It is a bit weird. Why didn't he just stream it or wait for it to come out on Amazon/Netflix.

Why should he? if he wants to watch it on the big screen then he can

Yes. It’s you. You must live a small life, expand your horizons.

Protecting you children from what? A man sitting well away from them, unable to see anything other than the back of their head in the dark? The children are statistically in more danger from the man who took them there.

Don't feed the troll spouting misogynistic shite about hysterical women when he himself is adovating hysterical, ott measure whereas the women of the forum are level-headed, non-judgemental and thoughtful

BDG007 · 03/06/2025 01:15

she said a young couple was enjoying it. Not a lone man lurking in a dark cinema at a U rated film

I find it wild that you think saying he was "lurking in the dark" is even remotely appropriate?! It's a CINEMA ffs. He's not lurking, he's watching a film. And funnily enough, they're usually dark whether it's men, women or children there.

I work with children, I am sufficiently trained in safeguarding. I can assure you that no training I have received says that men may be predators for wanting to watch a movie even if they have nobody to watch it with!!

Jesus Christ, I'm glad I don't know some of the people on here in real life!

Seriously? I'm an adult and I'm going to see Lilo and Stitch tomorrow night alone. Why should I wait a few months because me sitting by myself (in a place you're not supposed to be talking to other people anyway) is 'a bit weird' apparently?!

I have loved Disney since I was a child, these live action films are remakes of films that are incredibly nostalgic for me. Why should I only be able to watch them in secret in my own home?!

I have also been to every Disney park in the world, including a 10 night trip to Florida alone, all without children because I don't have them, there are hundreds of thousands of people at those parks that are adults without children.

Just because you wouldn't do it, doesn't mean it's weird.

Anonusername1234 · 03/06/2025 06:15

@Coffeewithtwosugars your son sounds just lovely and if you take a look at the voting here you’ll see most people wouldn’t have batted an eyelid at a man, on his own, watching a kids film. Tbh I would have smiled, loved that he was having a good time and moved swiftly on.

YankSplaining · 03/06/2025 04:44

Getting a kick out of the people saying “maybe he has learning difficulties.” As if that would be a more likely explanation than, I don’t know, he just wanted to see a movie because it sounded like fun. 😂

More possible reasons he was seeing “Lilo & Stitch” by himself:

  1. He made a bet with his friends that if he did it, it would be the subject of a Mumsnet thread within 24 hours. (Thanks for the twenty pounds, OP!)
  2. He was leaving ransom money under the rightmost seat in the third row, as instructed by his dog’s kidnappers.
  3. He’s a sewing enthusiast who got confused by “stitch.”
  4. He is Elvis in disguise - what, you actually believed he was dead? - and he came to hear his music on the soundtrack.
  5. Like Stitch, he is a genetically engineered alien, and he thinks media representation of his kind is so, so important.
BridgeNewton · 03/06/2025 03:27

I watched it with my youngest daughter at the weekend and, as a grown adult, I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed it. Let him be.

Tinytotdriver · 03/06/2025 03:22

This doesn’t sound weird!

When I was younger, me and my mum were watching Twilight in the cinema and there was a lone man sat wanking to the implied sex scene before leaving once that part ended.

Now that was weird!

But nothing in your OP sounds amiss at all. Although I understand why you’d be surprised, I know my OH would 100% say it was weird if he saw a lone male watching kids films in the cinema.

PumpkinPieAlibi · 03/06/2025 03:12

What a mean-spirited thread. And the faux naivete, the disingenuous 'oh, I didn't mean anything by it' makes worse. At least own your intentions because the truth is, if it was a woman seated there enjoying this film by herself this thread would never have been started. The insinuations were clear.

As to the hysterical mansplainer on the thread, the irony is hilarious. 😂

BDG007 · 03/06/2025 00:42

Personally I can't think of any good reason for a grown man to go to the cinema on their own to watch a U rated movie. If they're that desperate to see it they should stream it

I'm not a man, but a woman who occasionally works up the courage to go the cinema on her own.

For many years, I worked full-time and cared for three adults. They're all gone now. I have no children of my own and no siblings.

Believe it or not, sometimes I like to get out of the house. My friendship circle dwindled over the nearly thirty years that I was a carer, meaning that I mostly go out on my own.

I tend to stream films - mainly because it's cheaper than going to the cinema these days and I do fell awkward going out on my own - but occasionally I like the experience of going to the cinema.

Maybe I should spend the last years of my life rotting at home.

It's about protecting young children. Adults can go and see scary movies if they want.

Every other thread on MN is accusing men of being sex offenders but the moment a long single man goes to a U rated film all of a sudden he's an angel that is just really interested in the storyline of Frozen.

Personally I'd rather protect children

A lone adult man going to watch a U rated film on his own is odd. We all know it, even if you're arguing against it, you know full well it's odd

How arrogant to assume you know what everyone is thinking. You're not psychic and arrogance is not a nice quality.

MrsEverest · 03/06/2025 01:27

I had to move so many times for medical training and was sometimes very very very lonely. Often went to the movies alone regardless of what was on, including kids films, or to tourist places like aquariums where you don’t see many solo adults. If you get one day off every two or three weeks and you don’t know anyone, you do what you need to do.

I actually saw Megamind twice, alone, in either Darwin or cairns (don’t recall) because I enjoyed it!

There's something sinister going on here. In fact, damn creepy. Women's intuition.

Why does he have to? Why didn’t @Littlebluecreature just stream it. Why’s it ok for her but not him. Yes it’s aimed at children and families but we’ve seen so many reasons in the thread. He needed a pick me up movie, he loved the first as a young hater and wants to watch the sequel, he has a learning disability, he just needed the time to chill and this happened to be on, he likes the movie atmosphere, he wanted to get out the house and chill..

by your logic we should just shut cinemas or ban lone adults of either gender watching films.

maybe we also shouldn’t let women watch horror or action movies on their own?

no lone men at romances…

wanders off grumbling…

No... we don't "all know it".
Come on, explain it. Break it down. Use all your time and crayons.

"lurking" 🙄 nice use of emotive language there
You mean someone just sat in the cinema, watching a film?

whitewineandsun · 03/06/2025 01:16

(Worst I saw was someone saying they got a laugh reaction at one of their posts describing their experiences when it came to racism)

Fair point. That is disgusting.

Least it's out in the open on a thread though, instead of aimed at posters and presumably hoping they won't say anything.

Good riddance to the laugh react

Anybody who did that should have been banned.
