Hell is a terraced house with a hot tub, bar and outdoor tv.

Or more accurately, hell is what I'm going through living next door to this abominable set up.

Family from hell moved in not that long ago. Drunken pot smoking father who attended a house party in the mid 90's and apparently never left, a wife who to be fair seems like she's lost the will to live or smile, and an assortment of teenagers who like to invite all their mates round and shout about dildos and cumming in people's eyes.

The garden has slowly morphed into something resembling a butlins, which is fairly impressive as we all only have narrow postage stamp gardens. It started with a hot tub, progressed to an outdoor bar, and has culminated this weekend in some sort of wooden shack thing made of fences with a tin roof, housing an outdoor television.

The second the sun comes out it is thumping tunes ALL day, which to be fair sometimes gets turned down a little at 11 pm. Unfortunately tonight it has now been replaced by some shitty action movie being loudly played in the garden, as the family members converse in their usual dulcet yells. Must have affected their hearing with all that drum and bass.

Yes, we have tried talking to them. The father seemed to indicate through grunts that he had understood my attempt at communication with a primitive life form, however we were then treated to angle grinding in the street regularly for a few nights, as he loudly complained about the 'stuck up bitch next door' and proclaimed that I'd be 'having that'.

No, I currently can't move. I'm working on it but realistically not going to be any time soon. I'd imagine the house would be a hard sell at the moment too, most prospective owners would run a mile.

I guess I just wanted to rant, I'm so tired. I've actually found myself on the brink of tears a few times tonight, mainly from frustration. They went away last week and it was wonderful. The entire estate was practically silent, just the usual buzz of every day life going on made me really appreciate just what loud obnoxious bastards they are.

@Vitrolinsanity this is exactly what I do. And then I retreat shaking thinking oh no hope I haven't made it worse for myself.

So far it's worked. Only would do this when I have 3am wake ups with alarms etc ringing for over a bloody hour etc or what you describe.

Sometimes its fire with fire because it’s all you’ve got, isn’t it?

TesChique · 21/06/2025 19:58

XjustagirlX · 21/06/2025 19:48

Again I’m just trying to understand the thinking.

did you know other people would hear your noise but you didn’t care? You viewed your discomfort of headphones more important than your neighbours discomfort?

or did you think your neighbours wouldn’t mind the noise?

or did the neighbours inconvenience not even cross your mind?

Tbh I only used the speaker to slightly amplify my phone volume, we're not talking booming decibels speaker on max volume, we're talking the volume level of a conversation so I can't help but think you're overreacting slightly

XjustagirlX · 21/06/2025 19:48

TesChique · 21/06/2025 12:02

I find them uncomfortable

frozendaisy · 21/06/2025 19:48

And yes we have music on but we have to put up with power tool and wood burner treated wood smoke all winter so yeah fuck the neighbours they are selfish and polluting, both noise and sir wise

wait until next week we shall be enjoying Glastonbury at home

frozendaisy · 21/06/2025 19:43

It’s a hot summer solstice
Enjoy kick back

sitting in deathly silence in garden feels like waiting for death especially on an evening like this

SquashedSquid · 21/06/2025 19:30

I genuinely don't understand what it is that make some people think that it's OK to play loud music, or do anything antisocial, in residential areas.

Is it that they're too thick to realise? Surely even the most unintelligent of creatures know that if their music is loud, it is disruptive to others?

Is it entitlement? That they'll do as they please, because fuck everyone else? But this would mean they don't care about sleeping children, elderly or sick people, people with mental illness etc, that their actions could have an impact on. Are people really that selfish?

Or do some people think that's normal behaviour? Again, surely not?

No one wants to have to listen to anyone else's shit music. Gardens are supposed to be peaceful and calm. An escape. Inside the house, even more so. If someone in their own home can hear a neighbour's music, that's just not OK.

Pleaseshutthefuckup · 21/06/2025 19:21

Based on update - I would definitely find opportunities to go for a walk in the street and if other neighbours are accessible easily, start a conversation and find out what they're feeling. All with a view to reporting as a collective to the landlord / letting agent.

Obviously have to be discrete in case neighbours drop you in it and pie head family get worse.

