To change my name from Elizabeth

God I just hate it. It sounds like lizard. It's a Christian name meaning "loved by god" and I'm a staunch atheist. It was the Queens name and I'm firmly anti royal. It was my maternal grandmothers name and she was abusive to my mum, who, in turn, has passed that trauma and abuse onto me to the point where we are no contact. Ive always been called Lisa but I don't like that much either.

I've been going by Lis, pronounced "Liss" but what can I move to? Urgh.

I love Calista! Mediterranean

if I met someone called ‘Liss’ I’d think it was short for Alicia - do you like that name?

IdLikeABackMassage · 19/06/2025 10:09

Do it OP!

I changed my first and last name at age 49, also as part of recovery from an abusive childhood. I wanted to rid myself of the cruel labels that had been attached to it.

I was shy to tell people but everyone's been great! (only a very few people know the real reason though)

I went with a name I've always liked from a book I love.

Todayisaday · 19/06/2025 10:08

Complete change, I know someone eho had a very boring traditional name and changed it by depol. Names changed but it was like, Victoria changed to Electra. Everyone just accepted it and thats her name now!

Goditsmemargaret · 19/06/2025 10:08

Betty

I know someone called Elaine who hates her name. She goes by Elly. You could do similar.

I like the name Elizabeth myself but it's really up to you, it's your name :)

I do too i wonder if it's the same one 🤔

Topaz89 · 19/06/2025 10:04

I love your name OP. My 6 year old DD is an Elizabeth too ❤️. We usually call her by her full name but her nicknames are Betty and Lizzie-loo.
If you don’t like it of course you can change it to absolutely anything you want.

Possibly at 18, 19, 20 but now I am well into my forties I would feel an idiot suddenly announcing that I want to be called Sarah or something.

I'm the same. If I moved out of the area several miles away, then I would probably do it but otherwise I'm stuck with the damn name as its what I'm known as.

Your dad named you for a joke? Did he realise he was going to be raising an entire person or did he think a grown up would step in and issue a sensible name after 6 weeks?
I can't think of many jokes which get funnier with every passing decade.
You can change your name as an adult. It works fine. Occasionally people talk about the past and use the name the person had then, but they can use your new name now and on the future.

Elise?

GoodQueenBess · 19/06/2025 09:55

I feel the same about my name but can't think of a name that is 'me.'

For things like SM (e.g. Nextdoor), I use a boring age-appropriate no-nonsense pseudonym (e.g. something like Amy Smith)

@poppymango , or the Spanish variant - Isabella. The Spanish variant ids Isabel.

Cuppa2sugars · 19/06/2025 09:54

Nobody has mentioned Bessy,.

all the Elizabeth’s at my school were called Bessy. I preferred it .Or Lizzy is nice.

aredcar · 19/06/2025 09:53

im also not a fan of liz but love Elizabeth

would you like it if it was spelt Elisabeth? I love that spelling. And it works with the nickname Liss

other Liss names I like:
Alyssa, Alicia (a-Liss-ee-ah), Ellis/Elis, Alice, Liesl, Melissa, Elsie,

My nan was always called Lilly. I never knew her birth name was Elizabeth, until i was much older, as everyone always called her Lilly, which really suited her 💐
Edited to say, my aunty's Betty was the same. I thought her name was Betty, until I was older.
Lilly and Betty are both nice names.
Or have you got a middle name?
Some men in our family were always called by their middle names instead of their first name?

Savannah.

RoseBakery · 19/06/2025 09:51

I think Elizabeth is absolutely beautiful, a classic European name. But if you dislike it I think Ella or Lily are good nicknames.

CeraUnaVolta · 19/06/2025 09:49

I changed my name in my 30s. I thought it would be difficult but it wasn’t - easy to literally change and everyone I know made the effort to use my new name. Occasionally got called my previous name by mistake when people forgot, but 20 years on my previous name is a distant memory and when I hear it spoken I don’t feel any connection to it.
I always hated my name growing up, to the point that I felt embarrassed introducing myself.
I’d say, find a name you love and use it privately for a while until you feel comfortable yourself with it, then do things like set up an email address, change it on social media, use it with friends until it feels like “your name”, and then change it officially.

Sahara123 · 19/06/2025 09:49

My grandmother was Elizabeth but was known as Peggy, now there’s an unusual one for you !

Menobaby79 · 19/06/2025 09:48

awkwardasfuck · 19/06/2025 08:49

Oh no!!! Bit like Sarah ... beautiful name but guaranteed to sound like a spice girl

Where's emma? Emma B, emma P or Emma K? 😅

Haha it was exactly that. The teacher used to have to call us Emma D, Emma C, Emma R, etc. I hated it. My best friend's name was Julianna. She really hated her name but I thought it was so exotic and individual as nobody else had that name.

Mulledjuice · 19/06/2025 09:47

Do you no longer wish to be known as Lis/Liss?
Would you prefer something similar?
I've known a couple of Felicitys who are known as Fliss

AnneMarieW · 19/06/2025 09:46

First off, you can obviously change your name to whatever you want if you don’t like the sound of your name or it has traumatic associations for you due to your Mum or Gran,

But the late Queen? C’mon 🤣 I’m not a Royalist either (or religious so I don’t care about the supposed meaning) - but the reason many people choose Elizabeth is that it is so timeless that there have been hundreds of amazing historical Elizabeth’s! I personally think of women like Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Elizabeth Gaskell, Elizabeth Fry, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Elizabeth Blackwell… and those were just the ones that instantly sprang to mind. I’d have a Google to associate your name with the ones that resonate with you.

And the amazing nicknames! My favourites are Elza, Bizzy, Lizbeth, Effie, Buffy and Bess. But there’s just so many… Imo your family may have done you wrong in other ways but not with the name they chose for you (and no, I don’t have a DD called Elizabeth so have no skin in the game). I personally think it would be easier to choose one of the great nicknames rather than changing it, but obviously up to you.

Youlikepotatoesyes · 19/06/2025 09:46

I’d keep the name and go full Betty.

Hoolahoophop · 19/06/2025 09:45

Verity - I love Verity, not enough of them in the world.

or

Boudica - because the queen of the Iceni rocked.

MaraB77 · 19/06/2025 09:45

If I changed my name I'd go for the name of a woman I admired from history, like Emmeline Pankhurst or in your case you might choose someone from your own cultural heritage.

CyberStrider · 19/06/2025 08:57

I was just going to say it sounds like you just be my age then clocked the 79 on your username. 😊

Claire, Emma, Rebecca, Sarah covered most of the girls in my class - middle name Louise!

Yeah I'm 45. Emma must've been a
popular name when I was born. Can't think why, to be honest. Yep Louise is the middle name too. 😏 I've considered dropping the Emma and just being Louise but I'm too long in the tooth now haha.
