To wonder why lots of car drivers shout at pedestrians?

just wondered why car drivers scream at people out of their windows? There must be some people on here that do it since it seems a common thing. I was crossing the road today and put my hand up as a thank you gesture but when I got across they screamed out the window “thank you!” I mean I thought I did thank them as putting your hand up is an acceptable thank you gesture or so I thought, are we meant to verbally shout thank you? That seems a bit odd really so anyway there must be people on here that shout out their car window at people so why do you do it? Is it to make
people silly or because you have a car so can quickly speed off?

where I live they barely stop even if your nearly half way across and will be close enough to slap your bottom let alone stop if you are just stood waiting.

Only one of us needs permission to be on the road there and it’s not the pedestrian.

If you want to not drive carefully enough and hit me legally crossing a crossing, well that’s on you my children can enjoy the insurance payout.

most people see someone approaching a crossing and stop for them but equally the pedestrians should be aware of the car and wait till it’s safe to cross

Where did I say I don’t stop for pedestrians waiting to cross or that I’d plough straight through you in my car?

If you’re stood on the pavement waiting for a car to stop then they kind of are doing you a favour because at that point they don’t have to stop. Only when you’re on the pavement they have to follow the Highway Code and stop.
The traffic light isn’t comparable because a pedestrian only has right of way once they’re on the crossing

Then either they can stop of their own accord or I can put one foot on the road and they have to bring themselves to a juddering halt. They are definitely not doing me any favours by avoiding having to brake like that.

Some drivers really do think they own the roads.

No, I don't think so. They're not doing me a favour when I cross at a zebra crossing, are they? They are simply obeying the Highway Code, as required. Do drivers thank other drivers when they stop at a red traffic light as they are legally required to do and le other drivers, who have right of way, proceed?

Never seen it. Don’t believe it’s a thing.

Yes there is a hazard part on the test which everyone who drives has taken yet we still have accidents. So do we just walk out infront of oncoming cars at a crossing and think it’s ok to do this they’ve taken a hazard perception test? Or should we approach the crossing wait til the cars have stopped and then cross when it’s safe to do so?

Correct cars don’t have to legally stop until the pedestrian is on the crossing however most people see someone approaching a crossing and stop for them but equally the pedestrians should be aware of the car and wait till it’s safe to cross

Crossers at a pedestrian crossing have right of way, then cyclists and public transport. No one needs to drive unless disabled or moving furniture etc. Cars behave as if they own the road too often

If your stood on the pavement waiting isn’t it just polite to give a smile or a thanks? Whilst your on that pavement they could pass you all day long they don’t have to stop, they stop out of courtesy. It’s only once your on the road they legally have to stop

I walk a lot and have never been shouted at by a driver. I’ve never shouted at a pedestrian while I’ve been driving. I’ve never seen anyone shout at a pedestrian while driving.

Butchyrestingface · 13/06/2025 20:51

I certainly don't thank car drivers for obeying the law and not murdering me on the road.

Finally it isn’t just me making it up hey!

A poster above already gave their encounter and confirmed drivers shout at pedestrians in certain circumstances and why, which answered your question but because you didn’t like what they were saying you dismissed it (you obviously thought they were implying you walked out into the road)

Butchyrestingface · 13/06/2025 20:51

Findmeaplant343 · 13/06/2025 19:27

You don't even really have to say thank you. They're just following the highway code by stopping at a zebra crossing not doing you a favour.

I mean isn’t what the hazard part of the test is for. Your coming up to a an area with a zebra crossing there are people near by. You should be alert and prepared to stop.

Considering if I am remembering correct there is technically no legal requirement for the car to stop till the pedestrian is on the crossing though they should stop for people waiting to cross but must stop once the pedestrian is on the crossing.

Hubblebubble · 13/06/2025 20:21

Although in the case of the pedestrian I shouted at, i hope they were shaken up by the realisation they could've been squashed!

Hubblebubble · 13/06/2025 20:20

@StripesSpot But you were asking why drivers shout at pedestrians and I told you why I did. You can't ask people to share their experiences and then get cross when they do! I hope you feel better soon. It can really shake you up to be shouted at by a stranger.

I been shouted at a couple of times by drivers. The worst one was when I was walking down the street on the pavement and he was reversing his car off the driveway, he nearly hit me, then bounced out of his car and shouted that it was my fault for wearing dark clothes.

Finally it isn’t just me making it up hey!

@Zimunya Thank you! I'm not sure why the OP got so cross there.

Because it’s very boring repeating over and over that I did not step out in the middle of the road.

Did you stop at the crossing and wait until the car stopped then use the crossing?

I don’t ever shout at anyone but it does annoy me when people just walk straight out because there’s a crossing, yes there’s a crossing but there’s also a car travelling at 30mph and needs time to stop safely

StripesSpot · 13/06/2025 20:05

I’ve repeatedly said I crossed at a designated crossing it’s getting a bit repetitive, of course people running into traffic will get shouted at but that’s not what happened here, it was the apparent lack of thank you we are talking about.

Presumably you mean “irrelevant” not “irreverent” as @Hubblebubble has no requirement whatsoever to show you reverence. You’re not God.

Also, the title of your thread is, “To wonder why lots of car drivers shout at pedestrians”. @Hubblebubble posted an example of why she had done exactly this, and you thought she should start another thread. Why? She answering the exact question that was asked in this thread.

Ever heard of autocorrect?

Irreverent but please feel free to start a thread about people who just walk into busy main roads

Toilichte · 13/06/2025 19:42

I walk most places, and I don’t think as a pedestrian I’ve ever been shouted at beyond nice tits love

StripesSpot · 13/06/2025 19:37

Yes the car stopped, it’s a 20 mile road so no one should be going at 30 then plenty of time to stop which car did stop, this thread is about the apparent lack of “thanks” that was the issue

RitaFromThePitCanteen · 13/06/2025 19:36

I think people like that would shout at everyone if they could, but they feel emboldened to shout at you when they're safely ensconced in their little metal box and you aren't. Cowards, basically.
