Why do people get so excited over a jacket potato cart?

I see a lot of viral videos on fb and one of them is from the spud man. Now I like a jacket potato sometimes, but that still doesn’t mean I would camp out over night, or start queuing from 5.30 for a damn potato!! Even if the first order is free.

Why????

Most cinemas seem to turn a blind eye to taking in your own sweets etc, it was an actual ‘ crime ‘ years ago , but I don’t think they care as much now. So I’m told anyway! Nothing been on that I want to watch for a long time at any cinema

murasaki · 04/06/2025 14:09

People who can't last two hours without a snack are very odd.

the80sweregreat · 04/06/2025 14:01

I haven’t been to the cinema for many years , but I can imagine the eating and drinking must be annoying. Most popcorn is rank at these multi plex locations, but it’s just a thing isn’t it ? Must eat it and it must be even more expensive now!

Yes, what is that ‘plasticy ‘ cheese you get on tacos and nanchos and has a funny smell ?
I admit I like proper cheddar cheese on things.

I have no idea I imagine it's a packet mix of sorts.

Why do people get so excited about cinema popcorn, why are they willing to pay £5 for a box of salted popcorn that costs literally pence in ingredients? You can buy a 500g bag of popping corn kernels in Sainsburys for £1.10, which would make you dozens and dozens of cinema boxes of popcorn worth.

I've never understood why people can't watch a film without shoving over priced crap into themselves.

the80sweregreat · 04/06/2025 13:54

It’s because when you go out ( or out out) people suddenly forget that’s it’s a fiver here or there and want the whole rip off experience ( myself included sometimes )
my late parents never ever ate out, not even a cup of tea from a stall! They didn’t think you needed any of this in your life!

I think people see it as part of the cinema experience I don't like popcorn but I will buy nachos with the plastic cheese sauce 😋 it's absolute rubbish but I do like it,

Some of the ‘ spud u like ‘ jackets in the 80s probably did taste like those white cups you get the tea in! Lol

Social media innit. Plus, all the clubs have closed down, nobody drinks anymore and noone can find a partner. So taking selfies and posting potatoes on insta is the new rock n roll.

Made me laugh 😆
Maybe this spud man should do a version of ‘ the monster mash ‘ for tic tok and try to break into the charts ( or whatever it’s called these days )
( hit parade?)

I miss Spud-U-Like as it used to be. The spuds they sell nowadays are tiny; you get a crap wooden knife that won't cut the skin, and a very small choice of filings. Bring back 1980s Spud-U-Like.

I remember many a day sitting bored in spud-u-like with my mum and her mate in the 80s.
I used to get told off for chewing the polystyrene cups. I remember the taste of those more than I do that of the potatoes?!

lalaloopyhead · 04/06/2025 13:42

I love a jacket potato, however the tiktok videos of Spudman etc do nothing for me - way too much butter, mashing and slopping going!

Justtryingthis · 04/06/2025 13:42

Ds1 is largely made of Spudmans Jacket Potatoes as I worked in a shop opposite his stall when I was pregnant in 2003 and had one EVERY DAY!
May explain the 4 stone I put on..

People are idiots if they’re spending £12 for a jacket potato.

go to eg an Arena show and wonder why people pay £25 for a Dominos pizza!

Catandsquirrel · 04/06/2025 13:36

Messing*

Catandsquirrel · 04/06/2025 13:36

Ah the one on Fargate in Sheffield was great. Not sure if it's still there. They were the size of landmines. No social media, no fuss. Just hangover cures without messing up

Tarkan · 04/06/2025 13:35

I don’t get it either but then I’m not a huge fan of potatoes. I’ll have a baked potato at home but it’s usually covered in so much butter and fillings you don’t notice the potato. Tacos though, I would get really excited over a taco van. 😁

Gullible idiots, waiting hours and over paying for a basic jacket potato … because someone on Tik-Tok told them to.

What a bunch of Sheep

Oh Dubai chocolate is everywhere right now isn’t it?!!

I think he would probably film my order with disgust….one potato, do not mash the inside please!!! No butter, no salt, no pepper. In fact no toppings at all, apart from cheese but I want the cheese separate cos I like to have a nice forkful of cold cheese and one fork of potato

I’d vote YABU just for the no butter. No wonder you don’t understand the love for jacket spuds when you’re ruining yours Wink

I'm really surprised that a few other people in his town haven't tried to capitalise on it and do a rival business 'spudbloke' 'potato princess' etc. if people really are travelling for miles for such a basic dish?

I reckon he must be money laundering or something and he's bribing the council to stop competition?!

In his early days on TikTok he would always promote a local sweet shop

roundtable · 04/06/2025 13:05

When times are economically hard people like an affordable luxury. It's just an extension of that imo. Lots of people like to be part of a tribe and food is a talking point and social. Better than obsessing over Heather shimmer like I did because it was the in thing and it didn't suit me at all!

the80sweregreat · 04/06/2025 13:04

I only like jackets done in the oven really.
I think you can tell the difference to those that are microwaved or even my trusty air fryer they tasted a bit odd.
