Friend in a mood with me because of comment I made at dinner

Out with friends last night - one has been travelling so I’ve not seen them for over a year. She asked me why I’m not on Instagram anymore; I replied I turned 30 years old and grew up - she laughed.

Another friend who was present (and uses IG) said my reply was rude and that I insinuated anyone over 30 who uses IG needs to grow up.

That’s not what I was saying (although I do find it all a bit cringe these days if I’m honest!).

Do you think my reply was inappropriate or did my friend over react?

I would laugh a little at anyone who said anything as silly as that, and I’d laugh a bit harder if I knew they rushed straight to another social media platform to record my reaction whilst retaining their bizarre sense of superiority.

Well said.

Come on, it was a dig and you know it otherwise you would have just said ‘no, I’m not on IG’

Don’t be one those people that makes smart arse digs and then gets all upset when you piss people off because of it.

I don’t use any social media apart from Facebook, it doesn’t make me special or interesting or cool.

Agree. At least own it. Good for her calling you out for being condescending.

MrsEverest · 08/06/2025 01:19

Surely you don’t really think that though? That you needed to hit 30 to grow up, and that anything to do with social media was evidence of it?

ChessorBuckaroo · 08/06/2025 01:12

Instagram is definitely for children. The worst is people posting images of food they are about to eat.

LBFseBrom · 08/06/2025 00:58

Might have been better if you'd just said you had outgrown it.

BobbyBiscuits · 08/06/2025 00:49

Well it did mean you thought those over thirty were immature for using it. How else could the comment be construed?

But if it was in a lightheaded way I'd still just laugh it off of I was her. You'd have to be pretty insecure to think you should stop using a social media platform because someone made a throw away comment.

If you hurt her feelings then it would be decent to apologise. But neither of you should dwell on it and just maybe make your jokes a bit more subtle next time.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 08/06/2025 00:43

I mean it was a bit rude, but I think it's OTT to sulk about it.

I'd probably have said something like who wants to grow up and get creaky knees these days, and laughed it off.

Bonjovispyjamas · 08/06/2025 00:18

I'm 58 and only joined Instagram around 5 years ago. It's a great way of keeping in contact with friends abroad and for talking to other fans of a singer I like all over the world.

GinAndJuice99 · 08/06/2025 00:11

I'd just laugh if someone said that. Mad all these people think it was mega-bitchy. Honestly, who cares?

ScurryfungeSpuddle · 08/06/2025 00:11

You had a dig and got called out 🤷‍♀️

Good for your friend.

She's clearly not a MNetter or she would've sat in silence being 'gobsmacked' or 'shaking and crying' 😁

Instead she spoke up for herself.

ReadingSoManyThreads · 08/06/2025 00:07

I would have taken it as a joke. That's what I say when people ask why I don't drink, "I grew up after leaving Uni". No one has ever (that I'm aware of), taken offence or thought I was bring rude. I usually say it light heartedly.

EllasNonny · 08/06/2025 00:06

At least own it.
Please tell me you haven't returned thinking you've reinvented the wheel, travel shaming the plebs?
I may or may not be projecting following the behaviour of a close friend before she realised how she was behaving after she climbed Everest spent a year off her face in Asia.

Sidebeforeself · 07/06/2025 23:58

Well you are far too old to be on Mumsnet ! Seriously please don’t think anyone is too old to do anything!

Gettygrip · 07/06/2025 23:54

Yes you are rude.

londongirl12 · 07/06/2025 23:54

Yeah you sounded like a bitch

PinkArt · 07/06/2025 23:52

You made a judgemental comment, unnecessarily, and were called out on it. Own what you said.

StarDolphins · 07/06/2025 23:43

JustFeedMeCake · 07/06/2025 23:02

You were rude. As if people over 30 aren’t on instagram 🙄

The over sensitive! Be confident with your choices, it doesn’t matter whether someone thinks over 30’s shouldn’t be on it! If you’re over 30, it’s time to do whatever you like without validation from others!

ThatCalmCat · 07/06/2025 23:42

So what would you have said if she had asked you if you were on Mumsnet?

DaisiesAndDonuts · 07/06/2025 23:38

Get a grip everyone 😂 what a sorry world we live in. No one can have a joke anymore. That comment wouldn't have bothered me in the slightest

StarDolphins · 07/06/2025 23:37

Silly reason to get in a mard over. Who cares if others think IG is for under 30’s. Unless you have low self esteem or need validation of your choices, just do what you like!

UANBU op!

Hsisbdh6383 · 07/06/2025 23:31

Your comment was condescending but she's overreacting by doing more than just rolling her eyes and moving on.

LittleSoo · 07/06/2025 23:27

Branleuse · 07/06/2025 22:50

Heck. It was a bit rude.
Why is it cringe to use Instagram but not Mumsnet?

I'd be so embarrassed if someone caught me using Mumsnet, I hide my phone when I'm on it so no one sees me using it 🤣

Picklechicken · 07/06/2025 23:09

Oh come on, you knew what you were doing. Shitty comment to make. Very mean girls ish.

chatgptsbestmate · 07/06/2025 23:07

queenMab99 · 07/06/2025 23:02

I'm 75 and I don't use Instagram, I think it is full of crap and wannabe influencers. You were just being honest.

It's run by algorithms .....so what you watch and who you follow dictate, to a large degree, what you see

On tiktok you can tell the algorithm what you're not interested in, by holding the screen and clicking 'not interested '

Don't watch or follow crap and influencers and suddenly IG and tiktok are fun

🤩🤩

maddening · 07/06/2025 23:06

Op exactly what did you mean by you are not on IG as "I turned 30 years old and grew up" then?
