That's a good point. It might have been better to introduce a negative react option, so those who disagreed/disliked a post could show it.

Then again, I suppose those who get upset by unwanted grins would be just as upset by thumbs down.

Or a wee humpy face.Hmm

EmeraldShamrock000 · 10/06/2025 15:16

I miss it too, but understand the issue.
Maybe adding a thumbs down emoji, would help remove using the laughing emoji sarcastically.

I can't believe we're on page 4 of this thread and people are still just wading in saying "urrrrgh bring it baaack" did none of you read what someone wrote near the start of the thread that someone who was suicidal and posting for help got laughed at? As one of many examples of the problem? What is wrong with some of you? Do you just not care that a human being was feeling like that and got kicked anyway? People post on MN for all sorts of reasons and it's a source of support for many. The shitheads are the people who shouldn't be on the Internet, not the people who post in good faith looking for support.

MN is a community with its own rules, people kept breaking them, MN have taken away this means of breaking talk guidelines, deal with it.

Anyone who laughs at someone suicidal or in distress has no place in polite society. They shouldn't even have a place here on Mnet!

I'd rather @MNHQ got rid of the poster rather than the emoji.

Please bring back the laughing emoji

Seriously? Are you and your co-complainers sure you aren't taking offence where none was intended?

We don't have a 'care' or a 'sad' button. Like many others, I often send a heart to indicate concern, sympathy, that sort of thing. I do this because I know that being heard matters sometimes and I want to send a bit of love.

I refuse to stifle my empathy because some prickly sods are always looking to be offended.

If you read back you'll see I'm not a complainer,I merely pointed out the heart is being used instead. I don't think the laughing emoji should've been taken away. If people are so upset about someone being a twat on the Internet then they should close the lap top and go out for a walk.

ButteredRadish · 09/06/2025 22:44

I disagree, it’s only used to mock people. I’ve posted about some really sensitive, personal things and had laugh reactions. I fucking hate it. I left Facebook over people laughing at injured animals/children etc.

GarlicMile · 09/06/2025 22:39

Haha, @LarkAscendings 😉

LarkAscendings · 09/06/2025 22:10

GarlicMile · 09/06/2025 21:28

God, it always snarled "I'm baring my horrifying teeth at you" to me!

Grin Sorry

GarlicMile · 09/06/2025 21:28

LarkAscendings · 09/06/2025 21:19

Yes, somehow the MN original grin is ‘I’m laughing’ not ‘I’m laughing at you’

This is one of the reasons why long timers fought against reactions for such a long time, with good reason. This 1-2-1 thing was a compromise by MNHQ and it's worked out to be quite stupid, exactly like people said it would. But it was soooo important to make MN more like FB or twitter or whatever the fuck it's called now, or other sites. MN stood apart for so many good reasons.

Anyway.

Now that it's here, and some people love it so much, I do reckon it'd be best to make reactions public. I think it would like take out the sting of trolling a bit, somehow, and make it easier to ignore like you do with the saddos who laugh at everything on Facebook.

I agree that if it’s here it should be visible.

@Missj25, look at your post just now. You should see a little 'thanks' symbol 👏 underneath it. Only you can see that. If you click on it, it will tell you I sent it.

That's what they're complaining about, not the emojis you post in a reply.

Thankyou for explaining to me .. 😊

I’m going to sound probably really stupid here , but can someone explain to me please
All the emojis are on this , aren’t they ?
I always see them ..
I’m lost 🤷🏻‍♀️

😂 They get even more upset over facial expressions that only they can see. Bless them (or something).

My facial expressions while reading Mumsnet probably lean heavily towards 🤨🙄😏🥴 Just as well MN never gave us a full bank of reactions, eh.

I still prefer the original MN emoticons. ConfusedHmmGrin Dragon

SummertimeFeelingFine · 09/06/2025 08:21

Yes we're grown ups and most of the time I'm sure people do just ignore or report.

But very serious things are discussed here sometimes. It's not just fun and games; in those situations where MN is an individual's only support line, it's best if people don't have to deal with trolling when they've disclosed something awful or are discussing something very difficult, and putting the onus on them to report it after the fact is the wrong way around.

It's really not that essential to be able to laugh at a post in the grand scheme of things.

Yes, adults surely don’t need facile ‘reactions’.

ErrolTheDragon · 09/06/2025 08:52

I don’t miss it in the slightest, but then it didn’t really work on the app anyway. Just generated annoying notifications that someone had ‘reacted’ without saying which reaction until I disabled that.
Don’t bring it back unless it’s public and fully works on the apps.

SummertimeFeelingFine · 09/06/2025 08:41

No, it was used to ridicule people, i would use it to acknowledge a funny post but too many didn't.

Shame but as in life, a minority ruin it for the many.
