It's gone 10pm and the neighbours are still making noise in the garden

My alarm goes off for a 12 hour shift in 7 hours. It's Thursday night. Why are some people so unbelievably inconsiderate.

OP posts:
AllyDally · 20/06/2025 14:35

I dont think your comment about people having different needs is valid TBH. What about people on night shifts, should no one use their gardens between 8am and 3pm just in case night shift workers are sleeping? Why is their need for sleep less important than yours. Also some people work Sat/Sun like my husband who has to be up at 430am at weekends, we wouldn't worry if people were in their gardens till 11pm really or later if one off party.

I have to work late in the evenings, often working over 12 hrs. I would consider that being in the garden till 10pm is fine, probably 11pm. Obviously I would not be having wildly parties etc!

Decisionsdecisions1 · 20/06/2025 14:26

Most people work weekdays and most people get up well before 8am for work. For the majority then a weekday outdoor party that goes on late is disturbing. I'm talking lots of people, lots of raised voices, maybe some music and past 11pm.
And these aren't my neighbours - they're three houses down and disturbing multiple households.

In the hot weather people are doing outside what they would usually do indoors which would disturb fewer people. Of course it's reasonable to be fed up.

From the comments here it seems everyone should just please themselves and stuff anyone else. So if that’s the case, no one should mind me making noise in my garden when I’m up just after 4am or getting on with my gardening at 6 when it’s light outside and the birds are still singing. They should just suck it up because that’s my routine and the world doesn’t revolve around them. Good to know!

Good luck with that….

But that's why there is the law to manage this

You are lawfully permitted to make noise between 7am and 11pm. So no, your examples would not work.

Considering OP stopped replying at 22.18 I think we can assume she nodded off peacefully with no problems

If OP wasn't on MN at 10.18pm she could have gone asleep earlier🤪

Or she begrudgingly took the advice on this thread to put in some earplugs and has slept through her alarm 🤣

Yeh good point.

I suppose weeknights I am thinking for school too, but yeh no matter the day or time I think it would be nice to think of others too.

I agree weekend mornings I am usually up early just like during the week. Not everyone lives for getting pished at the weekend!

Anonymouse22 · 20/06/2025 12:46

Fundayout2025 · 20/06/2025 12:44

Why only weeknights though? What about consideration for those getting up early on weekend mornings

Only on mumsnet is 10pm soooooo early. Yes I get it's not that late but I don't think it's early either. I think if you had loud music on it would be time to start quietening down on a weeknight, and also yes we don't get to do it much so make the most of it but some consideration for others wouldn't go amiss.

Somehow everyone on here is up till 4am, manage 2 hours sleep, off to there very high paying professional job, numerous hobbies every night of the week 😂 meanwhile in the real world I would say 10pm-midnight is a very normal bed time.

And surely airline pilots leave home and return at all sorts of hours. That's definitely not a 9-5 job

Neither is a surgeon

They will be working all sorts of unusual hours, coming home at different times etc

BatchCookBabe · 20/06/2025 12:16

Fitasafiddle1 · 20/06/2025 10:47

It also depends on who you live with. A road full of professionals that work for a living and are raised well, would be considerate certainly after 10pm. Especially if they have professions such as surgeons, air line pilots etc.
Even if it is for the sake of young babies and children resting in their beds we would always keep the noise to an absolute minimum after 9pm mid week. We have raised our children to consider others too.

A road full of benefit claimants that do not work, and never need to be anywhere in the mornings might be less in tune with normal life, and I can see why that might be a problem.

😂

user1476613140 · 20/06/2025 12:16

@Rosscameasdoody

Yep, spoke with them politely three times about the level of noise they are making and how it is affecting us. They don't care.

We now report every incident with the local authority. And I dread every Saturday...

DoctorRoseReturns · 20/06/2025 12:16

Swimminginthedeepbluesky · 20/06/2025 09:51

So Op getting up at 5am and being loud isn't going to be a problem then?
Noise at 10pm is selfish.

Personally I would be out at 5am with saucepan lids 😂

Law is pretty clear

You can make reasonable noise until 11pm and after 7am

Enjoying your garden, unless excessively loud music and screaming, is fine before 11pm

Banging your pot lids at 5am would be unreasonable

StripyShirt · 20/06/2025 12:15

AffIt · 19/06/2025 22:15

Jesus christ, what is WRONG with you people?

The OP is right, Thursday is a working day for the vast majority of people and an expectation to have shut the fuck up by 10pm is entirely within the bounds of normal behaviour. That's just common decency.

Seriously, the amount of people on here who'd start a fight in an empty room...

The OP's username suggests they might be a man, and thus always at fault in any situation.

What a horribly judgemental and totally incorrect post

I actually laughed out loud at this. You definitely haven't met many surgeons or airline pilots if you think they're quiet, subdued people who are silent after 9pm. I know a lot of surgeons and trust me, it is not a profession known for a) being quiet and going to bed early or b) thinking of others before themselves.

LittleBitofBread · 20/06/2025 10:42

what's really odd is your proud assertion about how late you go to bed.

But it wasn't 'a proud assertion' and going to bed after 10pm isn't 'late' for an adult.

The fact that you interpreted a comment about a normal adult bedtime as some sort of boast is what's odd.

I mean, why would you think that was a 'proud assertion'? It's no more a 'proud assertion' than saying 'I usually have toast for breakfast' or 'I've never owned a cat' - it's just a very neutral statement of ordinary fact that applies to a lot of people.

It's not remotely unusual or exceptional for adults to go to bed after 10pm and if you think 'I never go to bed at 10pm' is some sort of outlandish claim that must be a form of bravado, then your thought process is, indeed, odd.

cheapshoes · 20/06/2025 11:41

I couldn't sleep with earplugs, also known to cause ear problems. Ears aren't meant to have things stuck inside them.

It's one evening for possibly a few hours, with no suggestion from the OP that this is an every night thing. I'm sure if she was that desperate to sleep then earplugs would suffice for a while. Or she can stay awake and complain.

Pleaseshutthefuckup · 20/06/2025 11:35

Rosscameasdoody · 20/06/2025 07:20

I don’t think anyone is denying OP’s experience. She’s up at 5 and her neighbours are still enjoying their garden at 10pm. That’s fact. The disagreement is regarding what’s reasonable and what’s not. And while not denying the OP her very real experience, I think if the neighbours are just making a level of noise expected from the enjoyment of their garden on a lovely sunny evening, then it’s unreasonable to expect them to curtail that activity as early as 10pm. Consideration works both ways. If they’re truly making excessive noise, instead of complaining to MN why doesn’t OP politely ask them to tone it down a bit and explain she has to be up early, instead of lying there seething.

I hear you totally. Posters behaviour is so often vile on here when an OP is often pretty vulnerable. I'm certainly stuck for an appropriate description I'll be honest. Difference of opinion does not cut it at all.

I do understand why OP would come here. It is a really tricky and delicate situation and some people don't have great assertiveness skills. I really had to question myself and my feelings about really annoying and inconsiderate neighbour behaviour.

If people didn't struggle to know how best to ask or try at least express themselves there wouldn't be so many posts - including the parking ones, we have on MN endlessly.

I'm so glad I did come here for solace ref my own problem. No CF behaviour which was a comfort. I told my neighbours again. And then I told them again, and they're ok so far and have addressed most of it. 🙏

Some neighbours are nuts. It is a scary concept thinking you could set off a long-standing war. Some people sadly really enjoy that I do believe.
