Career or looks in women?

What do you think it more important for a woman? I’ve seen some very beautiful women do well in life without a “well paid” career.. I get that career will make your own money but is a career really necessary if your attractive?

Sorry I mean as in they can use their beauty to marry into money etc and wouldn’t necessary have to work… where as I’ve seen women working hard not have anytime to take care of themselves sorry if it comes off as sexist It was just something I’ve noticed..

Who the heck are you hanging around with ?
are you looking at tv/ celebrities and confusing it with real life ??

of course beautiful women can always marry rich and be throphy wives but it’s so precarious and last only as long as you keep a flat tum great blow jobs and you live with the fear that their secretary may come along at any time …. Lots of women think money is worth with living like this - not me

personally I’d chose real love and a rewarding career but I don’t judge how others navigate their lives

TheIceBear · 13/06/2025 19:26

I often find that people who class themselves as “highly intelligent” are not.

DontTouchRoach · 13/06/2025 19:25

Coffeeloveer · 13/06/2025 17:08

I’ve found women working themselves into the ground for a career and not have much time for themselves and women who don’t work/ have their own little projects e.g. beauty business but look after themselves do well long term…

A business isn’t less of a business because it’s beauty-related. It’s still work.

I’m only being honest. Would you prefer I lie for your benefit? Indeed, beauty is subjective. But attractiveness in general can be assessed on facial symmetry etc. My face is attractive. I know what I see in the mirror. I have also been told enough times from both men and women from all demographics, over the years.

@Coffeeloveer

there is a lot more to be attractive than being symmetrical.

id have to see a photo tbh

Thepeopleversuswork · 13/06/2025 19:21

@Coffeeloveer

Also, the thread in itself is not my own opinion but merely a question. I think people should understand that.

But the whole premise of your post assumes a binary choice for women between "looks" or "career" as if women fit neatly into one bucket or the other and pick a fork in the road. You go on to contradict this with your own susequent posts by saying you're highly career driven and very attractive: if this is true (and who am I to question this) then surely you must understand that its possible to be both attractive and successful?

If that's true you must be aware that many women are both attractive and successful, that many are neither, that some could be both but choose not to be because they are more interested in other things. Or that some (most) of us are somewhere on the spectrum on both metrics: neither drop dead beautiful nor obscenely wealthy but getting by the best they can? Oh, and that both beauty and success are wildly subjective and not something which can be ticked off a list.

So why on earth are you positing this silly, inflammatory question as if women have to choose one or the other?

Being attractive can open some doors, but beauty fades — and relying on it alone can leave you vulnerable. A career gives a woman independence, self-worth, and long-term security. I’ve seen too many cases where men chase beauty, then leave for someone younger. With a career, you have your own power — you're not dependent on anyone else to live well or be respected.

Thank you for your input. Another, interesting point of view.

You've been told you're attractive by men and women from ALL demographics? You must be a real showstopper. And HIGHLY intelligent too. Incredible. Tell us more about what it's like to be you!

It’s screaming jealousy, don’t be that woman. Enjoy your weekend x

This is the unaggressive kind of response I was interested in but I have ruffled a few feathers…

Because it’s a sexist and stupid question. Women’s worth, self-value and prospects are down to the choices she makes, the situation she’s in and society, not how nice her hair is.

Yes, pretty privilege exists. But as Helen Of Troy isn’t hanging about in Asda (Booth’s?) looking for a husband we’d all do better focusing on what brings us confidence and happiness over “am I pretty enough not to be of use?”

You might want to proof read your opening post before making such bold claims.

Why? Why would I need to do that? I can type as lazily as I want. Feel free to judge me based on grammar and punctuation. Like said previously, you don’t get brownie points on a forum for punctuation.

What you mean by this is "when I look in the mirror, I see someone I consider attractive", right?

Maybe you're conventionally attractive, lucky you. This thread however, definitely suggests that the other thing you think, that you're attractive internally, is incorrect.

You are entitled to your opinion. However, I have only responded negatively to negative responses. Also, the thread in itself is not my own opinion but merely a question. I think people should understand that.

Above average. But also equally as attractive on the inside. Highly intelligent and career driven. Also, in a long term relationship (13 years) with my childhood sweetheart. With him purely based on love.

I’m sorry, I’m just used to people using at least some punctuation.

Do you want to try again and I can hopefully respond to your reply?

Maybe you should brush up on your own grammar before trying to be smart.

OK that all sounds rigorous, glad we got to the facts of the matter.

How many people do you know, close to you that are attractive?

Do you consider that your opinion of attractive may differ to others?

If you consider yourself attractive, what are your successes in life? If it is only marrying well, do you feel fulfilled?

Being completely honest and too old to care - attractive women do often - I won't say do better in life, but I will say that they are afforded more opportunities than their less attractive counterparts.
I hated living in a village where over 90% of the girls at the primary school had blonde hair and blue eyes.

I wouldn't want to gamble my future self though on my outward appearance. Which is fortunate being 50 😂 But... There are girls who do. Aspiring to be an influencer, or be on Love Island, or anything to be noticed to have a sense of self worth.

So no, I'd rather be able to think, understand life, be single, be old yet still consider my next OU course. Travel and know that it's something I have achieved rather than marry for money.

I don’t know why people are getting so offended lol I was simply asking a question stupid or not I genuinely just wanted peoples opinion and am enjoying reading the replies.. is that not what mumsnet is for? And it’s been a long day I could use proper grammar if I wanted but I really Cba lol

Well you've presented women as having the binary options of being pretty or clever. And if pretty, woop, well done you'll bagged the ultimate prize of a husband. If you're clever, boo, you're now a cat lady who looks like she lives in a bin because she's put work above the important things like being pretty.
Beautiful women can also have success careers. Women who are average in looks and intelligence can find love. Many women are perfectly content with neither a partner or a high flying career. It's almost like women are people and all different.

From your posts here I doubt your second and third sentences a little.

I'm also surprised you;re old enough to have done anything for 13 years.
