Would you take your 6 year old to this musical?

It’s Grease! She loves musicals and would love the songs and dances but not sure if some of the themes would be too mature (I think all that would go over her head).

YABU: no I wouldn’t take my 6 year old
YANBU: yes I would take my 6 year old

I personally wouldn't take a 6 year old to a musical no

Why on earth not?

Whatafustercluck · 04/06/2025 08:18

Dd is 8 and I took her to see Grease two years ago. She absolutely loved it! Adult themes/ speak went over her head (and actually, there's probably more of it in the film version) and she knew all the songs by heart. No way would I have taken ds when he was that age (totally different type of child!) but if your daughter likes the songs and dances and is likely to stay entertained for 2 hours (which is a long time to sit still), I'd absolutely recommend it. Dd got a bit fidgety, but easily remedied by snacks!

Take her. A lot of the more mature content will go straight over her head. I only got the true meaning of "Grease lightning" a few years ago and I'm early 50s 🤦‍♂️😁

Well children go to Pantomime’s and there is a lot of innuendo ! They still love it and the adults are entertained 🤷‍♀️

There is, and I cringe for the cast and find it utterly pathetic. I know pantos aren't meant to be the pinnacle of wit but surely "ooooh, that's funny because it's a bit sex related" "there's a joke for the dads, wink wink" can be dropped by now.

I just avoid the theatres we know put on those types of Pantos, which are usually the bigger more expensive ones with more celebrities, so I accept that I'm in the minority and clearly lots of people disagree.

While I'm on one, one of my massive bugbears with children's films is when they throw in loads of obvious jokes / references clearly just for the adults. It's just cynical attempts to capture a bigger audience and ticket sales by trying to get the parents to like it too so they take the kids to see it /put it on at home. But the really good shows don't need that. Bit irrelevant to the Grease question I know, sorry OP!

I'm in the 'why is it great the Sandy changes herself to win the guy?' camp. Not my idea of a happy ending.

I think the sex references would go over a 6 year old's head but then why knowingly take her to see something that goes over her head? I'm not sure that's enjoyable for kids, lots of stuff they supect is 'grown up' and which they don't understand.

To be fair - he changes himself as well. I've always understood it as a show of commitment. He goes all 'preppy', tries to join sports teams, dresses up nicely etc. And she shows that she has a bit of a wild side.

NJLX2021 · 04/06/2025 03:16

Yes - it was one of my favorite things around that age. I had an old CD of it, that I used to play... then my parents rented the movie for me. Great memories.

I had no idea what it was all about.

Watched it later as an adult, and finally understood the plot.

Cool car, teenage boys and girls doing things. a sleepover, shes nice, shes nasty, aww they get together, wow look at that fairground. That was about my understanding.

Take her, and then sing all the songs on the way home.

Tiswa · 03/06/2025 23:32

Grease the musical is different to Grease the movie as well - fine if you hadn’t seen the film but can be jarring if you love the film.

I think 6 is a bit young for some of the references (although I did take Dd to Mamma Mia at that age and that does have similar) and is also I think a little darker than the movie

MummoMa · 03/06/2025 22:26

It will all probably go over her head. Having said that, Grease was banned for my kids for a long time due to the message that it's good to change who you are to fit in. I've never been one for conformity. When they were older and we could talk about this theme, they were allowed to watch it.

Needmorelego · 03/06/2025 22:23

The stage version isn't great. There's a lot of non singing dialogue which slows it down.
I saw it with my daughter who was then about 15. She's obsessed with musicals but didn't like Grease.
There was a girl of about 8 sat near us who kept saying "it's boring" and "can we go yet".

No musical? At all?? Why?
my DD was 4 when we when to see Cats followed over the next couple of years by the lion king, Annie and chitty chitty bang bang. She lived every one. Sat spellbound throughout.

ItWasntMyFault · 03/06/2025 22:22

I was 9 when it came out in the cinema - I loved it and was completely oblivious to the unsuitable bits.

sunflowersblooming · 03/06/2025 22:22

I went to see it recently (local society) and definitely would. The stage show is less adult than the film and the more adult themes are not as obvious either I don’t think. Lots of great songs and dancing!

PurpleThistle7 · 03/06/2025 22:20

I’ve taken my daughter to see many musicals and shows over the years - at that age anything dubious went over her head and now that she’s older (12) it’s a great way to encourage conversations about difficult conversations. We’ve read a lot of classic books together too with similar results.

smartarsey · 03/06/2025 22:20

I definitely would. It’s the music and dancing she will enjoy.

Pollyanna87 · 03/06/2025 22:15

I loved Grease as a child, the (massively) inappropriate parts just went over my head! I think it’s fine. I liked poodle skirts and Elvis etc, so I liked Grease.

JellyAnd · 03/06/2025 22:08

But nothing wrong with taking a 6YO to the theatre! I’d just probably pick something else this time and leave Grease until she’s a bit older.

JellyAnd · 03/06/2025 22:06

I think I’d leave it until a bit older. It’s got a lot of pretty overt sexual references and I don’t think you’d get away with them going over her head, if they did then she likely wouldn’t be following the story at all and I would worry then that she’d get bored.

My boy is almost 6 and I think would love it, if his love of high school musical is anything to go by, but the whole "guy has to act cool in front of his friends" thing just isn't a message I want to give him. (Or that girls should change for a boy!)

I don't think he'd necessarily pick up on it at the time as such, but it would still be adding to the stereotypes. And that's without even thinking about the lyrics and innuendos!

My boys have both seen it, they dont think like that about girls as I have taught them better than that and they know its just a show/film.

AllyDally · 03/06/2025 22:02

I went to see musicals from about the age of 3, I loved them and was able to sit through them without distracting people around me, same for my DS1, so a 6 yo who is interested will be fine. My DS2 absolutely no chance!

Grease the stage show is fine, its tamer than the film and anything inappropriate will go over her head. MN is so weird about this stuff.

Gundogday · 03/06/2025 22:02

Would she understand them or would they pass her by? Have you watched Grease the film? 🎦

ToffeePennie · 03/06/2025 22:02

Given that my 7 year old has been in Bonnie and Clyde (as young Clyde) and has been onstage since he was 2 weeks old it seems rude to deny a child the chance to see a fabulous musical.
all the adult themes go straight over their head, she will be watching it for the bright colours, cool music and pretty girls in fancy frocks, not the actual themes of the show.
both my children (even my autistic older son) know how to sit through a stage show.
We went to see SIX as a family and our next show is Les Mis.
