Hell is a terraced house with a hot tub, bar and outdoor tv.

Or more accurately, hell is what I'm going through living next door to this abominable set up.

Family from hell moved in not that long ago. Drunken pot smoking father who attended a house party in the mid 90's and apparently never left, a wife who to be fair seems like she's lost the will to live or smile, and an assortment of teenagers who like to invite all their mates round and shout about dildos and cumming in people's eyes.

The garden has slowly morphed into something resembling a butlins, which is fairly impressive as we all only have narrow postage stamp gardens. It started with a hot tub, progressed to an outdoor bar, and has culminated this weekend in some sort of wooden shack thing made of fences with a tin roof, housing an outdoor television.

The second the sun comes out it is thumping tunes ALL day, which to be fair sometimes gets turned down a little at 11 pm. Unfortunately tonight it has now been replaced by some shitty action movie being loudly played in the garden, as the family members converse in their usual dulcet yells. Must have affected their hearing with all that drum and bass.

Yes, we have tried talking to them. The father seemed to indicate through grunts that he had understood my attempt at communication with a primitive life form, however we were then treated to angle grinding in the street regularly for a few nights, as he loudly complained about the 'stuck up bitch next door' and proclaimed that I'd be 'having that'.

No, I currently can't move. I'm working on it but realistically not going to be any time soon. I'd imagine the house would be a hard sell at the moment too, most prospective owners would run a mile.

I guess I just wanted to rant, I'm so tired. I've actually found myself on the brink of tears a few times tonight, mainly from frustration. They went away last week and it was wonderful. The entire estate was practically silent, just the usual buzz of every day life going on made me really appreciate just what loud obnoxious bastards they are.

Get talking to your neighbours OP. Sounds like everyone is sick of them.

Some good ideas from PP
Stinky comfrey tea
Universal remote to mess with the TV
A mosquito to repel the teens
Mozart to repel the adults
Thorny plants to block the view

You can probably implement most of those with plausible deniability.

How long have they been in the house? You may find that old to let ads are still on the Internet somewhere so it might be worth searching to see if you can find out who the letting agent/ landlord is.

Best of luck.

On this theme, what about one of those noise emitting box thingies that only teens can hear?

redkite27 · 22/06/2025 12:50

I am sorry this sounds awful. I suggest complain to the council formally about the noise every time and record it for evidence. Eventually the council will have to act

You’re going to have to speak to your council. Do they rent or own ? Is there any neighbours also frustrated by their behaviour ? If you all complain to the council together then it will be more effective.

One option could be you renting your home out to someone equally annoying.

While you rent elsewhere. Then sell it as a rental with tenants in situ. A landlord will buy it.

LesLavandes · 22/06/2025 11:58

Are the other neighbours upset too?

you are not remotely funny

mylovedoesitgood · 22/06/2025 11:34

I don't know if anyone's mentioned this yet, but when you put your house up for sale, you have a legal obligation to tell any prospective buyers, so reporting your neighbours could have awful consequences. In my experience, people like them don't change, so you have to somehow. Personally I would put your house on the market now to test the waters, and potentially take a hit on a price reduction, if it means moving. I realise you may think it's easy for me to say all this, but I've had more than my fair share of obnoxious neighbours over the years.

Could you get together enough money to employ a hitman?

It's not as expensive as you'd think, apparently!

This is terrible advice. This would be green lighting worse and worse behavior, and the neighboour sounds vile

NamefromNowhere · 22/06/2025 09:57

I don't know if any PP have mentioned it, but finding out who the landlord is might be a good idea. Check on land registry. Log all asb with the police and council. When you've found them, inform the landlord about their tenants' behaviour. The landlord is ultimately responsible.

Agapornis · 22/06/2025 09:46

Speak to all the neighbours to decide on collective action. Contact the owner, then the council if they fail to address it - with as many neighbours as you can muster.

The Land Registry will have the name and address of the owner.

BigDahliaFan · 22/06/2025 08:35

Safety in numbers. Get other neighbours on board and approach the landlord.

I am so sorry, it is hell on earth and now we have this heatwave which acts like a summoning spell for some of the worst anti-social behaviour that many people seem to revel in.

