To be furious about inevitable menopause

I don't have it yet, 43, feel on top of the flipping world professionally and emotionally (that hollow dragging anxiety of youth is all gone).

But I know that any bloody moment now the brain fog and anxiety and insomnia and prolapse will come for me and ruin it.

I'm so damn angry.

Also, does anyone know if I could just start taking the contraceptive pill now and maybe stay on it for a decade and come out the other side without any of the symptoms?

I started experiencing the horrendous tiredness and my periods started getting shorter and lighter, so I started on HRT patches about three years ago. The tiredness sorted itself out and I haven't really had any other symptoms.
It's not necessarily going to be terrible for every woman.

I already have this and have since my late 30s.😥

Furious about getting old? That sounds good for your health. And the menopause is the cessation of menstruation, it doesn't mean you are ill or disabled any more than starting your periods did. You managed that when you were about 12, so I think you will be okay with this.

The contraceptive pill isn't HRT so not sure why you would do that? Unless you need it for contraception, you want HRT as it's lower doses and more bio identical to natural hormones.

Being angry (or scared) will only make it worse for you because your mind will amplify every possible twinge as a sign. Be accepting of the natural cycle and curious about the next chapter of your life and you might well have an easier time of it.

Oh, and think of the savings on your heating bills 😉

You're furious about something you're not experiencing and may not even experience? That's a bit bonkers really isn't it?

mynameiscalypso · 14/06/2025 17:12

I’m a similar age and I’m the youngest of my friendship group; nobody is struggling particularly. At work, I’m surrounded by inspiring women in their 40s/50s/60s who are doing really fantastic things. Apart from having irregular periods, my mum sailed through the menopause (and did her PhD during the same time). It’s not inevitable!

DramaAlpaca · 14/06/2025 17:12

I hate to say this, but that anger and fury you're feeling might be the start of it.

Seriously, it might not be too bad at all, and if it is then assuming you have no contraindications, HRT is the way to go. It's wonderful stuff.

honeyandbutterontoast · 14/06/2025 17:12

I took the pill from age 40 to age 50 because a dr told me I would be through the menopause by then, so have no menopause issues.
What actually happened was I stopped taking the pill and my hormones fell off a cliff. Started hrt 6 months later.
In hindsight it would have been better to have a gradual decline I think.

PearlCity · 14/06/2025 17:11

I started taking HRT as a preventative/protective measure last year when I turned 50. I had no signs of menopause and definitely none of the symptoms you mention. I feel great and hope that the HRT keeps me feeling this way.

Not everyone experiences negative or severe symptoms. No point worrying or getting angry – but be aware and get on with your life.

stillavid · 14/06/2025 17:08

I have had no menopausal symptoms really - it doesn't have to be that bad.
