My PT is annoyed I haven't given notice...

But, I pay in blocks. I've come to the end of a block and I'm just not renewing until Sept. (Or ever now).

I can't see how I have to give notice? I don't have a contract?

Thinking he's not for me, he pulls me up on cancelling short notice when my children are ill despite the fact I've already paid for the session. I think he expects to be able to fill the slot and get double bubble.

What a shame, we get on fine etc but this all leaves a very bad taste.

I would text around 7am, session not until 9:15am

I'd certainly have to pay if I gave that kind of notice, whatever the reason was.

I would still expect to pay in this scenario tbh though

He should be grateful that he gets paid without having to do anything if you cancel a session!

Exactly. I've never expected to rearrange or anything

You've done nothing wrong - that's how blocks work, ideally you'd have both communicated your plans a bit better but it was on them to ask you your plans to continue.

Can I just say, I hate the pricing structures PTs seem to use. I used to pay mine in blocks, then she strong-armed me into paying monthly. Monthly was the cost of 4 sessions and because there are 4.35 weeks in a month she said this included her holiday time. Which was a bit vague but OK, we met on a Thursday and there are 3 months this year with 5 Thursdays instead of 4. But she'd just take a day off whenever she felt like it with no keeping score. I gave up after the third month in 6 months where I'd paid for 4 sessions but only had 2. Aaargh! Just either a) charge per session b) make the monthly cost a more accurate 4.35 x weekly session price, and c) say how many weeks holiday you will be taking over the year.

I'm gonna go against the flood here but when you say you cancelled last minute when your kids were sick do you mean an hour or 2 before or 5 minute before (when he woud have already gone to the gym for you f not there yet).

And if you knew you were not gonna need him after your block alwas over, the nice and rescpectful thing would have been to let him know so he could plan accordingly.

There are 2 sides to each story. He is either very demanding and rude or you have a tendency to be selfish and he was done with it...

From the title, i thought this was a teacher resignation thread, as in Scotland PT= Principal Teacher = Head of Department.

As it is, your PT is an annoyingly entitled man - he feels entitled to your money and entitled to tell you what to do. You're not obliged to respond to him at all but there's a good suggestion upthread if you do.

I'd be tempted to reply to his message with a simple "piss off" but I'm aware that's not very mature of me.

Cosyblankets · 18/06/2025 12:31

I have people who pay me in blocks. I let them know when we're getting to the end of a block and check if they're continuing.

I think PTs like to know in advance, to give them time to find another client. You're not obliged to do this, but as most of them work to very tight budgets, I would always try to let my PT know that I wasn't renewing for a further block as soon as I knew.

He's annoyed. He should probably try not show this, but I can understand his annoyance. He may have turned down clients because he assumed you would be coninuing. It would have been considerate to have told him sooner.

I'm not sure what I should reply. Maybe just reply nothing

yup. I'd not renew either. I have worked with all kinds of PT's for over 40 years (ex NHS) and some do have a very bossy attitude to their patients....sort of my way or the highway. When i started in practice, it was expected and honestly they were in general, a nasty domineering bunch. more recently they have definitely become more human but it sounds like you got a throwback.....throw him back!
edit oh professional trainer! well my comments about physios still stand!! but yeah I have heard this about trainers too....that they feel they should be bullies.

Personal trainer.

Ah, thank you.

Sweetleftfood · 18/06/2025 12:13

He should have sent you a polite message to check if you are continuing and if so please pay by XX date. You have done nothing wrong

nodramaplz · 18/06/2025 12:10

He’s a control freak

Mrsbloggz · 18/06/2025 12:08

Any self-employed person is going to be pissed off if money stops coming in, but it's very unprofessional and stupid to attack the source of the money!

Just say "i dont think we are a good fit. My expectation of booking in blocks, without a contract is that I dont need to give notice. I think I need someone with a little more understanding about committments to children ie summer holidays while you perhaps need someone who has a lot of free time."

This is a good message

I only wanted to take 8 weeks off which is about £320.

I recently asked him to PT my husband, and he didn't have space. He didn't seem over bothered about it either.
I think we've just come to the end of the line.

God, I'm glad my PT isn't like some of these! I've cancelled/asked to rearrange on the same day (as had he, in fact him probably more so) and we just agree a new day/time and I meet him then instead. I've never had to pay when I couldn't make a session 😮

I'm also a PT fanatic now and think of it as an ongoing (expensive) monthly expense. I only signed up for a 12 week block and have been there nearly 3 years now...

TorroFerney · 18/06/2025 11:58

Definitelyrandom · 18/06/2025 11:15

You do have a contract with him - it's just that all the terms are implied other than (presumably) making payments in a block. He might well argue that it was an implied term that you gave him reasonable notice of non renewal. In any event it does seem a bit rude/unhelpful on your part not to give some notice for the reasons suggested earlier.

I suspect he will not have any idea what an implied term is given his communication challenges. How many people will op tell who will now think I’m not using him. Short sighted on his part and complacent . He should have asked her.

I mean, if you got along with him, you would have told him you're taking a break for the summer. But if you don't like him, you're right to keep quiet.

Used to get on great, but I can't put my finger on it lately the 'vibes have been off'

What is exactly did he say to you when you told him you were having a break?

Fine to have a break but next time I should give him notice because it's bad for his business

🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤣 oh gosh sorry I misunderstood completely. Not sure why you need to be rude. It obviously wasn't that clear to me.
I misunderstood. Sorry op. X

Edited

I don’t think I was rude. I pointed out it was clear from the thread which talks about gyms. Sorry if it came across as rude.
