Secretly gutted that DH isn't going away for a fortnight 🤭

DH was offered some short-term work abroad - two-weeks in the middle east.

It looked like a good offer - good money for easy work.

DH had all but decided to go, and I was secretly starting to look forward to a couple of weeks at home alone.

Yesterday he decided that he doesn't want to go.

I tried to gently persuade DH to reconsider but he's definitely staying put. I was surprised at how disappointed I am not to get my two-weeks home alone 😒

I know I am BU. It's totally DH's choice. But I needed to vent a little bit.

My DH has always gone on holiday for a week or 2 every year and I really look forward to it. I feel like I can be myself and have no one to bend round. Don't worry it's fairly normal!

CrocsNotDocs · 07/06/2025 23:43

I love DH but I also love it when he works away. Being able to park in the middle of the car port, having the bed and en suite to myself, not having 2/3 of each washing load being his enormous shirts and pants ( he’s a big man) and having a glass of wine midweek without suffering his mildly disappointed teetotaller look.

He’s currently working from home a lot and not working away. I was home all day last week and mowed the acreage, put the palm fronds on the bonfire, mopped the kitchen and prepped dinner and ironed all school uniforms and the two times he emerged from his office were the two times I had just sat down with a cuppa and my iPad.

30k! What does he do and how do I get that job?!?!

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 07/06/2025 14:23

Jesus - how rich are you that you can afford to turn down 30k?

BleedingLikeABastard · 07/06/2025 14:17

@GreenOtter I've never lived alone either and that's partly why I enjoy DH being away - to slip into another kind of life temporarily.

£30k! Unless you are already very wealthy, that is a stupid amount of money to turn down.

We don't need the money but, yes, I agree.

I have pointe this out. Repeatedly.

That would nark, I love it when Dh goes away. He's away for 4 days to Portugal later this month, can't wait.

GreenOtter · 07/06/2025 02:31

OP, I would feel the same. I have a DH that rarely leaves the house.

My big regret is that I have never lived on my own and I think this is why I also would love to experience a week or two where DH is away somewhere. Even though we have DC and I work full-time, it would be fun to experience a different kind of routine where I have my own space.

One of my work colleagues talks about her DH being away for weeks at a time and she excitedly talks about when he returns and their plans to spend time together. She looks forward to this and I just can’t believe how jealous I am. I have no idea how this would feel as I see DH all the bloody time.

neverendinglauaundry · 06/06/2025 21:14

Yes it's great when they go away isn't it? Mine was away so much when my kids were little, and I wanted him to help with bed and bath times now they are older he's here ALL THE TIME.

Sunshineismyfavourite · 06/06/2025 16:28

haha I'm with you OP I'd have been devastated if he changed his mind! I'd have had my TV show/films to watch list and my snacks and dinner menus sorted already! Bliss. I love my DH but as some pps have said I've never really lived alone either so it would be lovely to have our house to myself for a couple weeks. And I'd have been excited to see him when he got home too. The £30k would be nice too of course!

My DH & Oldest was away over Christmas to visit family overseas. Me and youngest had a ball. I did miss them, but also enjoyed 1 on 1 time with the youngest.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 06/06/2025 21:05

As you can tell from my screen name, I don't live with a man 😄

I love it tbh - aside from the lack of sex and companionship, I love watching what I want on tv, not worrying about being dainty or sexy, eating in bed!

Yanbu to be a bit miffed

Sometimes, I just cook different things because I want something different to what DH and DD want. They're both properly carnivorous and I don't always want meat, so I'll do two meals.

I don't want to miss out on what I want just cos DH doesn't like vegetables 🤣

Exactly

Family eating is always a compromise, isn’t it? Some of my faves are things the other two would groan at, and vice versa. Of course for a night everyone should be able to choose, but imagine choosing every night for a fortnight!!

No I eat what I want 😂🤷🏼‍♀️ I’ve seen posts like “I love when DH goes away as I can just eat beans on toast” FFS we are only here once, eat whatever the hell you like.

OhMehGoddess · 06/06/2025 21:03

I love my husband endlessly. But I do also love it when he works away and I just sit on the couch with the cat when the kids are in bed/upstairs and watch shit TV. He can work away for months on end and then only see him weekends. It really does not bother me having the kids myself. We follow the same routine.

Newname71 · 06/06/2025 20:45

A work colleague was complaining her DP was working away for a week. DH and I have been together for 27 years. I’d fucking love him to work away for a week (or 3) 😂 I’m off to a festival for 3 days next week so he’ll get some alone time. He won’t go anywhere (boring git) so I never get home alone time.

itsgettingweird · 06/06/2025 20:42

I hear you!

Im a LP to my ds - have been since he was 13 months and is now 20!!!!

He competes abroad sometimes or goes on camps for his sport - everyone says how much I must miss him.

Im like ….. yeah 😏.

But as much as I miss his brilliant dry wit and him as a person I actually love the break. When anyone asks me what I have planned for his absense the answer is nothing!

I enjoy the time just being me. Not mum. Not carer. Just me.

I sometimes wonder how strongly I should communicate the truth 🫣😂

He has a physical disability and autism.

Totally understandable OP, being alone in the house or even with kids but no other adults is amazing.
The posts I don’t understand are the ones where people can’t eat what they like when their husband is home. Why!?

Lol....hands on changed to handsome....had to edit that...I think he is handsome but I'm sure others wouldn't.. I just seen a kind man with kind eyes who cares and loves his family and friends making him very handsome to me

Londonrach1 · 06/06/2025 17:05

I love my dh and he is amazing dad and husband and very very hands on. But he had to go away for a couple of days for work...he really didn't want to but did too ..it was abroad....my parents said not a problem we come down I was noooo.... I had a relaxing couple of days and yes I missed him as did dd. He came back refreshed having only had to go to the conference and chat to colleagues...all who seemed to be like him in bed by 9-10... He what's app In his hotel room which was amazing by looks of the video. Lovely to have some time apart and I appreciated him more and I also got to read a book. Sadly no more are planned until next year but op encourage him to go x

Yep, I would be gutted too!! Mine was supposed to be out tonight but his plans got cancelled and I am quietly seething!

For 30K, I’d drive him to the Middle East myself!

Crunchymum · 06/06/2025 14:47

But it was just shy of a year's costs/expenses so would've been nice, especially for two weeks of pretty easy work😐😐

I'm unclear as to what a years worth of cost / expenses is? Do you have a ballpark?

I'm not particularly money orientated but if two weeks working abroad was going to offer our family significant ££££'s then I'd suck it up (or I'd be very forcefully pushing my DP to suck it up!)

Wow yes I agree - OP and DH must be very well off to be able to just turn this down cos he doesn’t fancy it. I’d snap someone’s hands off for that kind of easy money (I want a new campervan!)
