AIBU?
Fucking government online licence renewing site won't accept my photo because I've lost 5 stone and my face is thinner than the rest of my IDs. I assume that's what it is they refuse to tell you and after three attempts you are out.
I have to do it online because I've had major surgery and can't drive yet.
I'll lose my job if I go back without a driving license - it's compulsory.
The nearest post office to me that does it is 10 miles away in a warren of streets with no parking and there is literally nobody to take me.
What the fuck am I supposed to do then?
Excuse the swearing I'm just so stressed.
I've just had equal shit applying for my blue badge and that's going to take 3 months to process.
I'm trying to get better so I can return to work and it's just stress and more stress.

Yup that's right. I could be working anywhere in the county at the last minute. Not nursing any more, I couldn't deal with that these days.
Anyway I've booked tomorrow off as annual leave and I'm getting a taxi up to the post office so it's sorted.
I'm just mentally and physically done in at the moment trying to keep all the balls in the air. It just makes every simple task monumental.
Even stuff like food delivery. They won't bring the food in the house any more I have to tell them to dump it all out into my hallway and transfer it all one by one into a wheeled crate with a helping hand. It takes me hours. The kitchen is literally by the front door.

Ocado will still bring shopping into the house.

Strawberries86 · 11/06/2025 08:54

@SirRaymondClench i think it needs modernising because the websites provide incorrect information, the main branch’s in my experience are difficult to get to. Every task the workers do is just processy and lengthy. It’s not convenient in the slightest. No business could survive being so user unfriendly.

AmelieSummer25 · 11/06/2025 08:42

I 'think' she needs to drive FOR her job. Not TO her job. Nurse in the commmnity or such like. Could be wrong, but it's how it reads to me, with driving being compulsory.

I would say you don’t need your licence back for it to be valid. I was late renewing mine but after I sent it away using paper form it was showing as valid three days after it was received by DVLA by using the online check code.

My work were happy to accept that I was able to drive based on this and then I sent copy of card after it arrived.

godmum56 · 11/06/2025 08:52

House0fBamboo · 10/06/2025 22:42

Surely your driving licence is still valid- it's just the photo card that's out of date?

If you have ever had a photo driving licence then the photocard IS the driving licence. The only paper licences which are still valid are the ones where the holder has never had a photo driving licence and these expire when the holder becomes 70.

TroysMammy · 11/06/2025 08:46

I still have my paper licence but I think it's shocking that you have to have a passport to renew online at a cheaper price. If I needed to change to a photo licence, doubtful bar a big lottery win, I'd have to buy a passport as part of the identification process even though I have no intention of going abroad any time soon. I feel this is discriminatory to the elderly, disabled, people of limited means and those who don't want to travel abroad.

the op can't drive anywhere, so that is not an option.

But if it was a case of losing my job or paying £100 - id pay the £100

But in the uk peoples driving licences run over all the time and no-one checks

If you need to drive for your job, you'll not be able to go back to work until you can drive and would you be able to use a bus before you can drive and return to work?

could you put something on your local Facebook that you need a lift to that town and if anyone is going that way could they take you with them? Thats what people on our local Facebook do - it saves traffic and helps out getting to further places away

The photo id driving licences have to be renewed every 10 years

Just looked at mine, it says 4a 03.08.2015; 4b 02.08.2025. That means I need to do mine doesn’t it?!

Had completely forgotten about this. Thank you OP.

dynamiccactus · 11/06/2025 08:40

Do you have somewhere that can take the photo for you locally? They charge about £5 and make sure it is a valid picture. Just in case there's another reason the photo isn't valid.

AmelieSummer25 · 11/06/2025 08:37

EDIT: it had dropped the post I quoted, must have cross posted with MN deleting all their posts!

Then read her posts & try thinking about how frustrating (worrying & scary) it must be, to be her right now.

its all very easy when you're well to be 'just do this or that'. 🙄🙇🏻‍♀️

MikeRafone · 11/06/2025 08:35

CaptainFuture · 10/06/2025 22:49

But don't get taxi all the way there? Drive to a close cafe, park then get a taxi?
And why is it £50 for a ten mile taxi journey?!!

Edited

Yes this! And so long as it’s in date you can use the picture.

I opted for this. Got a new licence in a week. Didn't have go go anywhere

My best mate is literally on hospice and palliative care, she’s epileptic and severely sight impaired ... she still swims in rivers and the sea all year round.

Gettingbysomehow · 11/06/2025 07:24

Maybe I am making a drama of it but It's just all so frustrating because I'm in a lot of pain and just need to rest. I was confined to bed for15 months prior to my op and have horrendous muscle wastage and I've just had to deal with it alone. No help from the nhs or GP whatsoever, crawling to bathroom etc.
I've had to work from home to keep my job during all this doing a job that isn't in my job description, I'm clinical NHS so thats all been very stressful and this has been the last straw.
I'm going to just pay for the taxi and be done with it.

Just call them OP - don't get an expensive taxi before you do that. It sounds like this is the last straw in a generally stressful time for you, OP. That's totally understandable - it's infuriating when a simple task takes disproportionately long - but save your energy for other stuff.

My online renewal was rejected a few years ago and it turned out there was a known technical issue on their side affecting certain licences. They fixed it and it was fine. You'd kick yourself if it just turned out the website was down when you tried earlier. Even if it's not that they should send you a paper form and save you the journey. I hope everything picks up a bit for you soon.

brunettemic · 11/06/2025 08:29

£50 for a 10 mile taxi journey? Not a chance.

Oh fuck off. She’s had major surgery. She’s tired and in pain. Have a day off from being so mean.

Loulabelle1234 · 11/06/2025 08:15

I'm sure I renewed mine online and they used the same photo as my passport. I have a different hair colour and hair style now but I don't care as we can change in 10 years so whose to say I didn't look like that when I applied (if you know what I mean)

Why?

I have a Blue Badge

I have no issues walking. Being disabled takes many forms

Can you use an old photo?

@Deluxecoffee
You are absolutely determined to find a way of accusing a person with disabilities of being a liar. Please stop it. The OP does not have to account to you for their medical conditions, the reason for their disability or their hobbles. It is really offensive that you think they must. If you believe the OP is a troll - report it. If you simply want to find someone to bully, jog on... bullying disability isn't a good look.

Blue badge . I just go to my local council with photo and ID and form. Pay my tenner.. it's sent to me 3 days later.

🤣🤣🤣

Either you haven’t done it in a while or our local council have different rules

Ours you have to send off proof of diagnosis within the last 6 months in order to renew a Blue Badge. So if you have a lifelong disability you have to go back and either get reassessed or ask the already straining assessment centre/department to write in paper form that your diagnosis still stands

Then you get a letter to say that appointment letters are not valid and then you have to write again to point out that the letter that was sent was a diagnosis letter

Dont get me started on the over 60’s travel card that won’t accept a photo of my passport and the alternative, my driving licence number apparently is invalid

Add to that I have ADHD and I am still paying for my travel

Glowingup · 11/06/2025 08:06

Kendodd · 11/06/2025 08:04

Last time I had to renew my photocard I just sent them the same picture from ten years ago (so same picture on my old driving licence). They just accepted it.
I know it's not in the spirit (or perhaps rules) anyway, it worked, no hassle, try that.

Yeah actually I did that too, possibly by accident. It means that at some point my photo will be 20 years old 😂
