Raw mushrooms in a salad

When I was a kid, I seem to remember adults eating salads made of finely sliced raw mushrooms. Absolutely revolting.

does anyone else remember this or was it just my family? Maybe you eat them now?

Yabu- yum yum feed more more of those raw mushrooms
Yanbu- it’s a no

Am I the only person who has literally never heard of anyone eating raw mushrooms?!

I honestly thought you couldn't eat them raw as they were poisonous. Off to Google now 😂.

ExquisiteSocialSkills · 12/06/2025 09:29

They need to be really fresh but raw mushrooms can be delicious. Marinated in vinaigrette is good but they still need to be super fresh.

Thanks everyone. This thread is an eye opener.

Interested in people saying they are crunchy. To me they are a bit spongy.

Agree, how can a raw mushroom possibly be crunchy? They're flabby and spongy.

I was randomly just thinking the other day as I prepared my lunch, how I remembered having raw mushrooms in my salads as a kid in the 90’s!

C8H10N4O2 · 12/06/2025 09:21

If mushrooms are spongey they are not fresh.

Mushrooms a la Grecque - food of the gods, especially in late Summer picnics. (some recipes cook the mushrooms but DM always bought firm tiny buttons and marinated them in the garlic oil and herbs)

outerspacepotato · 12/06/2025 01:33

Big shrooms fan here, I eat them daily. Right now, I have yellow oyster mushrooms and lion's mane and just finished up some maitake. I sauted some of the oyster shrooms this morning for my scrambled tofu breakfast and used them in my lunch salad along with the lion's mane raw.

NattyTurtle59 · 12/06/2025 01:23

Raw mushrooms are far nicer than cooked ones.

InterestedDad37 · 12/06/2025 00:54

Yum yum, love them! 🍄 (not red, spotty ones like this emoji, obvs!)

I have never had raw mushrooms in a shop bought salad, a pack of stir fry yes but never in a salad

Boots had one about 30 years ago that I replicated because I liked it so much.

FagsMagsandBags · 12/06/2025 00:36

I haven't had raw mushrooms in salad for ages and now I want some. I love mushrooms any which way!

roshi42 · 12/06/2025 00:00

Such a craving now. Have added mushrooms to my shopping list. Will eat them raw dipped in red pepper houmous.

Andoutcomethewolves · 11/06/2025 23:55

This thread is indeed an eye opener! I love mushrooms but cooked. Never heard of anyone but my aforementioned housemate's child eating them raw.

(Making mental note to try them given the love on this thread 🤣)

TheSlantedOwl · 11/06/2025 23:53

@Ilovemyshed Recipe please!

Andoutcomethewolves · 11/06/2025 23:50

I used to live (housemates) with a very hippyish mum who ONLY gave her primary aged child raw mushrooms as a 'treat'. I had to hide in my room if I was eating anything like crisps or biscuits while the poor 8 year old ate her raw mushrooms 🤣

HeyThereDelila · 11/06/2025 23:45

YABU, I never had it until my late DUncle moved in with my late DGM - he always made salads this way: lettuce, sliced tomatoes, sliced raw mushrooms, sliced red onion, balsamic vinegar. Delicious.

I miss him, my DGM and the mushroom salads 😞

nopiesleftinthisvehicle · 11/06/2025 23:44

Raw mushrooms are superb for - as my mum would have said - "Putting a good road through you" 😁

Bonjovispyjamas · 11/06/2025 23:39

Raw mushrooms are delicious, as are cooked ones 😋

Horseebooks · 11/06/2025 23:38

i guess I could google but wtfs this about raw mushrooms being bad for you

Mammut · 11/06/2025 23:32

I like them but my kids think they are a weird abomination

CluelessAboutBiology · 11/06/2025 23:13

I love mushrooms, but they have to be cooked.

BlackboardMonitorVimes · 11/06/2025 23:13

I used to work on a fruit and veg stall, raw mushrooms were my absolute favourite, I could snack on them all day. However, they do play havoc with your insides after (quite) a few. I like peeling them like grapes, eating the skin first as it’s peeled and then the full mushroom.

Skanky slimy cooked ones are not good.

KallaxFan · 11/06/2025 23:07

I love raw mushrooms, but having had an autism special interest that took me on a deep dive into mushrooms (edible and psychedelic ones!) I learnt from Paul Stamets (mushroom guru who even wears a hat made out of mushrooms!) that raw mushrooms are not good for you at all and should be cooked, some to quite a high heat (portobello mushrooms iirc). He’s on several documentaries and podcasts - very interesting man.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 11/06/2025 23:06

Raw mushrooms are my fav

LaughingCat · 11/06/2025 23:03

Love raw mushrooms - like pps have said, they have to be fresh to be nice. Definitely still make those kinds of salads at home now!

ChaToilLeam · 11/06/2025 23:02

Yuck no, only cooked! 🤢
