Hell is a terraced house with a hot tub, bar and outdoor tv.

Or more accurately, hell is what I'm going through living next door to this abominable set up.

Family from hell moved in not that long ago. Drunken pot smoking father who attended a house party in the mid 90's and apparently never left, a wife who to be fair seems like she's lost the will to live or smile, and an assortment of teenagers who like to invite all their mates round and shout about dildos and cumming in people's eyes.

The garden has slowly morphed into something resembling a butlins, which is fairly impressive as we all only have narrow postage stamp gardens. It started with a hot tub, progressed to an outdoor bar, and has culminated this weekend in some sort of wooden shack thing made of fences with a tin roof, housing an outdoor television.

The second the sun comes out it is thumping tunes ALL day, which to be fair sometimes gets turned down a little at 11 pm. Unfortunately tonight it has now been replaced by some shitty action movie being loudly played in the garden, as the family members converse in their usual dulcet yells. Must have affected their hearing with all that drum and bass.

Yes, we have tried talking to them. The father seemed to indicate through grunts that he had understood my attempt at communication with a primitive life form, however we were then treated to angle grinding in the street regularly for a few nights, as he loudly complained about the 'stuck up bitch next door' and proclaimed that I'd be 'having that'.

No, I currently can't move. I'm working on it but realistically not going to be any time soon. I'd imagine the house would be a hard sell at the moment too, most prospective owners would run a mile.

I guess I just wanted to rant, I'm so tired. I've actually found myself on the brink of tears a few times tonight, mainly from frustration. They went away last week and it was wonderful. The entire estate was practically silent, just the usual buzz of every day life going on made me really appreciate just what loud obnoxious bastards they are.

We had noisy neighbours in one house we lived in. Nothing like as bad as your lot though! It was definitely a factor in our wanting to move when we had a chance.

I felt bad for the new people but, like you, the noisy neighbours were renting and moved on quite quickly after the new owners moved in. I'd work on moving if I were you. And be careful about how you handle "neighbour disputes" because these have to be declared on the information form when you move and it could put people off. So weigh up involving the police with that.

Good luck. It's misery when people destroy your peace like this.

FlamingoQueen · 21/06/2025 13:06

I think that all of your neighbours should go outside at 6.30am with power tools. And when they are still making a noise at midnight, you all need to make more noise. This may not work if there are young children or night shift workers, but you need to do something.

I'd be lying if I said murder had never crossed my mind. Especially on a night like tonight where the options are to listen to the show all night or boil alive (air con unit is being delivered next week to hopefully save us).

I also have to admit that I'm scared of reporting further. I did call to report an incident to the police a couple of months ago. The father and oldest teenage son were beating the living crap out of each other on the front garden as the rest of the family screamed. The police turned up and it quieted down.

The problem is after they left the father/son combo managed to put aside their fight for the greater good, I.e. harassing me for the next couple of weeks as they figured no one else had ever complained (to their face).

I know I could have kept calling the police back, but they didn't really do anything when they came out and I didn't want things to keep escalating. They went back to just being their usual arsehole selves after a while.

Concentrate on leaving. You can’t do anything else.

people say on these situations to keep a log , etc. Really, if you go down that road you will just be a target.

I saw it on a council estate I lived briefly as a kid and as a new solicitor, centuries ago. You can’t win. Just get away. It will only get worse and you’ve already made yourself known as it were

people like this at just selfish shits and really it’s almost impossible to do much about it.

BurntBroccoli · 21/06/2025 12:57

Feel so sorry for you 😞

Diddlydays · 21/06/2025 12:56

Do you have children? Maybe it's time to start a recorder quintet in your garden. Only of absolute beginners of course. Maybe mix in a jumperoo. You need to metaphorically smoke them out of their garden it's the only viable choice

shuggles · 21/06/2025 12:45

What's the alternative?

Answer would be to stop seeing victims of dregs like that as a problem saying "just put headphones in" and "well live in the middle of the woods then" and start fully seeing the behaviour of the AS twints as antisocial and them being problem and telling them that if they want to make noise like that THEY should move to middle of nowhere. It's only relatively recently the, what one could call a, "defence" of antisocial behaviour started. "well it's their garden they can fo what they want." and "You don't know their lives❤️"
It's also organisations who are the problem with their inability to heavily step on people ruining neighbourhoods.

Shift the blame back to where it belongs, if that makes sense, and start heavily fining people or something.

BumpyWinds · 21/06/2025 12:50

A relative of mine did this when their neighbours were having yet another noisy party... took them ages to figure out why the electric had gone off any by that point it took the wind out of their sails and they all just went to bed...

Only useful a) if their meter box is out the front; and b) that they have no cameras and you don't get caught!

Do these "respectful people" make fun of people who go to butlins? Maybe you should form a friendly little club

Where does Op make fun of Butlins?
I think you are reading stuff into her words that aren't there.

I assumed it was short hand for "busy and noisy"?

I didn't see her say anything nasty about Butlins or the people who go there?

godmum56 · 21/06/2025 09:43

why does anybody end up with an abusive partner?

Yes, what's the answer?

The overwhelming majority of men are nothing like this, and single men massively outnumber single women. So why did she pick this man?

PiggyPigalle · 21/06/2025 10:41

You think OP should live as though she was deaf, because society's dross has moved in next door?

What's the alternative?

No advice but lots of sympathy. My pisshead neighbour doesn’t have a hot tub, bar or outdoor tv but on her most recent bender spent last Sunday torturing us all with 12 hours of crap eighties music (started at 5am!!!) followed by noisy sex in the garden in the late afternoon despite having young children living either side. The selfishness of some people is unreal.

If she repeats the al fresco sex, could you have an accident with your hose?

500mileslong · 21/06/2025 12:42

If it’s privately rented op I’d really try to find out who from and report every issue to them every single time in the hope it makes it too much hassle for them to stay there…

This is a strange focus you are going with.

I went to Butlins many times as a child. Butlins is fine. But Butlins is not fine when it is condensed into a tiny terraced garden.

Poor you. Can you rent yours out and rent somewhere else quieter?

Speak to their landlord?

Theseventhmagpie · 21/06/2025 12:07

Yes they are if they are aware that the tenants are causing a nuisance (in the legal sense of the word) and they fail to take action.

You are misinformed

Catparty · 21/06/2025 12:35

I am with you, OP! Terraced houses with clueless wankers next door are hideous. We are in similar situation with barking, untrained two huge beasts dogs yelping and howling when kept in our let out. Speaking to neighbours resulted in them stopping acknowledging us. Worried about raising this with our council as dreaming of selling up and moving to detached property when market stabilises a bit…

coolbreezes · 21/06/2025 12:34

It's not a detached/terrace house problem, it's a cunty neighbour problem

That level of noise on a regular basis is totally cunty whatever size your house is

Temporarynameforthisone · 21/06/2025 12:21

Sounds like you have what Micky Flanagan would call The cunt family living next door.

I feel your pain.

Also live in a terraced house and neighbours teenage son gave up school at about 12, mum has made little effort to get him back to school, now at 14 he ‘games’ with windows wide open shouting every expletive you can imagine. He seems to have a ‘crew’ now of equally shitty drop out kids as friends and they all hang out at his house now.

MercurialMouse · 21/06/2025 12:20

Bepo77 · 21/06/2025 11:18

Any other classist digs you'd like to add into your post? Butlins, primitive life form, there must be more. Maybe something about universal credit?
