People who ring repeatedly when you don’t answer

Aibu to think that people who ring you over and over again when you don’t answer are rude, attention seeking and a bit weird? Unless of course it’s an emergency.

If I don’t answer the first call, what makes them think I’m going to answer the 2nd 3rd or 10th time?

Sometimes I’m having a shower or my phone is in another room on charge and I’ll go to it and there’ll be 20 missed calls. Or I might be at work. Any number of reasons why I can’t answer.

It’s a certain few people who do this.

Mobile phones have missed call notifications, so it’s obvious that someone will ring back when they can.

(From your OP)

Well, it isn't.
If there is one call, and no message left, I wouldn't call back.

I would assume that either they were going to try someone else for the answer, or favour, or a chat, or whatever they wanted, or that it was even a bum dial. Therefore I wouldn't call them back.

I don't disagree with you that it is ridiculous to call 10 or 20 times in a row if it isn't some dire emergency.
I also agree with those saying it will end in a "Little boy who cried wolf" scenario if there ever were an emergency. You'd like to hope this could be explained to them, but I suspect if they think phoning over and over (when not an emergency) is okay, they probably wouldn't listen.

Absolutely 💅

Ah I see. You’re trolling us. I did think this was a bit unbelievable.

You are quite right, you seem beyond help. You clearly believe that your mental health challenges are more important than everyone else’s.

Absolutely 💅

I think its hilarious that people on here think they can fix me when 20 years of psychiatrists, psychologists, counsellors, gps, cpns etc etc can't

No driving you can answer the phone I was replying to someone who said what if their listening to an audio book or enjoying the silence which I wrongly assumed they meant at home I now realise they meant in the car.

You were replying to my list of reasons as to why someone might not answer the phone while driving and your solution is…. They can just answer the phone. Wow. So you really do expect everyone you know to be contactable to you at all hours of the day, whenever you see fit?

Hallywally · 15/06/2025 21:58

People hark back to the days of landlines and I grew up with them but the difference then was that we weren’t contactable all the time. If you were out/at work/driving etc people just couldn’t get hold of you. Also if you were sleeping/didn’t hear the phone/were hoovering or even in a different part of the house and don’t get to the phone in time, you just didn’t get the call. I don’t remember anyone ringing us repeatedly again and again.

Yes exactly what I said earlier Smile

Why would someone not be able to answer when driving. I don't know anyone who can't answer their phone through their car

Because they are concentrating on driving.

Because they have had a shitty day at work, dealing with shitty annoying colleagues so have put 80s metal on full blast and are enjoying a few minutes singing along and expunging the shitty day.

Because they just don’t want to talk to you right in that exact moment and have the right to choose how they spend their time.

Because they are in the car with other people and having a conversation with them so don’t want to be interrupted.

While driving?!!!

Do you expect them to immediately pull over on to the hard shoulder to send you a text to say they’re busy?!!

That would be unfortunate

"Unfortunate"?????

Your neediness causing the deaths of people would be "unfortunate"?

But its quicker and less distracting to just send a msg saying im busy.

You can’t send a message when someone rings you over and over again.

Why should I anyway? If I don’t answer the first time or ring back within a few seconds then quite clearly I’m busy 🙄

What is to be achieved by ringing over and over and over again?

So many people feel utterly entitled to other people’s time!

I have absolutely no idea how to link my iPhone to my car despite reading the manual and googling it. It’s a total mystery to me - I have tried but gave up - one of those techy things I know is possible but is unobtainable for me ( and there are so many of these with all gadgets doing 1000s of things I don’t need)

Chocolatesplease · 15/06/2025 22:07

I can’t answer my phone through my car.

I use my phone as a satnav. If someone starts ringing me then the satnav doesn’t work and I have to touch the phone to either cut them off or answer.

Why the heck should I answer my phone when I’m driving? Why shouldn’t the caller just wait until a convenient time for us both.

This absolute rudeness of not answering your phone is contemptible. Same with not answering the door.

🤣

But it’s not just about not being able to answer…. Maybe they just won’t want to answer! Maybe they are at a juicy part of an audiobook, or halfway through a decent tune or what if they’re enjoying the silence? What if they’re trying to listen to the satnav or they’re having an in depth chat with another passenger in the car or what if they’ve got terrible wind and have been merrily farting the whole journey but don’t want you to hear it? What if they’re already on the phone to someone else? What if they’re feeling overwhelmed with their own mental health and went for a drive to clear their head? Or a whole host of other reasons? Do you really think that you’re incessant need to check they’re not dead should more important than whatever they’ve got going on?

But its quicker and less distracting to just send a msg saying im busy.

There are plenty of times it’s distracting or dangerous to answer a phone while driving. Here’s a thought; how would you feel if it transpired that your incessant calls to someone driving had resulted in a momentary lapse of concentration and a pile up on a motorway, with casualties and deaths?

That would be unfortunate

feelingbleh · 15/06/2025 22:02

Tryingtokeepgoing · 15/06/2025 21:48

For most (all) of those things my ‘phone would either not be with me but in another room, or on silent. So no message would be sent. As posted above, a phone is for the convenience of the owner of it, and there should be no expectation of an answer, let alone an immediate one. Sure, if it’s with me and convenient to answer I will, but otherwise I will be in touch when it’s convenient for me. And please, don’t then send a string of voice notes. I never listen to voice notes that are more than 10 seconds long 🤣🤣

Yeah we could never be friends it wouldn't work 🤣🤣

@Chocolatesplease My elderly Dad does this. Why he doesn’t just leave me a message I don’t understand.

He’s well into his 80’s though and I think he’s forgotten that some of us still work. 🤣

My Dad does this too, I feel like my phone needs to be in my hand ready to answer whatever I'm doing, whether In in the shower, on the loo, driving, just sat down...but...he is in his 80's and probably panics if he can't get hold of me
