Parents copied holiday home

New to mumsnet. A few years ago we brought a holiday caravan by the coast. Shortly after my parents copied and brought just around the corner. My husband strongly dislikes my parents and now he no longer wants to go to our holiday home. I’ve asked my parents to not come over all the time but they really don’t get the message. They will just pop in to say hi because they were passing or come around to use the shower (their caravan is mobile but on a permanent pitch). Im so depressed about the whole situation. AIBU if i told them our holiday place is now ruined and they should have gave us that place to ourselves and not followed?

@UndermyShoeJoe that's terrible. Are owners allowed to rent their caravans out? If they can't even do that, why would anyone buy a static caravan?

Edited

Depends on the site. Some are owners only and you’ll know that when you buy it.

Problems also happen when sites are sold off. So you might buy on a small family owned site that’s very enjoy have fun basic rules is basic rules. Then they want to retire and the children don’t want the site and it gets sold to a big company who come in and change the rules. Because your options are pay the yearly rent and accept the new terms and conditions or pull your caravan off. Which by the way they also charge you for.

Not many sites at all will allow you to bring in your own caravan either at best they might let you use it to trade in to buy one of their newer more expensive caravans.

A lot stipulate they cannot be on site once they hit a certain age, premium plots so sea views and such are only for caravans say no older than 5 years and the rent for those pitches is obviously more expensive too. Decking can only be done by their approved contractors (which they get a cut from)

A lot of impulse buys funnily enough from people who have had a good holiday. They see the sale caravans with the big from £20,995 (that’s cheap as well) this years site fee’s included. Free steps, free siting, owners passes finance from £350 a month, plus we can rent out your caravan for you to cover your fee’s. But then there are so many stipulations for the rent part, you also get none of the school holiday dates as that’s their prime. They might rent it out for over 1k a week but you won’t be getting anywhere near that 1k off your bill, by the time they deduct their cleaning fee’s, the admin fee’s the passes costs, any replacement things a previous guest has broken. The gas used the electric used.

If you want a caravan a couple hours drive just for you and your own family to enjoy they can be worth it. Just pack up your clothes and go is great. But if you want to rent it out and your not a I own multiple vans, clean my own vans, do my own lettings then they are huge money pits. Also the amount of thing renters steal! Cutlery why?? Bedside cabinet again wtf?!?? Sneaking in pets 🤢 it’s pet free for a reason.

Don’t tell them when you’re going there?

Why doesn’t you husband like them at all?

Maybe because they do shit like this.

AffableApple · 13/06/2025 21:35

I'm not surprised he doesn't like them. WTAF is wrong with them; you can't just turn up at someone's holiday home? And buying one nearby too? Tone deaf.

Do you not like them popping over too or are you just trying to deliver a message on your husband's behalf? If the former - being at it, really loudly, bandage gear optional - when they (ahem) come by, would fix that right away.

UndermyShoeJoe · 13/06/2025 20:37

Sadly static caravans are much like cars in fact worse as there is no legal legislation.

You buy it for 80k from site brand new, a year later you want to sell you’ll be lucky if they offer you anywhere near even half. But it will go back up for sale for 40-60k again.

If they allow you to sell privately and not all do, then you get an “admin change of name fee” often between 2k-6k so go Joe Shoe removed. Bottle Blue new owner. Also some sites like to vet possible new owners and will then poach your buyer offering them more favourable site fee’s and such for buying directly.

We sold one back to site a very old one when we out grew it. £500 they gave us. £10,995 it was up for sale at one week later still in the exact same condition.

GloriousGoosebumps · 13/06/2025 20:16

Have you considered whether it's financially viable to simply sell up and buy somewhere else?

Or, in the alternative, can you work out which weeks they'll be at their caravan and go at different times?

If neither is a possibility, you're probably going to have to be more direct.

Why doesn’t you husband like them at all?

I should think he finds them intrusive!

BeliesBelief · 13/06/2025 19:14

You say your DH strongly dislikes your parents. You don’t say how you feel about them.

Marble10 · 13/06/2025 19:13

how come your parents don’t get the memo that your DH doesn’t like them? Do they just ignore that or is it a one way thing?

Why does your dh not like the people who produced the woman he loves

God if my husband liked my mother I would divorce him.

😂 what a strange comment.

I might try that on the dozens of MiL threads from women on here.

Perhaps because they are nasty & inconsiderate ?

Sell or trade yours for another place.

They'd lose a huge amount, & why should they when it's the parents that are the problem ?

UndermyShoeJoe · 13/06/2025 18:23

Redpeach · 13/06/2025 18:23

I know - but a little more tolerance doesnt hurt!

I mean they could be tolerant and respect that their holiday caravan is their sanctuary and not knock on the door everytime they walk by or want a wash.

Redpeach · 13/06/2025 18:23

Auroraloves · 13/06/2025 18:15

it doesn’t work like that 😂

I know - but a little more tolerance doesnt hurt!

UndermyShoeJoe · 13/06/2025 18:22

I mean it’s clear to see why they don’t get along without any back story they don’t respect boundaries clearly.

They shouldn’t be coming knocking to use your shower everytime they want one. What madness is that to site a caravan without a shower and not want to use the provided facilities but rely on other people’s all the times. Bonkers.

They know your dh isn’t keen so they got a caravan on purpose there to shit on him. Piss on his relaxing space. Because now they have ruined it for him and he doesn’t want to visit because they won’t stop visiting when your trying to relax on holiday.

Definitely tell them how they have ruined the experience because they don’t listen or respect your boundaries.

Poopeepoopee · 13/06/2025 18:20

Sell it then. If you're not using it.

I wish I had your problem. Why does your husband strongly dislike your parents?

I honestly couldn't be with someone who hated my family.

The family sound like a PITA to be fair

SharpLily · 13/06/2025 18:09

Brought bought. Sorry.

AbzMoz · 13/06/2025 18:09

This would drive me mad!

As we go into summer set some boundaries or proactively say when you would be up for a catch up - eg brunch on Saturday morning is good before we go doing our own thing. And/or just don’t tell them what days you’ll be onsite. On the other hand can you recognise a benefit that they can look after your DC?

Was there an incident which led to your DH not liking DP? If so, can the air be cleared?

As theyre your parents I think it’s up to you to deliver the message and enforce it.

Screamingabdabz · 13/06/2025 18:08

They’re not necessarily doing anything wrong. They think you’re family and are just being familiar in that way. Your problem is with your DH - why doesn’t he like them?
