It's gone 10pm and the neighbours are still making noise in the garden

My alarm goes off for a 12 hour shift in 7 hours. It's Thursday night. Why are some people so unbelievably inconsiderate.

We’re talking 10pm here - not early hours of he morning. As long as they’re not blasting loud music or being rowdy it’s fine.

I am going to be really defensive on this topic as my neighbours talk excessively loud from 10pm til 2/3am with friends at the weekend. We hear them right through the party wall. There are some selfish people around!

A vibrating alarm wouldn't wake me, I'm exhausted after an already 40 hour working week.

Can I suggest a snoozeband or something. Can you bluetooth them to your phone. 10pm and still light is such a short lived joy.

Quiet chat is fine. Loud talking and laughing as though you’re at the pub? Not fine.

Lol what if you live next door to the pub then? Expect everyone there to be silent?

McCartneyOnTheHeath · 19/06/2025 22:11

Are you sure? I can easily hear my phone alarm through silicone earplugs.

I have silicone earplugs too and always hear my alarm.

Stompythedinosaur · 20/06/2025 08:02

Unfortunately people are allowed to use their garden in a reasonable way.

If they are blasting music that's pretty unreasonable, but chatting seems fine to me.

Ultimately, this is normal neighborhood noise, so your issue to work around. You can't reasonably expect neighbours to go to bed early because of your working hours.

Any type of noise that is causing her not to sleep is valid.

That’s not what the law says. It depends on whether the noise is considered excessive and OP hasn’t specified probably because it’s an entirely normal level and she’d be handed her arse.

Rosscameasdoody · 20/06/2025 07:59

BatchCookBabe · 19/06/2025 22:53

YANBU @Donaldduck22 and I can't believe you're getting such a hard time on here. Really, people should start to STFU after 9pm, and quieten down... And they shouldn't start any noise til 8am. The 11pm to 7am thing needs changing to no noise between 9pm and 8am. Obviously, normal household sounds yes, but no loud music, loud voices, loud TV, and stupid 'inconsiderate ass' noise. And no bloody rowdy behaviour in the garden this late at night!

Not sure what to suggest though sorry.

Edited

Not sure what to suggest though sorry.

There are a few suggestions l’d have for you !! 9pm - 8am ? Really ?

RumJerrySailorRum · 20/06/2025 07:57

I work shifts.
I need to be up at 2am to get to work on time.
I'm a very light sleeper, regularly do a 10 hour shift on about 2 hours sleep.
My neighbours are all decent people, but yes they sometimes disturb me.
Not their problem I work irregular hours. It's mine.

KimberleyClark · 20/06/2025 07:55

Rosscameasdoody · 20/06/2025 07:48

So we should all have a 10pm curfew then ? Just so we don’t accidentally upset anyone ? Batshit.

Tone what down though? A chat? A noisy party? OP hasn't specified what the noise is

ExercicenformedeZ · 20/06/2025 07:53

YABVU. It's 10pm, not 2 am. Get a grip. Your schedule isn't their problem.

user1476613140 · 20/06/2025 07:49

See, this kind of response hacks me right off!! Why should the OP have to do that? They should tone it right down after 10!

It's so unusual to have good weather and people want to enjoy it. Can you not use some earplugs?

This. It’s really antisocial to make noise in your garden late at night on a weeknight when people have their windows open and work the next day. And sounds really carry on a summer night.

Pleaseshutthefuckup · 19/06/2025 23:15

Wow wow wow. It's the witching hour. What sort of pie heads are replying to your thread, I really wonder.

OP, you are being gaslit out of your reality by the unhappy MN mob.

Not unreasonable of you at all. It's just decent behaviour to shut it. At the wknd you'd have more understanding. I get it. Some people just don't have decent manners.

