To wonder why lots of car drivers shout at pedestrians?

just wondered why car drivers scream at people out of their windows? There must be some people on here that do it since it seems a common thing. I was crossing the road today and put my hand up as a thank you gesture but when I got across they screamed out the window “thank you!” I mean I thought I did thank them as putting your hand up is an acceptable thank you gesture or so I thought, are we meant to verbally shout thank you? That seems a bit odd really so anyway there must be people on here that shout out their car window at people so why do you do it? Is it to make
people silly or because you have a car so can quickly speed off?

The only time in recent memory that I’ve shouted at a pedestrian was to tell him that he dropped some of his shopping in the middle of the zebra crossing and had just kept on walking. I had literally shouted “excuse me sir, but you just dropped your shopping.”

He told me to F off. 😂 I hope he got home and had a miserable lunch because his salad and sharing packet of fancy crisps got mushed in the middle of the road.

Irreverent but please feel free to start a thread about people who just walk into busy main roads

Well, that was unnecessarily rude, wasn't it?

phoenixrosehere · 14/06/2025 18:12

Not shouted at but gestured to go and me refusing to and them having an issue where I live because they don’t have the same field of vision or knowledge of the area as I do.

Too many drivers think they know more than pedestrians when it comes to walking and don’t realise they can be putting us in danger because they don’t have the full picture of risks if you step out when they say. Many assume other drivers will stop on the other side, but many don’t. Add in people who don’t cut down their hedges making it difficult for pedestrians and drivers to see each other, it’s asking for someone (the pedestrian) to get hurt.

I don’t trust drivers whatsoever. I’ve had too many close calls from drivers not paying attention and breaking laws and if I hadn’t been the one paying attention I and my child would have been seriously injured or worse.
It’s usually people running red lights and had some guy in a white van who decided to do a u-turn with no thought to the pedestrians who have the green man and were crossing.

I always make sure cars are stopping, but surely you have enough time to be able to stop safely when you see someone waiting to cross? It winds me up the amount of drivers who are going so fast and/or haven't even checked to see if anyone's waiting to cross, so they have to slam on the breaks to skid to a halt, or just speed on over the crossing.

As a driver I always slow down approaching a crossing because some pedestrians are unpredictable and don’t wait and will jump out last second, so I always slow down on approach. As a pedestrian I will always wait till the cars have fully stopped before stepping out on to the road

I think you are missing the point here. You are driving along a road with a known hazard. It is YOUR responsibility to drive at a speed that ensured YOU have enough time to stop.

If you don't have enough time to stop safely, you are driving too fast.

Re read my message I said I didn’t say I wouldn’t have enough time. Even if people slow down to 20 in a 30 when approaching a crossing if someone steps out whilst your at the crossing you would still have to stop sharply

BuckChuckets · 14/06/2025 08:56

Coconutter24 · 13/06/2025 19:33

Did you stop at the crossing and wait until the car stopped then use the crossing?

I don’t ever shout at anyone but it does annoy me when people just walk straight out because there’s a crossing, yes there’s a crossing but there’s also a car travelling at 30mph and needs time to stop safely

I lived in China for a while - to cross the road you step out but looking the wrong way - this ensures approaching traffic slows down -if you look at approaching traffic they assume you have seen them so keep going -you could try this OP

Of course DRIVERS not just me need time to stop safely but nowhere did I say as a driver I can’t stop with enough time to do it safely 🤷‍♀️

I shouted at some teens who ran out in front of me causing me to emergency stop. It was really close.

So sometimes its reasonable.

BMW6 · 14/06/2025 06:55

I've had things like "Fat Cunt" shouted at me once or twice, I put it down to just being common or garden Utter Wankers. Bless.

Indeed, my experience is obviously different from yours, is that hard to accept?

I don’t know is it? You’re the one keep challenging it

SoftPillow · 13/06/2025 23:11

You were probably just unlucky and they were probably just a weird angry person.

I’ve never been shouted at, witnessed shouting nor have I ever shouted at a pedestrian.

Well you obviously have a very different experience with crossings to me. If I use a zebra crossing I wait on the curb the car approaching stops, I cross and give a wave of thanks car continues everyone goes about their day.

So you expect the pedestrian to just stand like a lemming at the side of the road until a kind hearted driver decides to stop for them?

I use several zebra crossings on a daily basis and most days the only way to get a car to stop for you, IS to to step out (taking care of my own safety). In my experience, the vast majority of drivers on those two roads would rather gouge their eyes out than pause for the 30secs it takes to let someone cross the road.

If you are worried about your ability to stop safely, you should reduce your speed.

Where did I say that?

TooBored1 · 13/06/2025 21:56

Recent times I've been shouted at by a driver:
1 pointing out my road is one way, and they are going the wrong way down it
2 asking a car driver who was parked blocking the whole of the pavement alongside a busy road to move their car - the only way to pass was to walk out into the incoming traffic to go round the parked car
3 Standstill traffic, car decides to drive along the pavement my daughter and I were walking along. As in car literally mounted the pavement and drove 50 feet towards us. Driver then swears at me for not getting out of their way - absolutely nowhere for me to go as there was a 10 ft wall alongside the pavement

BurntBroccoli · 13/06/2025 21:52

StripesSpot · 13/06/2025 18:47

This was at a zebra crossing no I didn’t just step out in the middle of the road 🤣

There is no obligation to say thank you!

The car driver has less priority than you do so it should be them thanking you for waiting for them to stop.

Dymaxion · 13/06/2025 21:48

Does shouting at squirrels and birds count ?

TooBored1 · 13/06/2025 21:47

Coconutter24 · 13/06/2025 20:46

Yes there is a hazard part on the test which everyone who drives has taken yet we still have accidents. So do we just walk out infront of oncoming cars at a crossing and think it’s ok to do this they’ve taken a hazard perception test? Or should we approach the crossing wait til the cars have stopped and then cross when it’s safe to do so?

Correct cars don’t have to legally stop until the pedestrian is on the crossing however most people see someone approaching a crossing and stop for them but equally the pedestrians should be aware of the car and wait till it’s safe to cross

Some drivers think that, I do not. I always stop at a crossing if I see someone approaching however you do get people that just jump straight out before you’ve even stopped.
As a pedestrian I always give someone a thanks it’s just polite

I am not someone who jumps straight out - I don't necessarily trust drivers to stop. I do more often than not have a foot in the road and plenty still ignore it, plus the ones who drive through red lights at a pelican crossing (fortunately. there's not too many of them about).

I disagree that it's just polite in the circumstances to thank a driver for doing what they are legally obliged to do so we'll have to agree to differ. Smile

Coconutter24 · 13/06/2025 21:17

Butchyrestingface · 13/06/2025 21:14

Then either they can stop of their own accord or I can put one foot on the road and they have to bring themselves to a juddering halt. They are definitely not doing me any favours by avoiding having to brake like that.

Some drivers really do think they own the roads.