I have posted on here quite a few times about my neighbours who have turned a two up two down into an official HMO, filled the yard up with scrap and rubbish, have the doors and windows open in year round apart ftom when the weather is really bad. This heat plus their noise and the fact that I have to keep my doors and windows shut to try and lessen the worst of their racket is breaking me so I have a good idea of what you are going through. They are Roma and have "no English" so any interactions I have with them has to be done via Google Translate and my pleas for them to keep the noise down is met with laughter and shoulder shrugging and needless to say the noise and the mess carry on. The council are useless, they do have and should be using powers to hold the landlord to account, to enforce repairs and stop the overcrowding but drag their feet and say that there is no money to actively pursue the landlord. They can take landlords to court and in the past they did and some got massive fines but the council here is broke. They can't even afford to sweep the streets these days. I tend to stay in the front of my (tiny) home to aviod the worst ot the noise and use earplugs or my wireless headphones and a soothing play list. It really pisses me off that this is my third summer of this and while I would likd to offer you hope that there are processes to sort it, sadly this has not been my experience.

Absolute hell to have to live like that, you have my sympathy!

Have you told a) your local councillors, and b) your MP? If the council are ignoring your complaints, try escalating them.

I’d hop over the fence and smash the TV with a hammer one early morning. Or shoot a hole through it if you know someone with a gun.

You wouldn't though would you, let's be honest.

If its a private rental get on to The Council

There may well be registration requirements in your area that have not been complied with.

Also there may be issues over electrical safety that need to be addressed by The Landlord

OP- Are you me? My day off yesterday…they were ALL day in the inflatable hot tub , windows open, music blaring…I was close to tears by 4pm - sat in the garden trying to read my book, earbuds everything…no chance .No peace. Same happening right now😩

A book! Peace and quiet? In your own garden?

Seriously, there are some real morons in society these days, and I feel for people who have to share space with them.

OnAMissionToLoseWeight · 21/06/2025 10:20

I’m more for a less confrontational approach when it comes to these types.

I would secretly film them and find out who the LL is and pass on the footage. I would also purchase a universal remote control and constantly turn off their tv.

Yes! Yes! Yes!

Get the landlord's details from the Land Registry? It's been a long time since I did property law so I can't say how much detail they'd have (probably not contact details) but certainly his or her name which would hopefully not be just John Smith or something and would allow you to do some digging via SM/electoral register or something. Accessing the Land Registry is something like £1 per house searched.

I'm surprised tbh that the landlord would be fine with a hot tub etc being installed! Sounds a nightmare OP, you have my sympathies.

You can obtain details of ownership via a Land Registry title register which is £7.00 these days.
The registered proprietor should be up to date as it’s a legal requirement.
Go onto the Gov.uk site to search.

elm26 · 21/06/2025 21:10

This is my idea of hell, I really feel for you OP.

When we were first married, we private rented a terraced house and next door in moved a family where the parents were so high constantly that it became a daily occurrence that I found one of their toddlers running around the car park with no shoes or clothes on at random times throughout the day or night. They had a 6, 3, and 2 year old who used to knock on our door to ask for food, I’d always make some toast and give it to them with some fruit. I reported it many times to social services and also called the police as they used to physically fight in the garden. They would play loud drum and bass music all the time. One night it all came to a head, he broke her jaw and was put in prison, she lost custody of the children who all went to their aunt who had apparently tried to convince them to hand over custody for years and the mum died of a drug overdose whilst he was in prison. I still think of the kids now almost 10 years later and hope they got the love and care they deserved from their aunt.

I don’t have any advice because I know reporting it can escalate any anti social behaviour (luckily for me he was always too high to care to pick a fight with us) but others have some great ideas. X

BurntBroccoli · 21/06/2025 21:10

SquashedSquid · 21/06/2025 19:30

I genuinely don't understand what it is that make some people think that it's OK to play loud music, or do anything antisocial, in residential areas.

Is it that they're too thick to realise? Surely even the most unintelligent of creatures know that if their music is loud, it is disruptive to others?

Is it entitlement? That they'll do as they please, because fuck everyone else? But this would mean they don't care about sleeping children, elderly or sick people, people with mental illness etc, that their actions could have an impact on. Are people really that selfish?

Or do some people think that's normal behaviour? Again, surely not?

No one wants to have to listen to anyone else's shit music. Gardens are supposed to be peaceful and calm. An escape. Inside the house, even more so. If someone in their own home can hear a neighbour's music, that's just not OK.

Yes. Complete entitlement and no thought about anyone else.

I was just going to suggest that OP play some black metal or doom metal, like Burzum or Sun 0))), it sounds like it comes from the depths of hell and might scare them into being more considerate 🤘

DS often has blasted his black metal CDs through the wall to our neighbours. They probably would have been exhausted from hearing it and unlikely struggled to sleep after stopping their noise at 3am...serves them right.
