People are just vile

Numerous stories about the tragic air India crash all over my socials at the moment. The comments sections are fucking grim. Racist jokes, racist comments, conspiracy theories about the sole survivor, not to mention the gutter press posting photos and names presumably before passengers have been formally identified and families informed.

It’s as though people have become so detached from reality they just don’t care. The fact so many people actually died in such a horrible way seems to be lost on them. No sympathy, not even a respectful silence…they all just want to stick their two penneth in. It’s really bothered me today.

I often wonder what goes on in the minds of people who laugh at these jokes. Take rape jokes, for example. Is it that, deep down, they are repressing an urge to rape and abuse and the joke releases the tension?

What really sickens me is the way people like Jimmy Carr are willing to pander to such people. He made a joke about Jimmy Saville having “f*cked more minors than Thatcher.” Notice how Carr is cunning enough to get in a dig at Thatcher. You see, I’m attacking Thatcher, so I’m cool and beyond criticism. One of my pet hates is left-wing comedians who are vicious and hate-filled and cruel but get away with it because they’re on the ‘right side’. Frankie Boyle is a good example. Or look at Jo Brand, calling for battery acid to be thrown in a conservative politician’s face.

This is why I so admire P. G. Wodehouse. He manages to be hilarious without being cruel.

Edited

I'm not sure I'd see Wodehouse as politically beyond reproach, as someone who did Nazi propaganda broadcasts aimed at placating the US during WW2, and, according to his biographer, genuinely never understood till the end of his days why people were so horrified because he was fundamentally impervious?

I'm so sorry to hear this.
It's heartbreaking
Just saw a pic of a family and their little dcs so excited on the plane before takeoff 😢

😭my friend said there were 21 children
on on the flight. I haven't read much about it because it'll upset me & wont help them.

the only hope is the poor little things didn't suffer or know what was happening ❤️‍🩹

If you follow the right accounts racism is almost non existent. Maybe an odd stupid random comment in the replies by attention seekers but that's about it.

I maintain the worst are the woke left, 100%. It's currently in the process of eating itself.

@Jonny234 - do you know what “woke”means and where it comes from?

oh Ok, I will tell you.
Woke means you’ve woken up (had your eyes opened) to certain behaviours, you may not have appreciated were offensive to others and you’ve done this by trying to educate yourself. For example, until I educated myself eg asked black friends in more detail certain questions, I didn’t realise that they didn’t really like having their hair touched and were offended by this. This is a certain type of smaller example.

You may therefore find certain lefty types a bit more “testy” and that’s because they’re aware certain language upsets other groups of people and are trying to correct language or behaviour so other groups in society aren’t upset!! Some people who don’t understand this or have this emotional intelligence may just find it all a bit dull cos it’s only a bit of a larf.

Ahh yes, Sky which is owned by that well know lefty Rupert Murdoch. FFS the utter crap people spout. 😂

Whilst I agree that Sky News is not left wing, it’s no longer owned by Rupert Murdoch.

Mumofsoontobe3 · 13/06/2025 17:04

I've read some absolutely vile comments too. From grown adults!!! Outrageous. Those were real people, with real lives, families, children and careers. All wiped through one horrendous accident. It's gut wrenching and a true tragedy. My thoughts remain with the families who expected to meet their loved ones at Heathrow and are left with nothing but speculation, disgusting comments from the public and a gaping hole in their hearts.

Whilst I agree with you, they were due to land at Gatwick, not Heathrow.

I’m on FB and haven’t seen anything disrespectful. The thing I didn’t like was the publishing of the photo of the sole survivor in his hospital bed , where’s the dignity / privacy .

I dont know I agree.

i was in hospital earlier this year& couldn't have given a FF if anyone had taken my photo & posted it everywhere.

if I was the survivor of something like this I'd be fine with it. He obviously consented to the photo being taken ( or they wouldn't have hit such a relaxed photo).

The point to note is the tolerant left is anything but. Woke lefty channels and platforms like the BBC, Sky, Ch4 news, Facebook spew out propoganda rather than news and attracts the worst. This is why they are all slowly dying.

X is circa 50/50 left and right and people can have a genuine discussion and if necessary agree to disagree.

What fantasy are you living?

