The worst thing about those attached bottle lids…

Fuckyachickenstrips · 22/06/2025 13:27

It’s not that they’re usually a pain in the hole to screw back on, it’s not that they squash your nose when you’re trying to drink…

It’s that when it’s something like a smoothie, you have to lick them out like a fucking pervert. I’m always tonguing these lids in public like a dirty bastard, but if I don’t then I get smoothie spilled on me from where it’s collected in the lid.

Sick of tongue flicking lids in public like a total deviant.

Well go and give them a good tonguing then to show them how much you like them

😆

@FlightCommanderPRJohnson This happened to me yesterday ! I looked as though I had peed myself and DH wouldn't walk alongside me. His loss 😂😂

Thaawtsom · 22/06/2025 16:41

I don't mind them on water.

It's definitely something about smoothies make the bastard lids significantly bastardier.

SabreIsMyFave · 22/06/2025 16:40

By the way @Fuckyachickenstrips I hate these bastard attached bottle lids too! And despite the very few on here with zero sense of humour saying all the lids will end up in landfill because we CBA with them, inexplicably I have always managed to pop the lid back onto the bottle (when I am done with the bottle,) before I stick it in the recycling. I have NEVER chucked the lids in separately. Confused

.

Simple solution, ditch the smoothies, or make them yourself

I was just thinking I think I've only probably used one of these lids since they came out. I hate smoothies though they all taste if slightly off banana.

How do you know that the whole of the eu population copes OK?

They dont, theres people moaning on the Italian and Spanish versions of mamasnet right now.

The lids DONT always click into position and stay there for those that keep confidently repeating this, they are scratchy and sharp, also difficult to manipulate for those of us with disabilities, I dont have the strengh to manage them.

However they pale into insignificance in the inconvenience and danger category compared to cardboard lids that some shops are now using for hot drinks Mcdonalds is one of them and a garden centre near us used a cardboard lid for a hot drink the other day. They dont seal properly and are lethal for scalding, dribbling out as you lift the cup to drink. Then you cannot get the lid off for love nor money and risk scalding as you do so, only being able to get it off by tearing it which means you then dont have a lid. Awful awful things.

Branster · 22/06/2025 16:34

unsync · 22/06/2025 13:43

You only have to break one side. The whole of the EU population seems to cope alright with these bottle tops, what's so special about the Britsh that they find these tops challenging?

The 'whole of the EU' dislike this detail as much as anyone else. And it's not only in Britain that plastic bottles are sold like this.

I agree OP the system is flawed.

Incidentally, I noticed (not just in Britain), some water bottles are made of thinner, more flexible plastic. This makes the problem even worse. Pot luck if you can unseal the lid without getting splashed or if you can put the lid on property to avoid spills.

UpsideDownChairs · 22/06/2025 16:24

And I always fucking recycled the lids. Although I'm in Ireland, so I also have to collect all the bottles, not crush them or lose labels so I can post them one by one into a machine surrounded by wasps to get my 15p a bottle/can back. I RECYCLED ALREADY but now it's much more hassle, and takes up more space.

I can't say that I saw an epidemic of bottle-less lids before they started attaching them TBH either

UpsideDownChairs · 22/06/2025 16:22

Little splatters of milk all around the fridge, half the time the lid isn't on, and I quickly got sick of getting little drips of whatever it was on me/the worktop/the floor so I snap them off - it's easier to snap them off without drips than it is to drink/pour from a bottle with it attached.

Desperatelyseekingreason · 22/06/2025 16:19

So difficult to undo and do up with arthritic fingers. Cutting them off leaves sharp bits. I hate the things.

muddyford · 22/06/2025 16:14

Whatwaswrongwiththatusername · 22/06/2025 16:09

Now I want to see your tiny scissors! An inch square including the finger holes?? Teeny tiny little scissors! These have now captured my brain!

They fold so the finger holes cover the blades. They are about two inches long, unfolded.

HonoriaBulstrode · 22/06/2025 16:14

these narrower profile lids are damn near impossible for anybody with arthritis in their hands to open.

Not just people with arthritis. I had to use a damp face flannel the other day to get enough grip to twist the lid off. I was at home then and could do that. It's a nightmare when you're out and haven't got anything helpful to hand.

muddyford · 22/06/2025 16:05

This thread is making me giggle. But I have this wonderful invention called "scissors". I have a tiny folding pair, about an inch square, ideal for a tether-snipping session away from base. But I still lick out the smoothie from the top...

Whatwaswrongwiththatusername · 22/06/2025 16:07

Bloody things! You have to sort of pull them up a bit to get it back over the lip for it to go back on and be done up properly. Too easy to spill. I would pull it off like other pps are saying but I just know that if I were to do that then the whole contents will just end up over me instead of inside me!
I suppose I can sort of see why they’re like that now - as at least my (and presumably every other?) local council tells you to recycle with the lid on. I was abroad somewhere last year and that was the first time I saw them, then we get back to the uk and suddenly they were on everything. I think tetrapak with attached lids are more annoying to me than the bottle though, because if you try and drink out of those (not that I’d ever do that myself, of course, because that would be hugely grotty 🫣) then that really is asking for messy trouble.

muddyford · 22/06/2025 16:05

Fuckyachickenstrips · 22/06/2025 15:35

With what? I’m not performing a banjo-stringectomy on my bottles with my teeth. I already look like a total animal licking the lids out!

So depressing to read that people are yanking these off to avoid a mild inconvenience when they've been changed so they're more likely to get recycled.

So depressing to think that not one person responsible for making the change considered that these narrower profile lids are damn near impossible for anybody with arthritis in their hands to open.

Tulipvase · 22/06/2025 15:49

Our plumber told us that apparently our recycling depot doesn’t recycle plastic bottles anymore as the lids/tethers aren’t recyclable.

I’m not convinced I believe him but it sounds like the sort of thing that could actually be true.

Hollyhobbi · 22/06/2025 15:44

Be thankful you’re not in Ireland! As well as those tops we have to pay a deposit for any drink in a plastic bottle, hold on to the bottle and then bring it back to a shop to get the deposit refunded! These are bottles we used to just put in our green recycling bin. Now you have people emptying the contents of public bins all over town to get the bottles to get the deposit back.. So instead of reducing rubbish they are now creating more unsightly messes all over the footpaths. But I have a condition that causes bone pain especially in in fingers and toes and I find it painful to open anything with those new tops now.

I'll know our government are taking litter and the environment seriously when they start coming down hard on cigarette litter.

For every dropped bottle or lid I'll pick up 100 pieces of cigarette litter. Make a campaign about them and we might get somewhere. And effing cable ties dropped by events teams and scaffolders.

The latest kind of littering that really fucks me off- those little stickers from disposable vapes. Stuck all over bins. What the fuck are they sticking them all over the bins for instead of putting them in the bin? People are disgusting.
