religion phobic

is it acceptable to be religion phobic?

Not religious personally, i lump all moderate religions into a live and let live bucket. but the fundamentalist believers, be it westboro or hamas, i do find myself having a visceral and active dislike/distain for. and its mostly fundementalist islam that im aware due to the modern atrocities they have committed. is it bad to say im fundementalist islamaphobic for example?

I saw a post that basically said “all religious wars and acts of terror are brought about by grown men, who believe their imaginary friend is better than the other grown men’s imaginary friends”.

No, but you are certainly inciting hatred. Effectively making you no better than those you claim to hate.

Would you say that if I was calling out some American Christians for being totally against abortion, or the Catholic Church’s mother’s homes where babies were murdered? Or is it just some religions which should be free from criticism no matter what.

Go read Project 2025.

Mmm
Well that’s not exactly acts of terrorism!

Myalim · 19/06/2025 17:28

All religions oppress women. As a feminist, why would I support that?

How does your hate manifest itself ?

Mild tutting ?

does hate have to manifest itself? isn't the feeling enough?

I understand what you’re trying to say, but I think the delivery needs some work before you raise this point in real life.

Extremism in all its religious guises is abhorrent.

Neither Christianity nor Islam are above reproach based on their historic actions. I don’t think any religion is, if you look hard enough.

what should I change about the delivery? people who I've discussed this with appear to understand what im saying and fall into two camps, they either agree or they try to shut down discussion with insinuations/accusations of islamaphobia.

If you consider the West as being Christian, then we have Afghanistan and Iraq recently, with deaths in the 900,000’s. They didn’t do this in name of Christianity of course but many atrocities perpetrated by those of a Muslim background weren’t doing it in the name of their religion either, although some were.

No culture/country/religion is untainted.

The missiles used in the US army have a psalm engraved on the side of them. It’s not shouted when it’s fired, but close enough.

No I have no idea what you’re referring to.
What terrorist acts have been carried out?

Violence is not just about terrorism.

I think British Christianity as a religion is active as a force of good, historically it has provided lots of housing, founded lots of charities, and schools. It’s benign, it’s liberal, it seeks to assist people without oppressing them. It’s unusually liberal and enlightened.
it’s the religions that operate as cults that people tend to distrust.

Hmmm I would say that Christianity has plenty of flaws. Look at the priests who turned out to be peadophiles, grooming young boys. Their laws on abortion and basically making it impossible for women, thinking of Ireland and now the US with their laws.

I would also argue whilst there is benefit to the wider society, through charity work and humanitarian assistance, it’s not always altruism. They do good in the hope to get something out of it (a place in heaven)

I don’t think religion has any business in politics and should never be something on which laws are based. The barbaric way some religions view women, who have zero rights is appalling.

That is very true historically but Islam currently presents the major threat.
Have there been mass atrocities carried out by Sikhs, Buddhists and Hindus in modern history?

One thing that can get on my pip just as much as religious zealots, are militant atheists. They can be just as bad at shoving their beliefs down other peoples throats. It does really make them seem insecure and afraid of catching god.

Completely agree with you. They turn atheism into a religion, which is SO missing the point.

I have no idea what’s going on in the States regarding Christian atrocities currently, can you fill me in?

I dislike anyone / any belief system where people think their religion should bind others.

So feel free to practice your religion yourself but don’t try to force others to. Whether that’s a whole country, the world, or just your own family.

The Catholics and Protestants have only just stopped murdering each other in Northern Ireland.

They’re all based on fairy tales.
Mocking Christianity is less likely to get you killed though.

randomusername03 · 19/06/2025 16:12

im saying I hate all extremism religion and for the most part the people who carry it out. all of them. but im in the uk and there's not many christian/jewish/Mormon etc extremism being carried out that im aware of, or makes me wary. islam, and I mean the fundamentalist kind, are the only ones I've ever had the misfortunate to be in close proximity to.

There may not be much Christian extremism carried out now, but you don't have to go far back to look at the crimes carried out due to beliefs.

The 800 baby bodies found at the former Catholic unmarried mother institution that were buried in a disused sewage tank?!?

Christianity has come a long way, and hopefully other religions which treat people badly if you do not fit with their rules will also change over time.

Because Catholics are far more tolerant now in their views, you are much less likely to get Catholic extremists. Hopefully Islam will one day be the same.

Lioncub2020 · 19/06/2025 16:55

I'm with you. There is enough science now that anyone who believes in the various sky fairies must know that hey are deluding themselves. Some much evil happens in the name of gods. At the least the state no longer burns people at the stake for not following the right version of a religion.
