It's gone 10pm and the neighbours are still making noise in the garden

My alarm goes off for a 12 hour shift in 7 hours. It's Thursday night. Why are some people so unbelievably inconsiderate.

OP posts:

Different people need to deal with their own shit and not expect everyone to pander to their schedule of needs.

10pm isn’t late for a lot of people. If it’s late for you, then find a solution that helps you sleep.

So Op getting up at 5am and being loud isn't going to be a problem then?
Noise at 10pm is selfish.

Personally I would be out at 5am with saucepan lids 😂

Different people with different health conditions need different amounts of sleep. I know what I need to be able to function and do my job properly.

Jeez louise - first warm sunny evening in a long while, too hot to sleep inside for most of us at that hour, and then dripfeeding (earplugs don't work, child distressed by noises, alluding to different health conditions etc.). STILL doesn't mean the world will revolve around you and your long working weeks and early starts. Being considerate of others (as you're so keen on) also means thinking of others too from your own perch. Warm, sunny evening, 10 PM not being that bloody late -- how often do we get to enjoy that? AND sound does travel v. easily when the traffic noise etc. has died down.
If your child has special needs and gets distressed by noise, surely that applies before 10 PM as well, so not really the neighbours' fault either. I GET that it's hard, but noise at any time would presumably yield a similar reaction?

It wasn't 2 AM and drunken cooking sherry shouting, still almost light at 10 PM, and it's summer. Finally!

It's clouding over today - you'll get your rest. And it will be cold and raining soon enough.

Not most of us though. Sadly the world doesn't revolve around your particular needs. 10 pm is not that unreasonable.

Just so you know, I use earplugs regularly, foam ones that expand to fit your ear? And I have my alarm nearby and I always hear it. Not relevant to this situation but in case it happens again in the future. X

This is where I have found the white noise app useful. It stops when my phone alarm sounds so I don’t miss it.

@Donaldduck22 you are coming across as a selfish person.
The world doesn't stop because YOU work.

How ironic!

Irrelevant if you live on a residential street not next to a pub.

Lol someone has to live next door to the pub ( even on a residential street sometimes). So do they think they ought to tell pubgoers that chatting after 10 pm isn't allowed?

SatsumaDog · 20/06/2025 09:35

SillyMillie90 · 20/06/2025 07:30

I live surrounded by young children so although I do agree about the hollering and screeching, I’ve had to pick my battles for my sanity.

I agree, you have to accept a certain amount of noise especially from children. Generally I wouldn’t complain about normal playing noise, but there is a point when it crosses from that to just screaming for the sake of screaming. That I do mind. There is a distinct difference and as a parent I have taught my children where that line lies. I wish all parents did the same, but some just seem to either not hear it or choose not to.

LakieLady · 20/06/2025 09:35

TerrifiedandWorried · 19/06/2025 22:18

Mine have just started cutting their hedge with electric trimmers

Now that is unreasonable! There are different noise rules for noisy outdoor work.

Most people aren’t though. If it’s a one off then 10pm isn’t too late. It’s not their fault you work shifts.

CantStopMoving · 20/06/2025 08:55

KimberleyClark · 20/06/2025 07:45

This. It’s really antisocial to make noise in your garden late at night on a weeknight when people have their windows open and work the next day. And sounds really carry on a summer night.

Lots of people work weekends- why is it antisocial on weekdays but not weekends?

rainbowstardrops · 20/06/2025 08:55

AffIt · 19/06/2025 22:15

Jesus christ, what is WRONG with you people?

The OP is right, Thursday is a working day for the vast majority of people and an expectation to have shut the fuck up by 10pm is entirely within the bounds of normal behaviour. That's just common decency.

Seriously, the amount of people on here who'd start a fight in an empty room...

Absolutely this!
This is partly why I dislike the summer - because some people are just so selfish and think they can make as much noise as they like and sod the neighbours.

brunettemic · 20/06/2025 08:53

Feels like a you problem OP. I love though how you get lots of suggestions and say none of them work and they’re all wrong. Tells me a story about you.