The reminds me so much of the new film ' Restless' I watched just last week. Are you sure this isn't a promo for this? 😆

In all seriousness, it isn't funny. I agree with whoever said this can send people over the edge. I'm housebound so much with health and this sort of neighbour situation would really make me think about running them over as a last fucking hurrah tbh.

Vitrolinsanity · 21/06/2025 19:20

I bloody love Butlins. The thing is you know it’ll be a crazy few days, then you all go home. Recreating the experience in your garden is about as cunty as you can get.

I also love my garden. Invite friends round occasionally and listen to music. It goes off or we move inside at 10ish. So when my neighbours ramped up their Ibefa party music last Sunday night at midnight I was singularly unimpressed. To be fair, poking my head out the window and shrieking “are you fucking kidding me, turn that shit down” did have the immediate desired effect. I was trembling afterwards at what all the other neighbours thought about me.

partyboat356 · 21/06/2025 19:14

There is a ray of hope here. That they are renting. I would speak to the to other neighbours who're also sick to the back teeth of them and try and find out a way to find out who is the owner of the house. If you all speak out together it makes your case much stronger and they would have a harder time labelling you as a complaining neighbour. There are more of you decent neighbours than there are of them. I think the key lies here. The more neighbours complaining the better as it's better all round if it's not just you.

partyboat356 · 21/06/2025 19:06

Oh god, OP. I am so sorry you're going through this hell! I wish I had an answer.

EagerPlayer · 21/06/2025 18:00

Wow. I have no advice to offer , but you have my utmost sympathy. I would hate to have to live with your neighbours.

I have had my share of annoying noisy neighbours in terraced housing as the house next to us is rented out, the landlord does little repairs and it has a damp problem so people only tend to stay for a year so we have had a lot of neighbours in the 20 years we've lived here. Most of them seem to like noise in one form or another, whether it is loud parties multiple times a week, loud music, a husky which was never walked and howled for hours at a time. Lots of them like putting music on really loudly in the house, but then having the back door open so they can sit in the garden listening to it.

A few weeks ago DP and I were talking about the inconsiderateness of it and how if everyone decided to do that no one would be able to enjoy their music, and then it hit me maybe we should try it. So the next time they put their music on to listen to in the garden I put mine on and opened the windows and back door. I genuinely like heavy metal and a lot of bassey shouty music which I know a lot of people don't like. Incredibly since then they have not done it again. They are still listening to music in the house, but it is not so loud that it stops me from hearing my tv. So DP and I came to the conclusion that they must really have been so thick that they didn't realise what it was like for others when they had their music on really loud. So maybe if you haven't already tried it, you should be noisey when they are trying to watch their outdoor tv, it might get the point across better than just asking them to keep it down. And if they ask you to turn it down you can at least point out the irony to them.

I feel I should say that the neighbours I did this to I only did it as I felt if they tried to punch me I had a chance of fighting back. There are some neighbours we had where I wouldn't have risked doing anything that I thought would possibly wind them up to violence as with those neighbours I would have stood no chance (fortunately they got removed by the police one day and we never saw them again).

I was just going to suggest that OP play some black metal or doom metal, like Burzum or Sun 0))), it sounds like it comes from the depths of hell and might scare them into being more considerate 🤘

cumbriaisbest · 21/06/2025 16:34

I don't think this is helpful at all, must seem oh so funny if you don't live there.

LlynTegid · 21/06/2025 16:04

spicemaiden · 21/06/2025 10:34

I vote for you getting the biggest outdoor speakers you can get and blasting out Enya, Kenny G, Michael Bolton and The Venga Boys

I'd add Coldplay to the list.

If we had a functioning DVSA I'd ask their driving licence is revoked on the grounds of their drug abuse.

that's the same as the mosquito gadget i posted about upthread.

Yes, that type of thing, but this is more powerful and you can adjust the output so that it works on adults.

SorbetSarnie · 21/06/2025 08:54

I will seriously consider this and may add some sort of thorny plant, I have already had the teenagers vaulting into and out of the garden to retrieve lost footballs.

Last night the neighbours ended up having a heated argument with someone else further down the street. Father of the year was promising he had no qualms about hitting an old man though thankfully it all went quiet around 2 am.

There is some hope that the rest of the neighbours are starting to rebel too. This morning there has been two sets of power tools going off from 7am and I've heard neighbours talking loudly who have been quiet for years! That is unusual, this estate is usually more of a 'say hello occasionally and then politely ignore the other exists.'

