Ideally we would like to actually go out for the day somewhere for my birthday as we have young children ourselves. Its not until autumn, the child is going to be nearly 2. Church and function afterwards. They are not religious in any way.

Omg how dare they you must report them and their dastardly red flags

Motherofacertainage · 05/06/2025 22:38

Unless it's a significant birthday - and even then only if you've already booked a huge do and invited them - then they won't have given it a second thought. YABU. An adult's birthday can be celebrated another time or even at the christening. Or if you really can't compromise on that just decline the invite. How many of your in laws were you expecting at your birthday celebrations???

StupidTrolleyThing · 05/06/2025 22:38

I'd be over the moon!

DonningMyHardHat · 05/06/2025 22:38

You don’t need a full day to celebrate an adult birthday.

Cnidarian · 05/06/2025 22:38

Some of these responses are hilarious!

Is it a significant birthday?

Didn’t expect to find the centre of the universe of Mumsnet, but here we are.

I rarely find a ‘line’ on here that I plan to steal but I’m absolutely having this.

Congratulations on your 9th birthday!

Surely it must be @OneZingyKhakiSnake's 10th birthday to be making such a fuss - double digits Yay!

#growup

My beautiful niece got married on my birthday - I thought it was a lovely way to spend the day! She wished me happy birthday and I told her it was my best birthday ever 🥰

Just have your birthday celebration the day after or before. It's really not the end of the world!

PinkSwatch · 05/06/2025 22:34

You know what I'm doing on my birthday this year? Working! Maybe I should start a thread about how unfair my employer is for forcing me to work on my birthday. Hmm

IReallyLoveItHere · 05/06/2025 22:34

Does bil/sil know your birthday? I've been with dh nearly 30 years, I bet my siblings don't know actual date.

But they will have had limited dates and just chose one. If you're close as a family go and do your birthday another day. If you're not close just say you already have plans for your birthday.

AsburyPark · 05/06/2025 22:33

Don’t see how you can be bothered by this to be honest. My daughter’s christening was on my Dad’s birthday, and come to think of it my nephew’s christening was on my 21st. And that’s nephew through my sister, not an in law.

It’s a non issue, most churches I know of only do christenings once or twice a month so it really restricts the available dates to hold them.

TunnocksOrDeath · 05/06/2025 22:33

You need to write to the relevant bishop, and ask him/her to instruct all clergy in the diocese to require written proof that there are no clashing family events before they agree to book-in any services for hatches, matches, or dispatches.

TY78910 · 05/06/2025 22:33

Do they actually know it’s your birthday? I don’t remember all of my DHs family members birthdays off by heart… I work it out closer to the time. Also, I don’t think you pick a specific christening date per se, it’s through the availability of the church. And there’s only so many Sundays you can ‘pick’ from 🙄🙄🙄

Empress13 · 05/06/2025 22:33

Oh please 🙄 I’m sure you can celebrate the day after. How would you feel if your sibling didn’t attend your child’s christening? Grow up

Vaxtable · 05/06/2025 22:32

So don’t go to the christening amd go out as planned for your birthday

Thedownstream · 05/06/2025 22:32

I think people are being a bit harsh here OP. I am aware of the dates of all my in laws birthdays and I wouldn’t book another family event on any of those dates. This said I’d suck it up and go rather than make it an issue (but I’m a people pleaser).

Congratulations on your 9th birthday!

I thought more 4th

WimpoleHat · 05/06/2025 22:30

This sort of thing is irritating, but it’s not the end of the world - and it is only a day. As others have said, I’d go for the sake of family harmony and “do” the birthday celebrations on another day.

(Damn that missing whatsit)

minnienono · 05/06/2025 22:29

Your birthday would not have even come into their heads. They would have booked it when the church offered it - we only do baptisms once a month at my work.

RatOfTheHighway · 05/06/2025 22:29

…

tim curry how bout that GIF
BitOutOfPractice · 05/06/2025 22:28

Honestly? It wouldn’t bother me. And I'm A bit of a birthday princess. I’d enjoy the day with my family, and I’d celebrate my birthday another day.

Pinty · 05/06/2025 22:28

Does it really matter? Do adults feel the need to celebrate their birthdays? And if so do they have to do it on the actual day. Sorry I think this is a non issue.
Also perhaps the sister in law didn't event realise it was your birthday, I don't remember the dates of my in laws birthdays.
