Angry about lenient sentence for murder of elderly man in park

7 years for the boy and three for the girl. This country is pathetic sometimes. A man lost his life while innocently walking his dog. Too sad

I notice that the people who advocate for "lock 'em up on a deserted island and throw away the key" never seem to be volunteering to work as an officer in said prisons. Sometimes I think prison officers — who have, I think, the hardest job in the world — find themselves tainted by association with their charges.

But of course, what those people usually mean is "I wish this murderer/rapist could just be executed, to save us all a lot of hassle". And when you ask them about miscarriages of justice, hands are waved vigorously, because nobody thinks that they might be Peter Sullivan one day.

Peter Sullivan has murder conviction quashed after 38 years in jail

Hearing told that DNA evidence found at the scene of Diane Sindall’s murder was not that of the 68-year-old

What would you choose as a 'heavy punishment' that isn't jail? 🤔

kinkytoes · 11/06/2025 18:54

I disagree. Ignore the low level crimes with slaps on wrists and larger crimes will only increase.

Smaller offences like what?

Plenty of people dodge prison already.

Stuff like possession of weed/ drugs. Weed especially is the first one I thought of. Drunk and disorderly/ guys fighting each other. Low level criminal damage. Shoplifting. Low level fraud / employers stealing paltry amounts off large companies.

im not saying these people shouldn’t be heavily punished but leave the jails for murderers, pedos, abusers and and rapists

sprinklesandshines · 11/06/2025 15:52

Where did I say that? The best thing to do would be do stop jailing for smaller offences thus there’d be room for killers

OK @sprinklesandshines let's have it your way and let murderers free to kill again. Nice 👍👍

Yes and those in prison will die at a slower rate, living in a protected bubble as they do. Even if it was the same rate, the number of wronguns outside prison doesn't simply stay level as the population grows. And it's growing fast!

Build prisons in the middle of nowhere for all I care. Better that than have to live among known killers.

You do realise people tend to own the land in the middle of nowhere it’s not a free for all. Prisons also don’t tend to be built rurally anymore as families/ visitors can struggle with access.

sprinklesandshines · 11/06/2025 09:18

People die all the time including criminals. My point still stands there is not enough money to build more and many people have campaigned against prisons being built near them. You can’t have it both ways

This is no reason not to build more prisons.

You can't expect the population to grow and the number of criminals to stay the same.

There are so many reasons why they can’t do this, not just funding but most people probably including yourself not wanting to live next to prisons/ worried about safety.

Are you saying an elderly persons life is worth more than a younger persons? If anything surely it’s worth less, the man was 80 so probably didn’t have many years left anyway. I’m not saying that makes it okay or less horrific, but are you really saying they should have got longer because the man was elderly than they would have if they’d killed a 20 year old, 40 year old, 60 year old?

This is the most disturbing thing I've heard on Mumsnet and I've read countless disturbing things in here but this one takes the cake.
Somehow, I can imagine you dancing with glee if a loved one who is elderly is murdered and defending the murderer with whole heart behind doors (if there is inheritance in the equation).

Just as an update, our local MP (also MP for the area where the murder took place) has appealed to the AG for a sentencing review of an unduly lenient sentence due to the judge not deeming this to be a racially motivated attack.

Too right. Well done to that MP 👏🏼

I wonder what the response would have been if a couple of Asian kids had killed a white elderly man? No doubt the Daily Mail et al would have been whipping the Reform lot into a frenzy…

What response: you mean the comments of disgust on here? So what's your point, other than bringing Reform to the table, because to do so is in vogue?

Here’s hoping the undue leniency of the sentence will be appealed and will be successful.

Please don’t tell me those 2 don’t know right from wrong.
I despair at what’s happening in the world. 🥲

I think it’s dreadful that the sentences are too short.

I don’t care how old the children are. If they are able to murder someone and laugh about filming the attack, they should have got at least 25 years for the lad. If adults did that, he would have got 25 years.

I do hate racism.

they said it wasn’t racially motivated whatever that means, doesn’t make it any better

Yup well the prisons are full.

That’s no excuse. Anyone who thinks evil scum should be living amongst everyday people should offer to have this scum living in their own home.

ButterCrackers · 08/06/2025 06:24

sprinklesandshines · 08/06/2025 00:39

That was never going to happen for two kids so young. Bear in mind Ian Huntley got min 40 years for a double child murder.

Edited

An absolute disgrace. This scum needs putting away for life.

They should have got life sentences or close to it. Maybe 50 years.
