Judged for working only 30hours a week!

I work thirty hours a week, this is so I can care for my children before school and after as there are no after school activities or care available. I am constantly judged by others who make remarks like "alright for you part timer" or "well I work full time so don't have time for xyz" we have no family nearby and financially can afford this. It does at times feel like I'm not seen as doing anything of value! It's 7.5 hours less than what's considered full time!

@layback , they are secretly jealous . Don’t sweat it. You’re good.

ReadingSoManyThreads · 02/06/2025 21:58

Opinions are like assholes, everybody's got one.

Just ignore them or tell them to bugger off. What they rather you were unemployed and claiming benefits instead? Tell them to piss off.

It is different people that have made remarks.

one friend will say how little time she has as she works full time but she has a lot of family help and a husband who doesn't work away, this can be in response to having time to do a hobby or attend something, it feels like it's a passive dig at me.

work colleagues will at times say the old" alright for some" when I leave at my finishing time.

we do live frugally and spend less on things like holidays but I'd rather that and have time now whilst they are young.

maybe I'm sensitive to it and need to toughen up!

You do

Life is about choices

You have chosen one route, others have chosen theirs

If they want to whinge on about THEIR choices, let them, its nothing to do with you and your choices

I think you're being sensitive.

You appear to be judging others for working full time and not adjusting their lives to be home with their DC.

Neither choice is right or wrong.

You do you.

Rhayra · 02/06/2025 21:50

They would hate me. I've never been full-time in my entire life (first child at 16) and work half as many hours as even you (not on benefits rich husband before someone mentions their tax money)

cinnamongirl123 · 02/06/2025 21:49

Theyre just jealous, ignore them! Why let them get to you? Everyone I know works different numbers of days/hours, I’ve never heard any judgment. Who are these people making these comments?

LimesOfBronze · 02/06/2025 21:47

Who’d be a mum, eh?

Work FT - ‘why did you have kids so other people could raise them?’

SAHM - ‘why are you setting feminism back by not working?’

Work PT - ‘why don’t you love your kids/the economy enough?’

NimbleTiger · 02/06/2025 21:47

You're not lazy. Next time the comments are made smile brightly and say ' I know I'm so lucky it's brill isn't it ' they'll soon stop.

Zoflorabore · 02/06/2025 21:45

I work 15 hours a week. I am homeschooling my autistic dd who is 14 and I also have a 22 year old ds at home who is also autistic, both have severe anxiety and OCD and I have fibromyalgia and several other conditions so it’s either 15 hours or nothing. I no longer give a flying fuck what people think of me, it took a while! They don’t pay my bills.

we all have unique circumstances and do what is best for us and our families, some people just have too much to say op.

ReplacementBusService · 02/06/2025 21:43

Miserable Miserable Cretins. Judging what?

I work full time. I'll go polish my fecking halo and pick up my award on the way out.

You work a lot of hours towards your home and family as well as the paid employment. Probably adds up to at least 100 hours. Quote them that as a figure.

Fearfulsaints · 02/06/2025 21:37

Your friend, if she is a real friend, is most likely reflecting on her own life, rather than digging at you. They say comparison is the thief of joy. She's feeling sad at not having hobby time and you are sad your partner works away and have no family support. You can both support/ sympathise with each other.

Colleagues I really think "part time hours, part time pay covers it.

Midnightlove · 02/06/2025 21:37

People are jealous. I work 15 hours a week, I just say "yeah I know, it's great 🤣"

usedtobeaylis · 02/06/2025 21:35

God you'd be judged for whatever you do. Work, don't work, work full time, work part time, work shifts, work 9-5, work two jobs, it doesn't matter, someone will judge it.

There seems to be some misconceptions on this thread also about working part time, as if it means you can magically attend anything and everything. Working part time doesn't mean you can necessarily go to something at 11am on a weekday?

CornedBeef451 · 02/06/2025 21:32

I worked 30 hours a week for a few years for the same reason. It was brilliant doing all the school runs, made life much easier.

