Angry about lenient sentence for murder of elderly man in park

7 years for the boy and three for the girl. This country is pathetic sometimes. A man lost his life while innocently walking his dog. Too sad

This was a pre-planned attack- I am staggered that they got away with murder. The sentence needs referring . It is beyond comprehension that the punishment is so low. 7 years? he will be’out’ in 4 and at 18 he will be even more dangerous. She should also have a locked away rehabilitation sentence. It is so wrong that these feral monsters are treated so leniently because of their backgrounds-they still know right from wrong, they just think they can do as they want with no/few consequences.

GCAcademic · 06/06/2025 09:25

It's absolutely disgusting. That poor man and his poor family. What an insult to them. As if they haven't suffered enough.

Compare that sentence to that of the woman serving 17 years in prison for killing a man who was in the process of sexually assaulting her.

AmberKoala · 06/06/2025 09:22

I agree!

Sunrae28 · 06/06/2025 09:21

I’ve just started a thread about Robert Price aswell very lenient sentences . I’ve contacted MP for Dagenham to raise the concern and request a safeguarding review is done for this poor man

Meadowfinch · 06/06/2025 09:17

I suppose the good things are they will be removed from whoever has been their key (loathsome) influences up until now, and have allowed them to develop into such vile creatures.

They will be separated which will only be a good thing. If there is to be any chance of rehabilitation, it has to start now.

Yes, an 80 year old is far less able to defend themselves, or recover. Hence his death.

One thing that resonated with me is that the boy reportedly liked to maintain a 'hard man' image.

Exactly how 'hard' do you need to be to brutally attack an 80yo?

Ultimately they were (are) both children, and children don’t just appear in the world as murderers - these children are the products of their families and upbringings. Is it right or just to punish children and young people with a sentence of a lifetime in jail, when they never stood a chance themselves and were very likely acting out the dysfunction and trauma they’d known their whole lives? 7 years is a significant period of time for the older boy to be rehabilitated, so whilst it may seem like a very short sentence if you’re thinking of it in the terms of adult sentencing, it’s half again of his lifetime to become a different person.

They are old enough to know killing someone is wrong. Stuff their upbringing, I'm fed up of it being used as an excuse for scroats to do what they want.

Its right to punish something so henious, no matter what their backgrounds. Its right to keep them away from society to protect others and show others of the conseuences.

It doesnt mean their mitgating factors are ignored, they are supported and treated while incarcerated, likely hopefully having therapy and victim restoration type work

But it doesnt take away there has to be consequences.

Are you saying an elderly persons life is worth more than a younger persons? If anything surely it’s worth less, the man was 80 so probably didn’t have many years left anyway. I’m not saying that makes it okay or less horrific, but are you really saying they should have got longer because the man was elderly than they would have if they’d killed a 20 year old, 40 year old, 60 year old?

Surprised that almost 10% have voted so far that YABU.

Wow.

Well I'm glad I don't know those people.

Would you be so liberal and forgiving if it was your frail father? We are all products of our environment. They have it in them to be evil. It’s their nature not how they’ve been nurtured. You are right though that their parents should be held to account also. Remove them all from society.

The sentence should be harsher because he was more vulnerable than a young, fit person would be.

He might not have had a lot of years left, we'll never know. But neither would a young person with a life limiting illness, doesn't mean it's less serious to kill them.

FastnetLundyRockall · 05/06/2025 19:27

The decision to charge manslaughter and not murder is shocking. I really feel for the family and can’t imagine how I wouldn’t be utterly furious if it was my relative. As an aside - he had such a nice smile in photos, it’s heartbreaking.

I don’t really think it’s a YABU / YANBU sort of discussion, because there’s so much nuance that I doubt anyone thinks that anything about this case is “reasonable.”

kinkytoes · 05/06/2025 19:23

Absolutely dreadful. This is not justice.

They might be children but they are capable of such horror I'm not sure that actually makes a difference 😔

Tennistote · 05/06/2025 19:23

As a Sikh woman who has experienced being called a f P* more than once in my lifetime I’m properly pissed off at the sentencing. Trust me we know when someone is being racist or not.
Just like in the wake of 9/11 when my turban wearing father used to get called Bin-Laden when going about his work and minding his own business. We know.
This feral pair should bloody rot in the slammer. Justice has not been done today.

It's more about vulnerability surely. He wouldn't have been able to defend himself like someone younger might have.

That is a horrible post. An old man's life is worth less? Really?

No, of course not - that’s not what I said.

I’m asking why if their (younger) ages are used as a reason to see them as vulnerable, and therefore less culpable, why isn’t the victim’s age (elderly) also taken into account and used as an aggravating factor, given he was frail and unable to properly defend himself.

weathervane1 · 05/06/2025 19:18

The girl didn't get three years in custody. She actually got given a three-year rehabilitation order and a six-month curfew ... which makes it even worse.

GreenCandleWax · 05/06/2025 19:16

HornyHornersPinkyWinky · 05/06/2025 19:06

Exactly - these are not wide eyed innocent children. They targeted him previouly with racist abuse, and the boy deliberately beat an old man to death, while the girl filmed it on her phone while laughing.

There’s something very wrong with these young people, and I don’t think a few years locked away is going to cure that.

How can the boy's actions possibly classed as manslaughter"? A more clear-cut example of deliberate murder would be hard to imagine.

I find it strange that the offenders are given mitigation due to their young ages, but there isn’t the same acknowledgement of the victim’s elderly age/ frailty and corresponding vulnerability.
Surely that should be an aggravating factor.
