Will my neighbour ring the police on me for this

I know I know i'm terrible and deserve 25 to life, I'm an awful person, morally bankrupt. The heat has forced me to open all windows and all I have heard is people's shitty little dogs yapping all evening on and off. I just lost my temper, couldn't take it anymore and yelled out the window:

'take your dog inside before I take my rifle outside' and sure enough, the little shit stopped immediately.

Spare me the moral rant, I know I'm a bad person and I don't care, just wondering if I should expect a visit from the bobbies. And I have no rifle or any sort of criminal or even traffic background.

As if, i'm on mumsnet for goodness sake. I just couldn't fucking take it anymore

Not a stupid question though. I'm on MN and I have two rifles and a rifle range in the garden. Stop stereotyping!
Bloody stupid to use a firearm as a threat though.

SquashedMallow · 19/06/2025 23:40

No. They won't call the police!

fount · 19/06/2025 23:40

How very zany of you. I doubt you'll be visited by the police, but your neighbours will dislike you. As apparently the feeling is mutual, I suspect you don't care.

They shouldn't leave their dog outside to bark, but YAstillBU.

i was really expecting to get eaten up here. Mumsnet is so unpredictable

We’re scared of you, you have a rifle 😂

No, good for you OP. That noise drives me insane too.

When I was kid, my parents inexplicably bought a hen and a cockerel for the small garden of our mid terraced house. Unsurprisingly, the cockerel cock a doodle dooed every morning, usually at about 5am. One day, a neighbour got so pissed at the cockerel he bellowed ‘SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!’ at it.

The cockerel carried on but it did then dawn on my parents that perhaps the cockerel was a bit annoying to other people and they gave it away to a farm.

so, you never know, maybe shouting out the window will do the trick

I live next door to both a sodding cockerel (actually I'm not sure I've heard him for a while, perhaps he fell off his perch?) AND a very barky dachshund. If I didn't myself have an occasionally extremely noisy, bangy child (ASD) I'd have a quiet word, but as it is, I mutter 'live and let live' through gritted teeth while their unwalked dog screams at passers-by, pigeons, people in gardens two fences along, etc.

HereintheloveofChristIstand · 19/06/2025 23:18

I have to say I laughed out loud when I read this. And the trifle idea came to mind for me too.
I feel your frustration. I have a dog and would not let him bark and disturb people in the early hours.

AngryBookworm · 19/06/2025 23:14

This is hilarious, OP, and completely understandable. For a while when I was young our neighbours owned around ten Alsatians and kept them in their back garden in kennels. The noise! To this day I don't know how my mum wasn't arrested for murder (human or dog).

PyongyangKipperbang · 19/06/2025 23:07

My parents tell a story as gospel, that I am not convinced actually happened tbh, that involved another neighbour yelling at a dog owning male neighbour that they would tell his wife who he was shagging if he didnt shut the dog up. Dog was silenced, but wife was gone within the week!

😂😂

I wish I had the balls.
It worked anyway!

The cops will have a laugh at that one. You make their evening.

Trust me that would not make their evening in any way shape or form
not will they be laughing uproariously at this

I’m sure they won’t laugh at the idea of someone threatening to use a rifle

OneTC · 19/06/2025 23:03

We were out in the garden picking fruit and next doors dogs were going raggo in their back garden, one of them was digging at the fence so i went over to have a look and tell it to sort it's act out. Then the neighbour came and shouted at me for winding her dogs up, i explained they were being annoying and digging at the fence and she said she'd encourage them to keep on barking.

And there was me without my rifle

I don't understand people who just let their dogs bark outside. Can they not hear it?? Madness

I think there’s a difference between a dog reacting to something it’s heard and barking for 1/2 mins until their owner has managed to get off the toilet/out of bath/downstairs etc and get the dog back inside, and those selfish gits who just leave their dog outside to bark continuously.
We have a puppy who has just learnt how to bark and is currently discovering what is & isn’t his ‘kingdom’ to defend with his little woofs ie: he is barking whenever he hears another bark and any loud noises from the neighbour. HOWEVER I do not ignore it and he gets told no very firmly every time he does it and if that doesn’t stop him, he comes straight back in.

FloridaCat · 19/06/2025 23:00

Do you live in London @YourZanyFox ? Because I find the police helicopters and various sirens often drown out the sound of yapping.

BlazenWeights · 19/06/2025 23:00

Fluffywhitecat · 19/06/2025 21:54

You can't shout out of your window about rifles OP, it's kind of frowned upon.

By who?

tripleginandtonic · 19/06/2025 22:57

YourZanyFox · 19/06/2025 22:08

Maybe I should add that I have an autistic son who hits himself in the face when he gets distressed by loud noises

If yoy live in an expensive city I'd expect noise tbh. Threatening to use a rifle should result in a police visit.

I’ve lived next door to a yappy dog for over 10 years. It does test your patience. Last year, just as I was thinking I’d served my sentence, they decided to get a puppy. I now have yapping in stereo.

I think we have the same neighbour..
Fucking hate yappy dogs

Shesellsseashellsnotinmystreet · 19/06/2025 22:44

If this is ndn confession time I hosed my ndn's yappy fucker twice this week.
No guilt..

Didn't your ndn notice?

I have dogs either side of me. They bark. One was having a howl yesterday for a bit. It doesn't bother me for some reason. Better than the little git that used to play the drums very badly at all hours of the day. In a terraced house.

Vodkaandlemonade · 19/06/2025 22:53

Please come and shout to Teddy next door.

Vaxtable · 19/06/2025 22:50

Know how you feel. Last year a kid was screaming, full on tantrum and parents kept the kid in the garden! In the end I shouted out the window stop screaming

did the trick the6 took the kid indoors

uncomfortablydumb60 · 19/06/2025 22:48

Has the heat gone to your head? I get it
A courier stole my phone today!!

ChocolateCinderToffee · 19/06/2025 22:46

Does your neighbour own or rent, OP? I know someone whose dog yapped so much that neighbours complained to the council and her landlord said she had to give the dog away.

Martymcfly24 · 19/06/2025 22:42

Yanbu I understand your pain. After years of toddler early mornings ending my dd is now awake at 6:45 am every bloody morning due to the fucking dog next door being left out for a wee at that time and barking every morning repeatedly.

HelpMeGetThrough · 19/06/2025 22:42

I’m with you OP.

Twatty barking dogs and their equally twatty owners.