CantStopMoving · 20/06/2025 08:50

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 20/06/2025 06:25

Which is sad, really, because I remember a time when British people weren’t. I don’t know exactly what has happened over the span of my lifetime but we seem to have gone from a society where people thought about the feelings of others over their own to an entirely selfish ‘fuck you, I’ll do whatever I like and if you don’t like it that’s your problem’ mentality. I miss manners.

i don’t think that is fair assessment at all. I wouldn’t blast loud music to annoy my neighbours. I wouldn’t mow the lawn at 5am in the morning. I don’t know anyone around me who would.

but I would want to enjoy my garden between the hours of 8am and 11pm as I am allowed. I am sympathetic to people who do awkward hours but I have worked hard to have a garden and in this weather I want to enjoy it. That enjoyment involves talking, kids running about, footballs being kicked etc. yes I wouldn’t be making loud noise after 9pm as I would be conscious people are going to bed but that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t sit outside with the family enjoying their company. I think it is inconsiderate of the neighbours to insist I am not allowed that.

Crazylittleworld · 20/06/2025 08:43

I hope you managed to get some sleep OP. I do feel for you.
We had neighbours have a party until 1.30am OUTSIDE the other day on a WEDNESDAY. They didn’t bat an eyelid when I asked them to quieten down or take it inside as we had children trying to sleep and work to go to.
People are just so selfish. I feel bad when it gets to 9pm just with conversation level between my husband and I so we come in.

Glittertwins · 20/06/2025 08:43

I tend to sleep with background noise and haven’t heard the alarm the next morning - DH has and ends up waking me up before he dozes off again.

Pickingmyselfup · 20/06/2025 08:33

Depends on the noise really.

Party noise so loud talking, singing, music then they really should be keeping it down by 10pm.

Sitting quietly chatting in the garden as a couple is fine.

I do the latter once in a while during the summer, kids have gone to bed so sometimes between 9, 10, occasionally it creeps a bit later but I'm Cinderella so I get twitchy if it gets late!

I won't stop sitting and talking quietly in my own garden on the odd nice summer night we get just like I wouldn't expect those who work shifts to not drive down the street in the early hours.

Rosscameasdoody · 20/06/2025 08:28

user1476613140 · 20/06/2025 08:21

I am going to be really defensive on this topic as my neighbours talk excessively loud from 10pm til 2/3am with friends at the weekend. We hear them right through the party wall. There are some selfish people around!

Have you told them ? Are the walls thin or are they actually excessively loud ? But this is not he same as OP’s issue. 10pm is totally different to early hours of the morning and, the noise levels are a factor - OP hasn’t specified so we don’t know if it’s just normal expected sounds or wild party levels ! And the fact that OP has to be up for work at 5am is entirely her own issue. If OP drives, l don’t suppose her neighbours are too thrilled at her car starting up early every morning. It’s give and take.

sandgrown · 20/06/2025 08:28

It’s rare that the longest day and good weather come together so I think people will make the most of the long nights for the next few days. You know it can’t last so I would suck it up for now . I just love sitting out on a warm night but I don’t play music or chat unless we have visitors
which is rare midweek .

DreamyRedNewt · 20/06/2025 08:28

But you still ha en't explained what the noise was. I think of it was a party with lots of people and music you would have already say it, because everyone would agree that would be inconsiderate. If it was your neighbours having a drink and chatting, that's not unreasonable behaviour at all, you can probable hear them also because your wi dow was open.

Why isa Thursday notok but a Saturday is? Then there is people whoworks weekends too (I used to), so what do we do? Forbid absolutely everything to take i to account everybody's jobs and schedules?

Either it is convenient for you or not, having a drink and chat in the garden at that time is not unrrasonable and this is the noise, I very much doubt the council would be inerested

10pm is still early. I used to have to get up at 2am to be in at 3. Yes it's bloody annoying when people are noisy when you're trying to sleep but you can't expect the world to stop just because you have to get up early.
If you're that exhausted surely you'd sleep anyway.
