Am I too much ? Asking DH to do his business in the spare toilet

This is a funny one. We have 3 and a half bathrooms in our house. 3 upstairs and 1 little bathroom downstairs.

upstairs there are 2 en suites- one off the master bedroom and one off the guest room, plus a family bathroom.

I loathe walking into a bathroom and it being smelly. I just can’t deal with it. It’s gross.

at weekends, DH tends to do his business in the master en suite. But this is where all our stuff is. I hate not being able to go up there or if I really need to, having to breathe in the disgusting smell.

so I’ve asked him, why can’t you just use one of the bathrooms that’s just completely not in use ? Why do you need to use the bathroom that’s most in use by me and also near our bedroom, which also makes the idea of it gross.

I would just never dream of doing it. I try to be discreet and use one of the bathrooms that’s not got all our stuff in.

men just don’t think like this right ? My DH thinks I’m ridiculous but also finds it funny and has complied.

what does everyone think ? Do I sound like I have a stick up my bum ? I just can’t stand it. I’m really funny about it and think all traces should be covered up. DH thinks I’m ridiculous and that it’s a normal thing in life and I’m way too uptight.

I absolutely hate it too op but have lived in a house with DH and DS ( 19 yrs old) that has only one bathroom for 10 years . It is annoying, not to say occasionally yukky, but you get used to it. We all open the window and use the deodoriser spays. Absolutely no one says anything about lingering smell as it can't be helped, as long as the window and spray have been used which does help quite a bit

I am seriously looking forward to the work we are planning on the house , so that we have more thain on bathroom.

Surely the whole point of having an en-suite toilet/bathroom is that it's right close to you for convenience when you're in the bedroom?

The same as the idea of having a toilet(s) both upstairs and downstairs is so that you have one close by, whichever floor of the house you're on.

If you don't value the adjacency of the toilet to your bedroom and just go and use one at the other side/on another floor of the house anyway, it seems a very poorly placed non-facility.

Why not just do a modern version of the toilet at the bottom of the garden and allocate an isolated-as-possible end of the house as a toilet block - then have as many cubicles as you reckon you need for the number of occupants all concentrated there, away from the rest of the house?

I really don’t care which toilet he shits in 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

But seeing as though he gets up earlier, he goes to the downstairs one so he doesn’t wake me up. He’s down there anyway from 5:30am. Usually goes straight to make his coffee, drinks that, does his downstairs poo and gets on the treadmill in the garage. It suits him, and I very much appreciate not being woken up.

Just to let you know, there were a couple of serious typos in your post. Obviously this is MN, and we all know that men stench out the toilet, just for the sheer fun and perviness of it, and delight in doing so and revel in their poor womenfolk's traumas; whilst women actually need to poo sometimes - and it never ever pongs in the slightest, or even makes the tiniest plopping sound - so I presume you got that entirely the wrong way around... right...?!

Women, and Gary Linekar, have farts that smells of unicorns, rainbows and happiness. My Mother is the exception the rule. She drops stenchbombs that will melt your corneas.

Thefrenchconnection1 · 10/06/2025 22:57

Yes vip poo works ! Just use before pooping. Makes a big difference

InterestedDad37 · 10/06/2025 22:54

Tell him to sort his diet out 😃 And no, it isn't "men", it's your husband. My poo smells of roses, but I would use the other loo if it were an issue 😀

guineapigsears · 10/06/2025 22:50

I make my husband go upstairs (three storey) - but he does have a chronic bowel disease and his bodily functions are horrendous. I was actually sick having visited the bathroom shortly after him in the early days and tbh, it does affect how attracted I am to him.

He is not even allowed to set foot in MY en-suite.

Itchybritches · 10/06/2025 22:41

I’m with you, OP. A bit of consideration is not asking too much when there are other bathrooms in the house!

Does this stuff work? My poor Dad needs something for my mother. How such a small tiny woman makes such enormous putrid smells we have no idea!

My DH does this of his own accord.
He gets up earlier than me, so has his coffee and does his business in the downstairs toilet…..so our en suite toilet is fresh as a daisy when I wake up 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

So why can't you keep your stuff in one of the other bathrooms? Problem solved! Why should it be him who has to do whatever he needs to do in a less convenient alternative location?

Because this bathroom is the one which opens directly to the bedroom. That wouldn't disappear if she stopped using it.

I bought dh vip poo for when we are in a hotel as he insists on christening every hotel room and stinking it out.

Yeah but my stuff is in our en suite. I inevitably need to go on there.

Yanbu - I send OH down to do his morning poo in the downstairs loo.

Doesn't that stink the house out where your spending more time and having visitor?

KnittyNell · 10/06/2025 15:34

Only one toilet here, it’s never been a problem we just open the window.

Same as me

but

if I had 3/4 then yes I would have one of the spare bathrooms as the poo lol and not the en-suite

You sound really, really uptight IMO OP.

Talking about 'doing his business', being 'discreet' and 'all traces must be covered up'.

Are you this uptight about sex too?

funny you'd write that, I would have thought it was the other way round.

Being very "open" about all bodily function was a turn off and killer of any intimacy.

I like hot sex, but anyone rudely burping, farting or being inconsiderate with their toilet habit in general would put me right off. On date 1 or after being married for 10, 15 years...

Actually, becoming part of the furniture so a man wouldn't put as much efforts now as they did at the beginning would put me right off too.

We only have one toilet and I would LOVE to have enough toilets to have a dedicated poo-free one, honestly sounds amazing and not a real hardship.

Anyway, I reckon you phrased your question wrong OP. If you’d been gone “aibu to be bothered DH’s poo makes our bedroom stink” half the advice probably would have been to grow a backbone and make him poo in a different toilet. It’s only because you’ve already found a solution that you’re being told you’re wrong

So if you were happily there, having a wee, and then you suddenly realised that you needed an 'upgrade'... would you really finish off in the no-poos toilet, clench, adjust your clothing, wash your hands - and then scuttle away and start all over again in another poos-allowed toilet (assuming there's one vacant)?

Or would you just automatically favour the omnitoilet, knowing that it offers you more options and flexibility?

PomeloOud · 10/06/2025 18:38

Just get him to spray air freshener.

Cloying artificial stench, plus shit. That’s even worse. 🤮

TooSquaretobehip · 10/06/2025 18:33

YABU You sound too Hyacintha Bucketish to me. Just get him to spray air freshener. There. Done.