Edited

The witching hour ? 10pm ? Really ? We were in the garden until gone eleven last night, as were our neighbours - chatting and pottering, and generally enjoying the weather. What on earth leads you to believe that that constitutes being a ‘pie head’ and not having any manners ? OP hasn’t elaborated on what the noise levels were but you’ve jumped straight to excessive. They have a right to enjoy their home and if the noise isn’t excessive then OP will just have to learn to live with it. Very apt username by the way.

KimberleyClark · 20/06/2025 07:45

AffIt · 19/06/2025 22:15

Jesus christ, what is WRONG with you people?

The OP is right, Thursday is a working day for the vast majority of people and an expectation to have shut the fuck up by 10pm is entirely within the bounds of normal behaviour. That's just common decency.

Seriously, the amount of people on here who'd start a fight in an empty room...

MsOvary · 20/06/2025 07:43

Put on a sleep podcast and set a timer. There’s some good ones on BBC sounds.

My neighbour loves to go out at about 11 every night with her partner for their last smoke of the day. I listen to boring stories or the sleeping forecast and I’m soon fast asleep.

Booboobagins · 20/06/2025 07:40

Sadly 11pm to 7am is when garden noise needs to stop.

I feel for you. My neighbours are forever having parties (Filipinos are like this). Garden noise is typically ok - they were visited many times by EHOs in tgeir previous house) but its people leaving in the am that Ps me off. I lost it recently with the younger crowd - we're on a private road and they park outside my house. We'll its been deathly quiet since!!! Seems to me speaking to them might help.

Good luck.

BTW you can hear alarms with earplugs. Maybe turn it up a little and make more noise when you get up.

Rosscameasdoody · 20/06/2025 07:37

Cocoda · 20/06/2025 01:54

It might be only 10pm but she has to be up at 5am for a 12 hour shift!!

Which, if her neighbours aren’t making excessive noise, is entirely OP’s problem.

Fundayout2025 · 20/06/2025 07:36

allyjay · 20/06/2025 06:22

Well great but what about all the kids that need to get up for school, and in many cases do exams, are they a minority too? Noisy, inconsiderate behaviour disrupts them at night also.

Well actually the kids doing exams are a bloody minority. The exams pretty much finished anyway..

And smaller kids surely are used to sleeping through a bit of noise. M y DD is living in the middle of noisy roadworks that have been going on for months Drilling etc starts at 7. Doesn't wake the kids.

And tbh the OP hasn't specified whether the neighbours we're chatting and laughing or having a full scale race. There's a big difference

Rosscameasdoody · 20/06/2025 07:31

MaryBeardsShoes · 20/06/2025 07:24

Also, wasn’t it fairly dark at 10pm? Hardly lovely and sunny.

Wasn’t that dark here at 10pm, and it was very warm. We were sitting in the garden until past eleven, so were our neighbours both sides, and many people have garden lighting. I think it’s all about what’s reasonable, and if the noise levels aren’t excessive then l don’t see how OP can expect the neighbours to cut their evening short because she has to get up early.

SillyMillie90 · 20/06/2025 07:30

SatsumaDog · 20/06/2025 07:17

Blaring music and screeching and hollering is unacceptable at any time imo. If people want to listen to blaring music they should wear bloody earphones.

I live surrounded by young children so although I do agree about the hollering and screeching, I’ve had to pick my battles for my sanity.

Boredlass · 20/06/2025 07:25

Donaldduck22 · 19/06/2025 22:10

If your alarm also goes off at 5am and you can manage in 5 or 6 hours of sleep and then do a 12 hour shift on your feet then I'm impressed.

I get up at 5am to work a 10 hr shift at Amazon. I’m still up past 10pm especially in nice weather. I use ear plugs and I always hear the alarm. You will too.

Rosscameasdoody · 20/06/2025 07:25

Donaldduck22 · 19/06/2025 22:15

Good to know, once it's 11pm I'll file a council complaint.

And they’ll do nothing unless they consider the noise to be excessive. Which, if it’s just the normal sounds of your neighbours enjoying their home and garden, it’s unlikely to be.
