To have insisted on DH doing his ‘business’ at work when we were down to one bathroom

I told my friends this last night who found it amusing so would be interested to hear if they are the only ones!

We were down to just our upstairs bathroom this week as the downstairs bathroom was being re-done (finally finished yesterday afternoon).

Given the heat, DH was told that he should do his usual morning business when he arrives at his work rather than use the upstairs bathroom, as I didn’t fancy the smell festering all morning in this heat.

DH was fine with this - AIBU to have made such a request?!

Toilets are for shitting in. Shit smells. Why do people have a problem with this?

I’m struggling to believe that one bathroom houses are as common as is being made out. What an absurd proposition.

Even the ghastly shoe box new builds which have sprung up everywhere have at least two.

If I was to consider acquiring an older property with one bathroom, I’d certainly conduct due diligence on the ease at which a further one could be installed.

It’s 2025, goodness me.

Are you actually being serious? A lot of houses only have one bathroom. Mine and most of the people I know included. What you deem as “absurd” is actually completely normal to most people. Could you be any more patronising?

Matrons · 21/06/2025 12:49

OP you sound like hard work.

Our downstairs bathroom is off the utility room and easily separated from the rest of the house, so the smell doesn’t escape as it would upstairs. Whilst that was out of use, he was happy to relieve himself elsewhere each morning.

Oh….. off the utility room… not much better than the old outdoor privy then. Come to think of it - there’s an idea 💡

I mean, now you just sound like a fake snob, which is a bit weird. What’s your plan here?

What is with all the poo-phobic posters on here?

ruethewhirl · 21/06/2025 11:59

Why would a builder's shit smell any worse than anyone else's?

I imagine that poster was thinking its all the "beer and chips" they consume or some such nonsense

tuesday2am · 21/06/2025 12:45

If you’re being serious then get your head out the clouds, ma’am.

One bathroom houses are extremely common - even in the present day.

It’s absurd to expect your DH to literally not take a shit in HIS OWN HOUSE.

I guarantee you, your shit still stinks. Shocking the difference in standard you think you’re entitled to. Ew.

How to say you are out of touch with reality without saying you are out of touch with reality.

Plenty of homes 'only' have one bathroom and toilet. Your dh can't help the smell he produces and you are treating him like he has the plague. Someone else hit the nail on the head with this earlier. If you were male and your dh female, people would be telling him to leave for being in a controlling relationship. I cannot believe you make him leave the house- who on earth do you think you are?

Natsku · 21/06/2025 12:43

Just have him light a match afterwards, gets rid of the smell very quickly.

HelpMeGetThrough · 21/06/2025 12:41

If I was married to you OP, I’d take a shite in the kettle and leave for work.

Hallywally · 21/06/2025 12:38

Loads of houses only have bathroom, particularly older terraces etc. I’m also amused that people can delay their poos for prolonged periods 🤣

Wind up or you completely lack any form of self awareness

Pelvicpaininthebum · 21/06/2025 12:35

We only have one toilet. I make DH and the kids shit at the end of the garden.

Hercisback1 · 21/06/2025 12:35

The horror of ONLY one bathroom.

You had me for a while OP. Tapping out now into 2025.

Italiangreyhound · 21/06/2025 12:34

Yes *tumblingdowntherabbithole of course millions still do. *

JLou08 · 21/06/2025 12:34

Please say you're joking. Inflicting the smell on his work colleagues rather than in his own home.
Do you realise there are many peasants that have to live with just 1 bathroom all the time.

WarmDeer · 21/06/2025 08:37

Because I don’t produce such nuclear level stenches, to be frank!

Honestly I'd look at his diet. Sounds like too much UPF and not enough protein/fibre.

Cherrytree86 · 21/06/2025 12:23

Whether you eat MacDonald’s or a plate of broccoli - shit will still stink.

Yes, in fact Broccoli farts are probably one of the worst, smells pretty bad before it goes in!

Italiangreyhound · 21/06/2025 12:26

There is no way I could,.l 'do my business' to order!

I'd buy an air freshener or open a window.

We all lived with one bathroom a few decades ago!

And millions of us still do!

RichHolidayPoorHoliday · 21/06/2025 12:25

of course you would 🙄

Thoughts and prayers OP.

You posted a couple of weeks ago about how your DH wasn't allowed to do 'his business' in the ensuite didn't you?

You. Need. Help. It's a toilet. It's sole purpose is for the hygienic disposal of bodily waste. We are incredibly fortunate in this country to have near universal access to toilets and clean water. A significant proportion of the world doesn't

I prescribe you a week in rural Greece where you're not allowed to flush toilet paper as it will block the drains so you have to put shitty toilet paper in a bin, followed by another week in a developing country where the toilet is a latrine shared with dozens of other people. Then perhaps you will realise how ridiculous you're being.

Totally agree!
I think not flushing toilet paper is quite common in many countries in Europe that I’ve visited, if you’re lucky there’s a bidet to use!
its very entitled and actually bizarre to not allow a toilet to be used.
The only exception would be if someone is going to have a bath straight after in which case you’d try and avoid leaving it smelly!