Tell them to sod off, it’s none of their business!

Jealousy. Ignore.

taptaroundtheworld · 02/06/2025 21:28

@Fearfulsaints that makes sense.
For me, its about the pattern and people’s availability.
Shifts are unpredictable, no matter how many hours. even if you only do 1 or 2 shifts a week, your availability is changing, so how many hours you work really isn’t relevant as availability is on a case by case basis. Weekends not necessarily free.
For office hours like patterns, number and time of hours are relevant as they tend to be stable.
Condensed hours: likely 4 manic days (completely unavailable) and one free one. Find out the free one.
fulltime: weekends and after 6.
Parttime: needs to be specified (mornings/termtime/….) to get an idea
No judgement involved - I don’t care. I just want to get an idea on potential availability.

Ignore them op. I do 15 hrs school bus assistant. I get odd jibe. I say ah its great yes the hours. Lol. People love to put you down.

And these are all jobs we very much need people to do aswell as lunchtime assistants, TA's, Lollipop persons, school kitchen, cleaners etc that are part time. Not to mention all the volunteers. Exactly who do these people think are going to do all these jobs if every single one of us are out working full time.

I suppose to me it's not the full time that's the issue it's the 'standard office hours'

Both my parents did shifts and I do annualised hours so if someone says full time to me that doesn't equal 9-5.30 weekdays, so my mind doesn't automatically go there!

But I think I'm the one out of kilter not you! I think yours is the default thinking.

As someone who's always done shift work my brain does the same as yours.

@Fearfulsaints in my experience if i say “sorry, that’s during my work hours” to something like a wednesday 10am coffee morning, the assumption is that Thursday or Monday etc will work. It doesn’t, i work full time, office hours, so its weekends or after 6.
Other people work shift, mornings only, termtime only, so they say “sorry, i work mornings/termtime/shifts to indicate their working patterns. People on shifts can sometimes make 10am. People working term time can make 10am in the holidays. People working mirnings or fulltime can never make 10am.
And so on

I work 3 days a week (I do 9 hour days plus a bit of work from home over that so about 30hours a week total still) as I’m disabled - use walking aids, constant pain etc… people still say “it’s alright for some” and how easy “us part-timers” have it… some people are just idiots 😂 when I was younger, I had slightly petty replies like “yeah, I love being poor and in pain” but now I mostly eye roll and don’t bother correcting them. They won’t change their minds and their opinions won’t change my life x

Its frustrating. I worked hard for my career as well as post graduate qualifications and now I'm working a little less as I've young children. I don't claim benefits, I pay into a pension, I save, I have plans to go full time once they've finished primary school so can I not just enjoy spending time with them every day, I'm lucky my hours for in with school so I'm with them every morning and every day after school. I love it, it's great quality time. I do think some are jealous as they maybe have different lifestyles so can't afford the reduced pay but I've made sacrifices to enable my situation.

You sound like you’ve made great choices - many of my mum friends work 4/5 days a week with young children and if my industry allowed it I would love to. You / your husband did the work to develop your careers to the extent you can financially afford this so well done. I’m sure there are also choices you guys don’t get to make - fancier holidays / cars etc because of it and I respect what you’ve chosen to invest your potential excess income in (time with your children) a lot more.

MintChocCat · 02/06/2025 21:04

I work 30 hours per week and I don’t have children - it’s due to health conditions. Tell people to butt out, they’ve no right to judge you - everyone’s circumstances are different.

IReallyLoveItHere · 02/06/2025 21:03

People occasionally comment about my Fridays off, saying lucky for some etc. I say yes it's lovely other than the loss of a day's wage and that they could do it too if they wanted.

Honestly it does pee me off. Some colleagues complain (even cry) about not having enough time with their kids then have new cars and expensive holidays - so they are prioritising cars and holidays over time with their kids. They choice but it is a choice.

Maybe you should say you value being there for your kids more than the loss in wages. They're only young once. Money won't get those years back. Etc.
