Sophie Ellis-Bextor concert. Ugh

Saw her last week. Good fun. I missed the opportunity to wear my glittery Christmas dress though.

We all know she has legs that go on for days and likes to show them off (so would I if I had them!). At various points during the show she had to bend over (dropped something and so on). Every single time, at least one man wolf whistled. One man started and then others thought it was OK to join in.

I mean, really? They weren't sat near me or I would have said something. It pissed me right off. We were there to sing and dance to a bit of disco and grotty men insist on making their thoughts knoen about how attractive she is. As if anyone cares.

Most of the audience were 50+ which somehow made it even more grim.

Yuk just yuk.

It's all about context. This is a staged bit iof fun. She's very much.aware and very in control

I've heard it all now. Perhaps they should be make to take a fucking i.q. test before they're allowed to buy a ticket for a gig. No, sorry, you're disqualified, from this and similar cheesy disco tinged music gigs, for being too fick. This thread really is the gift that keeps on giving. 😅

50 year old heterosexual men at a S E B concert seems weird in itself.

Last year SEB was touring with T'Pau and the Human League. It was a brilliant gig and absolutely my 50+ DH came too. In fact, he bought the tickets.

SEB isn't really our sort of music but I have to say she was great at getting the crowd up and dancing, and having a good time. Carol Decker got wolf whistled once and she just paused, looked out at the crowd and said: 'Really?'

Fucking hell. Women really have no hope if this is the call coming from inside the house.

She doesn't 'perform with her knickers on show'. She wears sequinned leotards, short dresses etc, because she has fucking amazing legs and by time time we hit our mid 40s most of us know how to dress to accentuate our best features. She wears tinsel capes, sequins and glitter eyeshadow - classic dressing for the straight male gaze obviously 🙄

Even if she did wear just her pants though that doesn't make old fashioned sexual harassment or 'she was asking for it' comments ok.

Absolutely this. But she is selling a product. Disco is a very camp, OTT genre. Ellis Bextor is a disco performer and conforms to that aesthetic simply because that's the coding audiences of that music have bought into since its infancy in the 70s. People buy music or film on the basis of genre, and its 'dress code' if you can call it that is glittery, OTT, revealing, and uber-kitsch. Compare Kylie, ABBA, Alcazar: even the Bee Gees with their silly chest medallions and super-tight pants (who ofc escape criticism being men). Yes, she 'knows what she's doing' in the sense that she knows her target audience and plays the game accordingly. It's not a case of 'she was asking for it' - incidentally disco is far from my cup of tea and I think for her age she looks terrific.

The sexism on this thread is equally OTT - so much so that much of it probably isn't genuine but a regurgitation of the usual incel vibe found elsewhere on the net, like Reddit. I suspect half the posters on this thread are wind-up merchants, here to tell women off for any refusal to pander to the Mighty Penis.

These days they're common MN parlace and tediously predictable.

There's always a dipropionate amount of women on here who seem to suffer sexual harassment every time they leave the door! Every interaction with a man seems to leave them feeling vulnerable and harrased!

Do women really like being whistled at like they’re a dog?
I’ve always hated it, never understood how it could a stranger whistling at me in the street was meant to be a compliment. It always felt like a way to intimidate or embarrass me.

It is. It's harassment and is intended to put women into our 'place'; to humiliate.

As ever on these threads there's a constant berating of women with the presence of mind to object. The usual schtick is that they should lighten up, that they're 'man haters', and that it's all the fault of feminists that the poor darling men will soon be afraid even to approach or talk to women (good). Nothing about my screen/book earphones in any way conveys the message that I crave the company of male strangers, but it doesn't seem to put them off. If anything, the fact that interaction is unwelcome positively encourages them.

It isn't a 'compliment'. At best it's a pain in the arse and at worst, harassment. Aren't there trad wives subs on Reddit that would be better suited to this kind of antediluvian BS?

And frankly, anyone who feels the need for complete strangers' validation of their personal appearance is in no place to pontificate to others.

She can wear exactly what she wants, but she was also fully aware of the fact that wearing a very short skirt and bending over would illicit the exact reaction she was looking for and encouraging!

This ^ she's been a performer for years & yes sex appeal & showing off is apart of that.

If it was something that bothered her she wouldn't have kept bending over either so while I 100% agree it would bother me I think on some level it's apart of the show isn't it ?

If it had been a women on the train who'd just dropped her bag & had to keep bending over to pick something up while a bunch of men wolf whistled id be more enraged

Despite what you might be led to believe on MN a lot of women love a wolf whistle and still regard it as a harmless show of attraction. People are very naive to think SEB’s show wasn’t designed this way.

MrsEMR · 05/06/2025 16:25

Was at her concert a couple of weeks ago. No wolf whistles at all, just a singalong dance-athon. So definitely not a set up by her stagehands or other support staff. Also her husband is in the backing band. Wolf whistles are a form of harassment, have always been.

Strange that we never hear about shoplifters and burglars being "provoked" by alll the tempting goods in the shops or people's housing.

"my client was in John Lewis and when he saw the tempting arrray of TVs he did what any red blooded male might well want to do, he just helped himself. One could almost say that the display was flaunting itself!

Are you seriously comparing stealing a TV with the natural instincts of reproduction? Perhaps you think men go window shopping for a new woman too?

rosemarble · 05/06/2025 16:11

Well, with Murder on the Dance Floor as the current ear worm I think I'll leave you to it. 💃👠

I agree sexual harassment is diabolical. On the other hand the day heterosexual men stop casting their eyes over attractive woman there will be a blue moon in the sky. It's a natural instinct, especially if they are dressed provocatively.

I miss being whistled at 🤷🏼‍♀️

I don't I always loathed it. Was happy to become invisible but still not invisible enough to prevent me being sexually assaulted by a stranger on my way home from work. I was 62. A lot of men just hate women and see them as pieces of meat. In many ways I think it is even worse now as the technology is enabling abuse that wasn't possible in the pre-internet era.

What about women admiring a good looking man?

Just how is the human race meant to continue if we don't have attraction?

Attraction doesn’t have to involve sexual harassment.

Its not difficult to express your attraction to
someone respectfully.

It is abit over the top now.. I remember years ago (teen years) me and my friend were ogling a scaffolder who was working opposite her kitchen window.. We made a massive poster that read “Time for a Diet Coke break, wink wink” He loved it!
Also at a Take That concert a woman had a sign (they read it out to the crowd) that said “Howard, I think of you when I shag my fat husband” Again, he looked like he fou this funny rather than take offence.

A diva man held up a sign saying “Sophie, I think of you when I shag my fat wife”, it would be rightly considered outrageous.

Who suggested that we shouldn't have attraction?

Those men want to be careful. Didn't she once murder someone on the dancefloor?

She denies it of course but there is lots of evidence if you Google.

Sam Smith doesn't identify as a man.

I've never seen the term 'dressed provocatively' being used for a man. I've only ever seen it used as a vague or direct criticism of women - mostly to imply that they're sluts or that they're trying to cause/have caused themselves to be harassed or assaulted.
