To think a dishwasher will change our lives?

Question285 · 10/06/2025 09:25

Never had a dishwasher before and never thought I needed one. But now, with two small DC, I think it would make a world of difference. DH, who does most of the washing up, disagrees.

So, does anyone have any input? Does having a dishwasher make life better? Is it worth the investment? Will it be so life changing that even my reluctant DH will be persuaded? 😄

Also, any brand suggestions? Is it better to spend more for a top brand? I’ve narrowed it down to two models, a Hisense and an AEG. It’s about £250 difference between them.

Yes, it’s life-changing. Do it!

BirminghamRose50 · 10/06/2025 17:15

Absolutely ! We have an AEG atm and no complaints ( having said that we've had both Hotpoint and Zanussi and they were great!). Just bare in mind hubby might become an authority on ' the right way to stack everything'😂

Any thoughts on Hisense? With DH not fully on board I’d rather not spend extra, but also want a decent dishwasher that won’t break after a year and hear ‘I told you so’

I’ve just had a look on Which? Top at 82% were Miele & Bosch, followed by Beko & Hisense at 81%. Careful though, as the ratings are for specific models.

Ricoletti · 10/06/2025 16:15

Absolute game changer !! I love my dishwasher, it’s genuinely one of the most important appliances in my house and I would replace/repair immediately if it broke.

I empty it every morning while my coffee is brewing, so through the day breakfast dishes/packed lunch prep , any lunch dishes and then the evening pans and dishes go straight in there… then it gets switched on every night ready to empty the next day.

I didn’t have one for a few years and hated there always being dishes (clean or dirty ) stacked up in my kitchen.

My sink and surrounding areas are always clean and clear- which makes a quick kitchen clean so much easier.

if you can afford it defo go for it. You won’t look back!

Why are people ‘waiting around for it to finish’? Is this like people who dismiss electric cars because it takes a while to charge, and ‘it only takes ten minutes to pull in at a service station and fill up with petrol’?

I suppose it’s just a different way of living isn’t it? I like to set my electricals to do their thing slowly overnight, and wake up in the morning to a dishwasher full of clean crockery, a fully charged car and a washing machine finishing off its cycle while I eat my breakfast. I have got used to not having to take time out of my day to do these things manually. But clearly others prefer it!

Different perceptions of what’s efficient I guess 🤷‍♀️

It’s not waiting around, it’s just a split job to me. Put it in and then get it all out to put away later.

I’ve just made me and dd lunch. When we finished, I washed up two plates, a chopping board, a knife, quickly dried them with a towel and put back in the cupboard. Took minutes.

If I had a dish washer, it wouldn’t be filed until the evening then I’d have a whole heap of stuff to put away. I prefer to do things quickly as I go.

Mooflon12 · 10/06/2025 14:14

It's genuinely completely changed my life. I feel silly saying it but it really really has.
I spent my whole adult life without one until last year and I couldn't live without one again. And with young kids it's so much more hygienic. I'm excited for you! 😂

BIossomtoes · 10/06/2025 14:14

I think you and your friend have had my share of spontaneously combusting appliances as well as your own @skyeisthelimit!

Lavendersong · 10/06/2025 14:11

I couldn’t be without my dishwasher or my tumble dryer

skyeisthelimit · 10/06/2025 14:00

I never run anything overnight. I have had both a dishwasher and a tumble dryer go up in smoke, and was able to prevent a fire each time. A friend lost their house due to a tumble dryer.

I don't watch over them, but am in the house and awake, should anything go wrong.

Fire Brigade advice not to leave appliances unattended is there for a reason.

There are always people who are happy to put stuff on overnight and go to sleep, but some of us have had close shaves that mean we know what can happen.

We have 8 of everything for 2 of us, and that is usually enough, unless the dishes aren't done (looking at you DD), and then we might run out.

A tumble dryer is even better!

I agree i could not live without my tumble dryer.

Surely you have an underc counter cupboard nearish to the drain to sacrifice?

I am already sacrificing one of these cupboards for a water softener (before my sparkly shower gets totally wrecked by lime scale).

I could get one if I get a carpenter to shorten the shelves which span the width of the kitchen (my late MIL put them up and they are special to me - and lovely), then put a fridge/freezer in the freed up space, then put a dishwasher where the current under counter fridge is.

It's just me and DS at home now, so I don't think we need a full sized one, and I also don't have loads and loads of pots and pans.

Dunno.....getting rid of Artex and decorating is higher priority atm.

It’s a possibility not a probability. I’ll take my chances. I once went away for three days and left the iron on without the place going up in flames so I’m quite blasé about the level of risk involved.

The electrical fire thing wasn't my argument!
I tend towards taking my chances too. I wonder if I'm being hypocritical though; I would happily leave the house or go to bed with the dishwasher or washing machine on, but never go out if the oven is on and I'm the only one in the house.

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/06/2025 13:30

I love mine. Had now for 14yrs. Not sure how managed to wash up for 11yrs before that

they don’t seem to last long. Usually 2/4yrs so had think 3 in 14yrs but worth buying a new one as soon as it goes wrong

it’s kinda like - you don’t miss it as never had one but once had one I could never be without

LittleBitofBread · 10/06/2025 13:27

The possibility of an electrical fault and a fire has been given as a reason for not letting these things run overnight or when you’re out of the house.

I would love a dishwasher, but can't fit one in unless I do a whole kitchen redesign.......and there are other priorities.

They make glasses go cloudy though so be careful

Just buy frosted glasses 🤣

Oh it's perfectly possible to get things properly clean by hand.

It is, but it won't be as clean as the dishwasher.

Plus you're tired to the sink!

HouseFullOfChaos · 10/06/2025 13:10

I was you 10 years ago. DH did all the washing up and really didn't see the need for a dishwasher. We got one and it's made life so much easier. Little things like baking with the children is less daunting knowing I don't have to wash all the dishes.
After researching one to buy I thought I'd only put it on every 2/3 days but the loads they say they take are never accurate. It goes on daily.

Littlemisscapable · 10/06/2025 13:09

Dishwashers are amazing and the dishes are much cleaner. Don't get the cheapest one.

honeylulu · 10/06/2025 13:07

It definitely makes life easier and it's SO nice to have clear worktops, no dirty crockery parked on top for the next round of washing up.

We do still wash up at least once a day as there are always some bits that aren't suitable (or will be needed again before DW is full) but that's really just a quick 10 min job and so much better than a big wash up after every meal.

ApathyMartha · 10/06/2025 13:06

Never thought I wanted one and when I got one would never go back. Your DH can always load and unload it!

My dishwasher broke recently. Let’s just say I was very happy when the new one was delivered.