Their house is privately rented, but I'd have no idea how to find out who the landlord is as it's been a rental since we moved in 8 years ago.

And unfortunately I own this house.

Get the landlord's details from the Land Registry? It's been a long time since I did property law so I can't say how much detail they'd have (probably not contact details) but certainly his or her name which would hopefully not be just John Smith or something and would allow you to do some digging via SM/electoral register or something. Accessing the Land Registry is something like £1 per house searched.

I'm surprised tbh that the landlord would be fine with a hot tub etc being installed! Sounds a nightmare OP, you have my sympathies.

CherryRipe1 · 21/06/2025 15:43

If anyone has neighbours from hell listening through Bluetooth speakers in the garden it can be hacked with your own playlist. Wait for a gap then away you go😁

Dh says it was very high frequency sound.

He bought a high frequency generator called a function signal generator code: XR2206 from Amazon and runs off a 9volt battery. You plug the output of that into a mini power amplifier code: POHOVE then put the outlet of that into a loud speaker model: VISATON model VS-FRS8/4. He says these are showing as out of stock, but they're sold elsewhere.

They do make ready made high frequency generators with speaker built in, but they're more expensive.

You turn the sound right up, but just beyond the threshold of your hearing if you're older than them and aim it over their fence (we fixed ours to the side of our shed). The hot tub was about five metres away. They'd hear a very high pitched whine, but you can't hear where it's coming from. They might not actually consciously hear it, but it's enough to irritate the brain.

The best noise deterrent is a very low frequency, which causes a feeling of anxiety and nausea etc., but that's a bit harder to produce. That makes you feel ill.

If they have an outdoor television you can get a TV Be Gone kit and see if you can either put it together yourself or get an electronic minded friend to do it for you. The kits can't be sold ready made for legal reasons. This will turn any television off. Kit is only about £10. You will have full control over their TV.

You sound like her neighbours , entitled, selfish and everything that is wrong with people of today !!

These stories remind me of a horrible thing that happened to friends of ours about 20 years ago.

They lived in a ground-floor flat with their son, who was a good (electric) guitar player. He rehearsed with his friends in a nearby hall but never ever played in the house without headphones (he had a little amp for that).

One day, son comes home with his guitar and says "Hey, we have new upstairs neighbours, I said hello as they went up the stairs".

Three days later, our friends get a knock on the door from the police. "We've had complaints about noise coming from your house. Your son is playing heavy metal at all hours of the day. Please make him stop." Our friends are confused, they hadn't been away, their son was definitely not making any noise. A couple more similar visits followed, with threats of court action (I don't remember the exact legal context, it wasn't in the UK).

A week later, upstairs held their first party. A full-on rave until 5am. Our friends, groggily not realising what had been set up, finally called the police, who were monumentally unsympathetic. "Oh yes? Not just getting revenge, are you?". And the raves and banging and shouting just continued after that, and the police basically stopped answering the phone

It took about 18 months to sort out, once three other sets of neighbours had gotten involved. It turned out that the people upstairs had been forced to leave their previous flat in another town due to their noise and so they had decided to poison the well when they arrived in their new place, and blaming our friends' son's guitar was a perfect excuse. First-mover advantage, it's called. Utter psychopaths. You just have to hope that you will get through life with as little interaction as possible with this kind of people.

ElsieMc · 21/06/2025 15:17

@Bepo77 is the actual neighbour thus the attempt to portray the op as something she is clearly not. There is always one derailer with a chip on their shoulder who is serially offended, in this case someone rather strangely focussed on Butlins. I personally preferred Pontins. You have my sympathies op. You dont need to justify yourself.

Justkeepswiimming · 21/06/2025 14:58

I have something similar over the road from me. They seem to make an active effort to be as antisocially load as possible. Last week they loudly discussed the fact that they opened the window as wide as possible even though it was a bit chilly. Lots of drugs involved, really really loud just talking. I have no idea how you can be that loud, it's astonishing. I feel for the people next door. They have young kids and it must be absolutely miserable. I feel your pain!

These stories are the reason I bought a detached bungalow on a road with other bungalows.

Wow, that's helpful.
