What is wrong with Granny?

Both my grannies were Granny.
My mother was Granny.
My sister has chosen Nana, why?
Is this an indication of how far we are plummeting towards the bottom?

I'm 35 and I have a granny and my lovely nanny died last year. My children have a granny (OH mum) and my mum is nanny. We asked them both when I was pregnant with our first what they wanted to be called, so I find it odd your sister is requesting baby calls your mum that, surely it's up to your mum lol

**Edited because I read your post wrong, I don't see any issue whatsoever with your sister wanting to be called nana.

hazelowens · 14/06/2025 20:53

I had 2 Granny's one was Granny Anderson the other was granny French. My boys had a granny and a Nana I hate the word Nana but she had older grandkids who called her Nana so I grinned and bared it.

LetsGoGiants · 14/06/2025 20:52

Grandparents/Great grandparents on Dads side were Nanny/Grandad

On Mums side it was Granny/Grandpa

So it was easy for us to differentiate, but no idea if that was intentional or not.

My Granny always said she didn’t want to be a Nanny because she wasn’t a goat 😂

MyIvyGrows · 14/06/2025 20:51

Mine were both Nana Surname but we all lived in the same town and I saw them frequently. My mum is just Nana to DS but he sees her a lot more than DH’s mum, who is Nana Surname.

Both Grandma and Granny sound terribly posh to me but I’m northern so

honeylulu · 14/06/2025 20:51

It's up to the grandmother what she prefers. I hate to say it but I think it's at least partly classist.

Grandmother/Grandmama - posh
Granny - fairly posh
Grandma - average
Nana/Nan/Nanny (unless the employee kind) - working class

We called both grandmothers Grandma. My mum (snobby but not properly posh) originally wanted the same but when she found out MIL was Granny she decided she wanted to be called Granny too.

Viviennemary · 14/06/2025 20:49

I think nana is frightfully common. Granny or Grandma.

😆

OK Hyacinth.

Thepeopleversuswork · 14/06/2025 20:49

Why on earth is "Nana" a race to the bottom? Is this is a snob factor thing?

Viviennemary · 14/06/2025 20:49

fudgesmummy · 14/06/2025 20:49

I’m Granny to our 3 lovely grandchildren.
Our 2 grandsons don’t have grandparents on their daddy’s side.
Our granddaughter has a Nana as well ❤️
I’m Granny after the Dowager Countess of Grantham in Downton Abbey 😃

BIossomtoes · 14/06/2025 20:49

I’m Granny, just like my mum and her mum. I love it.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 14/06/2025 20:48

My mum was "grandma" and so was her mum. I probably will be too. My dad's mum was also "grandma" to me. Dh's mum was a known as a name for grandma from her own culture.

I think people should use whatever name they like. It's just a name. Who gives a toss if "nana" is associated with working class families...I am sure that working class people love their grannies as much as anyone else!

Zanatdy · 14/06/2025 20:47

You choose what you prefer, why is one lower class than another? Get a grip.

Fiver555 · 14/06/2025 20:47

When we suggested to my mother that she be called Nanny, she said she wasn't a goat.🙄So Granny it is.

Livelovebehappy · 14/06/2025 20:42

Another one not sure of why being a nana is a bad thing??

I think there's a vague tradition of "nana" being a working class marker (although PP have already suggested it isn't as tidy as that and it may have been more strongly in operation a few decades ago). I do know my very proper schoolteacher grandmother would have probably disowned me and my sister if we'd dared address her as "nana" rather than "granny."
But of course both Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg are seriously wondrous ladies.

Supporthelittleguys · 14/06/2025 20:45

Im working class and all the grandparents are nan/grandad. I always saw grandma/grandpa as a middle class thing, usually because grandparents tend to be older. No idea 🤷🏼‍♀️ maybe that’s why she prefers nana, imo nan sounds like a young grandparent and grandma more like the nans mum! So a great grandparent…

SigourneyWeaversVest · 14/06/2025 20:19

Mine was Grandmother Featherstonehaugh.

Nana is lovely.

Pronounced Fanshaw? Of the family who owned Uppark?

Puddlewoman · 14/06/2025 20:43

I had a nanny on my mothers side and a grandma we were encouraged not to like. My dc have one nana all others were dead long ago so no double name issues here. I couldnt be a granny theres something crone like about the word. It gives tight grey perm and itchy woolen skirt vibes

steff13 · 14/06/2025 20:41

Both of my grandmothers were "Grandma + surname." My great-grandmother was Granny, so in my mind "Granny" only applies to a much older woman (Granny was 96 when she died).

To my children, my mother-in-law is "Grandma+first name," and my ex-husband's stepmother is "Nana."

Nana is typical for the north east of England. Nowt wrong with it at all. It has a warmth about it.

Growlybear83 · 14/06/2025 20:40

Surely it’s the grandparent concerned who decides what they want to be called? I checked with both of our mothers what they wanted to be called when our daughter was born. They both felt very strongly that they wanted to be known as grandma, rather than granny, nanny, or nana.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 14/06/2025 20:32

What’s wrong with Nana? I always had a Nan and my dd two nanas. Why is it plummeting towards the bottom?!

There's nothing wrong with it at all. Just the OP trying to be superior but actually coming across as an arsehole

NeedyTiger · 14/06/2025 20:38

I'm 45 with 3 DGC and when my first was on her way I told my daughter I wanted to be known by granny she looked at me in shock haha , but mum you're too young to be a granny ? Errr you made me a granny silly 😜 but as it is my granddaughter called me debera to start with not even my name then went on to Nani now the other 2 have followed suit so i never got my wish of being called granny 😆

Blobbitymacblob · 14/06/2025 20:36

Makes me think of Granny Weatherwax who is exactly what I’d like to be when I grow up.

Brainstorm23 · 14/06/2025 20:36

My grandparents were Nanny X and Nanny Y where X and Y were surnames.

My mum is granny and the other grandparents are Nani and Nanu (Indian)..

I'm in NI and I think Nanny is quite common.