X is a cesspit of hate.

sarral · 13/06/2025 19:01

not read the thread, but I said exact same thing to DH this morning😏Read a news article( on Fb) and that was enough, the comments were absolutely vile!
I despair, I really do😓

AmelieSummer25 · 13/06/2025 19:01

GCDPAF · 13/06/2025 17:46

The May Day call was because of lack of thrust and power failure, an open door wouldn’t cause that. I saw a video of a guy who was allegedly on the same plane on its last successful flight directly before the doomed flight and he said nothing was working on it - lights, steward call button, tvs, which would confirm it was struggling with power already!

If that's true then heads need to roll!! Someone IS responsible for allowing it to fly this tragic flight.

Sadly, that was my colleague and his family. A very kind, gentle man. Both well respected and experienced Dr’s. I’ve read comments about how they were just coming over to claim all our benefits.

rhomb · 13/06/2025 19:00

There are the homophobic comments about the couple who filmed themselves at the airport.

I find those who are racist, homophobic and other anti things from my experience, the most ignorant.

TheChosenTwo · 13/06/2025 18:58

I’ve not seen any but I don’t really read news, mainly watch it on tv and listen on the radio so thankfully I’ve avoided it all. Only seen it mentioned on here - absolutely sickening. Makes me so sad to hear about it (aside from the actual headline which is devastating enough).
Anyone reading the DM is surely prepared to be reading those comments, I’ve heard on here enough times to know what the comment section looks like. I couldn’t put myself through it. I know people like that exist but I’ve got no need to go looking for it.

WooleyMunky · 13/06/2025 18:57

holymoly56 · 13/06/2025 17:11

Mostly Facebook where the overwhelming number of comments on news articles have been fucking gross. I just can’t understand how are there are so many people who would respond publicly to a tragedy like this with sick jokes and racist comments.

Musk, Zuck, and the Digger are only after the clickbait, what do you expect

holymoly56 · 13/06/2025 18:49

lifeonmars100 · 13/06/2025 18:41

I do think that anonymity means that people can give full rein to their vileness and they feel safe to say things that if spoken aloud in public they would rightly be condemed. I despair for the world sometimes

It’s not even anonymous, it’s their full names and photos of themselves! Unless some are using burner accounts but that can’t be all.

This makes me even more happy I don’t engage with any social media.

Ddakji · 13/06/2025 17:29

Yes, people are vile but it sounds like your feed needs addressing.

I am on FB only and haven't seen anything like that.

LindorDoubleChoc · 13/06/2025 18:47

I've just glanced at social media about it and as well as the horrific racism there is also Jurassic Age homophobia about one photo of a married male couple. Entirely predictable Sad.

I feel I need to leave it well alone. I don't know anyone affected and my sorrow for all the lost souls goes without saying. I don't need to make a comment on FB or Insta about it, it's just pointless.

I avoided the Jeremy Vine show yesterday because I knew I would find it too much. And yet, today, again the whole first hour was dedicated to this accident - this time dressed up as a phone-in about individuals who just narrowly missed an event like this. If BBC Radio 2 are happy to milk it for all it's worth, are they really any better than "the socials"? I don't know.

dynamiccactus · 13/06/2025 18:44

I've not seen anything and in fact this is the first thread I've seen on MN, I'd assumed they were zapping them all.

It's interesting the Times has mainly kept comments switched off, but maybe that was more to do with compromising any investigation.

What I did think was if it's not your time, it's not your time - the guy who survived and without much in the way of injuries was a miracle although he may not necessarily feel that way as his brother died.

ButteredRadish · 13/06/2025 18:42

Just had this exact conversation with my mum. Some of the stuff I’ve read is directly out of Nazi germany and sadly, I’m not exaggerating. Genuinely that calibre of abuse

FFS. Someone just has to shoehorn in stuff about the "woke left" at every opportunity, whether it's related to the thread topic or not.

HarperStern · 13/06/2025 18:35

I have only followed this story on specialist aviation forums and it is striking that on every thread Indian posters come on to thank everyone for not making racist comments, as they are seeing them on all other news sources. It really is widespread, and abhorrent.

EasternStandard · 13/06/2025 18:34

I’ve avoided most of this. I find it hard to contemplate how scared they must have been.

lifeonmars100 · 13/06/2025 18:34

I have not looked at the comments, sadly I know that there will be some vile racist stuff in there. It is an incomprehensible tragedy, so many familes grieving for loved ones and that man who was the sole survivor will be forever traumatised. Why people lack the basic empathy to think "how would I feel if that had happened to my realtive or friend" is a mystery to me
