it’s hard to read tone on here but if there are properly authoritative reports/intelligence, I would be really interested to read them. I think we should all be open to learning facts, not just cherry-picking information that suits our narrative.

Everything I’ve read though, including from the US, said Iran were carrying out concerning activities but weren’t able to produce a nuclear bomb any time soon.

The question remains - why has Trump got involved NOW? If for a moment we take the intelligence about an imminent threat at face value, why did he wait so long? Why wait until they’re allegedly on the verge of producing a bomb? It just doesn’t make sense logically.

There has to be democracy. One of the world’s most powerful countries can’t just take it upon itself to bomb another country.

What if it were China? What if China decided that a country it viewed as hostile shouldn’t have nuclear capacity - would it be ok for them to bomb them too? That country might not be hostile to us, but if it’s hostile to China and their allies, then it’s ok for China to bomb them - because after all, the US has just done that….

If a country presents a genuine and imminent threat, there are emergency procedures. Trump has ignored everything that’s in place.

Hopefully there won’t be retaliatory attacks because Iran is weak and hopefully the US did wipe out their nuclear plants - that would as least be some consolation. But this is a very powerful country that’s gone rogue which isn’t something that any of us should be applauding.

And you see no difference between China and the US?

You are right. Information can be cherry picked. We can pretend that the intelligence shows whatever we want it to - so there is no point in insisting that it showed that Iran wouldn't have nuclear weapons for years.

It is happening now because of the heightened tension between Israel and Iran. Israel is the US’ ally.
