is it acceptable to be religion phobic?

Not religious personally, i lump all moderate religions into a live and let live bucket. but the fundamentalist believers, be it westboro or hamas, i do find myself having a visceral and active dislike/distain for. and its mostly fundementalist islam that im aware due to the modern atrocities they have committed. is it bad to say im fundementalist islamaphobic for example?

And so does Christianity in a different way but no one complains about that in the same way.

Islam is also not a major threat in every country.

Edited

They are in every country they invade.
Can you tell me what atrocities are currently committed in the name of Christianity?

ShiningStar3 · 19/06/2025 16:49

Didn't mean to quote your OP, but oh well 😄

Aparecium · 19/06/2025 16:49

Some atheists come across as religionphobic. Those who mock believers, for example, or present them as idiots because of their belief.

No belief system should be completely immune to scrutiny.

KnittyNell · 19/06/2025 16:41

That is very true historically but Islam currently presents the major threat.
Have there been mass atrocities carried out by Sikhs, Buddhists and Hindus in modern history?

how is it inciting hatred? im not asking other people to hate these beliefs. im just saying I hate these beliefs. although shouldn't most sane people hate these beliefs?

All faiths are abhorrent when in the hands of zealots. Detecting extremists is fine. Detecting an entire faith based on what its fanatics do is not. I know too many Muslims to think like OP and I don't believe everything in the media.

I am an atheist, but not a fanatical one.

randomusername03 · 19/06/2025 16:42

maybe my question shouldve been is it islamaphobic to hate fundamentalist/extremists Islamics?

Same could be said about any mass religion.

Mass groups of people have committed atrocities in the name of religion with it being perfectly legal.

Anyone who loves history can tell you that.

That’s not an explanation though is it?

Can you tell us why so many atrocities are carried out in the name of your religion though?

How are they meant to know that? There are 2 billion Muslims in the world and they’re not all the same. You’ll get some that are fundamentalists and rigid, and you’ll get the ones who drink alcohol and are more relaxed.
There are issues of course but unless you research individual people and the path they were lead down, how is anyone meant to know?
You know just as well as everyone else that there are horrendous cases of mass killings, murders, abuse all over the world from every single background.

No, but you are certainly inciting hatred. Effectively making you no better than those you claim to hate.

How exactly?

SerendipityJane · 19/06/2025 16:37

One thing that can get on my pip just as much as religious zealots, are militant atheists. They can be just as bad at shoving their beliefs down other peoples throats. It does really make them seem insecure and afraid of catching god.

Am I religion phobic because I have zero time for organised religion of any hue, most of which are run by men and have a history or current practice of making women in their flock/congregation second class citizens? And worse.

I left the Catholic Church because of its treatment of women and the sexual abuse of children. No need to be phobic about it, just critically think it through. I have no respect either for those who continue to support any such religions that suppress women and do not respect their contribution to society.

randomusername03 · 19/06/2025 16:33

dont believe in supernatural, but I dont despise people who believe on moderate religions, like i said, live and let live. But there is one religion where the extremists (if intel sources are to be believed) are responsible for 70% of terrorist attacks. and the lesser extremists (if they can be called that) may not carry out terror attacks, but hold the most abhorrent views on women and children and actively commit crimes (or criminal in the UK at least) against those groups. and im finding myself less and less tolerant, or wanting to be tolerant of those. or maybe its less willing to not want to speak about it. im not sure. but there's already been a few insinuation on this thread that im islamaphobic for discussing it.

OP posts:
CoffeeCantata · 19/06/2025 16:26

I'm an atheist.

But I don't have a problem with other people's religious beliefs as long as they keep them to themselves. I know people of various religions and we manage very well not to bring the subject up. (Obviously I don't like criminals and terrorists - but I don't count those people as religious).

There's a saying 'When people stop believing in God, they start believing in all sorts of crazy things'. So ask yourself: do you believe in say, horoscopes? Zodiac signs? Ghosts? Karma? Or any other 'supernatural' things? If so, you can't criticise religious people.

I've met people who claim to despise religions but believe that crystals have powers, or that karma is an actual force, or that astrology is true.

Your post doesn’t make sense. If you were “religion phobic” you would be of the thought that all religion is bad, but you say yourself that you don’t mind the ‘conventional’ religions. If I understand correctly, you’re essentially saying that you don’t agree with extremism which then uses religion to justify criminal activity, in which case I’m sure (apart from the people that are involved) everyone would agree and you don’t need validation for that. Unless I have too much positive intent, and what you’re actually saying is that you hate one specific religion and you want to start a thread where people jump on the hate train.

This.

Persephoknee · 19/06/2025 16:21

I think British Christianity as a religion is active as a force of good, historically it has provided lots of housing, founded lots of charities, and schools. It’s benign, it’s liberal, it seeks to assist people without oppressing them. It’s unusually liberal and enlightened.
it’s the religions that operate as cults that people tend to distrust.

There are religious Nut-jobs off all denominations. Some of the awful acts of terror in the US have been done by Christians.

and id say that should that kind of extremism import itself to Britain, especially on the scale of fanatical islam, id be equally disgusted by that as well.

OP you started out with with your disdain for all extreme religions but instead of mentioning the flds or something else you mentioned islam a few times. FYI there are 2 billion muslims like myself who aren’t committing any crimes inflicting our views on anyone but to be repeatedly told we are fanatical is hardly finding peace or finding tranquility.

if you're not carrying out atrocities who is calling you fanatical? its certainly not me. or do you mean because there are moderate believers people shouldn't be allowed to discuss the fanatics for fear of upsetting the moderates, who most normal people see as a separate group?

It’s fine to have a negative view of religious extremists. In fact, it’s fine to have a negative view of religious moderates, if that’s your bag. I’m not sure it’s a phobia though, is it?

BruhWhy · 19/06/2025 16:00

Disliking someone because of their fanatical beliefs makes OP as bad as the nutters who want to murder and rape non-believers?

There is a point of view that if people kept their fanatical beliefs to themselves. them how would anyone know anything about them ?

I mean Barbara and Barry at No. 27 may well be kneeling down every evening and asking their particular sky fairy to smite down with great vengeance those that nicked their parking space that day.

But unless they actually announced it in public. then who would know. Or care ?

It's the pubic discourse bit we need to manage.

Dangermoo · 19/06/2025 16:08

BruhWhy · 19/06/2025 16:05

I rather dislike those people who threw bricks through mosque windows and rioted, after that horrible stabbing in Southport. I have a visceral reaction to them even. You could call me idiot-phobic.

Is that ok? Or is it just religious fanatics you're defending?

Is that a new religion?
