Judged for working only 30hours a week!

I work thirty hours a week, this is so I can care for my children before school and after as there are no after school activities or care available. I am constantly judged by others who make remarks like "alright for you part timer" or "well I work full time so don't have time for xyz" we have no family nearby and financially can afford this. It does at times feel like I'm not seen as doing anything of value! It's 7.5 hours less than what's considered full time!

I run my own business and I only work 30 (ish) hours. You can achieve a lot in that time.

Own it. Enjoy it! …. don’t be pressured into FT unless you want it, or need it.

Wethers121 · 02/06/2025 21:00

They would hate me, I only work two days a week. I think you need new friends. I don’t give a crap what other people think. My working pattern works for our family and frankly is no one else’s business

Starlightstarbright4 · 02/06/2025 20:58

I do 32 . I work for a national company anything 30 hours and above is considered f/t ..

honesty when I have done o/t by the time tax / national insurance and pension are taken out it is pointless.

suki1964 · 02/06/2025 20:57

Why are you letting other peoples comments bother you ?

I gave up full time work in 1999 - aged 34 - no kids

Worked as and when since. At the moment Im doing just 20 hours - suits me to the ground

Ive never claimed a penny in benefits so what I do, no one person can make judgement on

Just get on with your life and ignore other petty , jealous, narrow minded people

BrightLightTonight · 02/06/2025 20:55

But you are only working part time - so why does this upset you?

Gowlett · 02/06/2025 20:55

Who says these things? Is it people at work?
Nobody knows anything about my job at all…

Are you sure they judge you? if my son gets invited to a birthday party on a school holiday weekday from 11 to 1, my answer is “we can’t come, i work full time”. Similar for 10am coffee meetings, 3pm playdates etc.
Not judging, its a fact.
If school asks for people coming in at 3pm to help with something, that is ok for somebody not working or working parttime, but not me.
After school activities from 3:30 are ok for parttimers, but not me.
No judgement- you do you - but a fact.

I get this is a fact and i do agree that most likely people arent judgy.

But the way its phrased could sound a bit judgy by saying 'i can't, i work full time" instead of 'thats during my working hours'. Plenty of part timers cant do specific times. Not all part timers are available for 3.30 or whatever. There are also full timers who could do 10am coffee etc. They might do nights, or early/late shifts or weekends or split shifts. My mum was a full time nurse and did school pick up.

Ponderingwindow · 02/06/2025 20:52

People ask me all the time how many hours I work. I think they are hoping I will answer I have increased my hours since I don’t have a young child anymore. I earn quite well working part-time. Due to our individual circumstances my household still needs me part-time more than we need more money. My husband doesn’t feel put out by my hours like other people seem to be. He would be happier if I worked less, but understands why I won’t stop entirely.

unconditionalpurelove · 02/06/2025 20:50

Love, it's jealousy. You are not lazy, anything but. It's none of their business.

Pompompurin1 · 02/06/2025 20:43

I work 18 hours (have two primary school aged kids) and feel it’s too much !!! I think 30
plus All the rushing around, clubs , school drops off and pick ups etc must be very hard.

Youdontseehow · 02/06/2025 20:40

@layback just tell them your Only Fans account has really taken off so you can’t work more than 30 hours as you’re busy OFing 😁

zigazigaaaing · 02/06/2025 20:38

OP I can really relate to this. I felt like I was treated as a second class citizen at work when I did 30 hours, and also received comments like ‘enjoy your coffee whilst were working’ from make team members. It made me so angry as I’m sure it does you as in fact you are cramming a full time job in to less time and being far more efficient than many others, and then rushing around caring for children too which is a huge accomplishment. Like others have posted unfortunately a lot of the time as mothers we can’t win. My best advice is to not let others have the power to ruin your mood or day. You should be proud of what you’re doing. Also I’m fairly sure these comments are discriminatory and not allowed in the workplace, you can raise with your line manager or HR if they persist.

scarflove · 02/06/2025 20:37

I’m in a similar position and hate it but I am also convinced that if I was working full time the same people would judge me for another thing.

Mary46 · 02/06/2025 20:34

Im in a school so I get the comments too about the holidays!!

MsJinks · 02/06/2025 20:31

Just say ‘yes, it’s great - why don’t you do it?’ - tip from a teacher who constantly got comments about the long holidays!
Don’t think you have to explain yourself - you’re doing what works for you and your family, and it’s no one else’s business.

Bestfootforward11 · 02/06/2025 20:28

Sounds like it works for you and your family and someone always has something to say on mothers. I’d just ignore or say ‘Sorry, did you mean to be so rude?’ X

I do at times say I get paid a part time wage! It's like I'm seen as a lazy person, I do all child care as my husband works away. I'm either at work or with my children yet feel I'm judged for it.

Maybe they mean you are fortunate to not have to work ft

EleanorReally · 02/06/2025 20:18

work life balance is a good response

CandyCane457 · 02/06/2025 20:15

layback · 02/06/2025 19:35

I like the responses to reply with " it's great isn't it"

I fully agree with this!

Im a primary school teacher and am often at the receiving end of comments about how great my job must be, finishing at 3.30 every day (not true) and all the holidays etc, with no regard to how many hours we actually put in. When people used to make comments I’d start getting all defensive and telling them about all the hours I work etc, how holidays aren’t all our own and so on. Now I’ve learnt to let it go over my head and I reply and say “I know, it’s fantastic isn’t it, I’m so lucky to have such an easy job and so much free time…you should train up!” And I find this shuts people up so much faster and they don’t tend to say it again! They’re looking for a reaction and to goad you, so when you just agree with them about how great it is for you, they have nothing else to give.

onlybutter · 02/06/2025 20:14

I only work two days a week and have had these comments too. I always say to the "oh I wish I only worked 2 days a week" comments, you can! Book a meeting with the boss, request to drop your hours and 3/5ths of your salary like I did 🙃
Husband works long hours, all childcare and drop offs/pick ups for three very young children falls to me. So I also tell people "this is the easiest bit of my day, I've got the remainder of a 24 hour shift to pull once I get home. I would lose money if I worked anymore hours so I also tell people I would love to work more hours (lol I absolutely would not) but can't afford to even if I wanted to as it makes no financial sense.

Visun · 02/06/2025 20:12

Just agree that it's so great that you have a work/life balance and how happy you are. Rub their nose in it. Playfully/jokingly reply "ah, you're just jealous!"

Mary46 · 02/06/2025 20:10

Ignore them op. I do 15 hrs school bus assistant. I get odd jibe. I say ah its great yes the hours. Lol. People love to put you down.

JaninaDuszejko · 02/06/2025 20:06

The government considers 30h full time so tell them to fuck off.

Boysnme · 02/06/2025 20:05

I‘d love a 30 hour week. Enjoy it while you can and ignore anyone who mocks
you for it.
