Is it just me 😂

Personally I'm delighted that MN has some rational people who aren't just calling men pedophiles and rapists for just existing and it's nice to see almost a whole thread of it

As a man I would think you were too

Almost like your real aim isn't protecting anyone but just arguing with women for fun

Well personally, I am 💯 not a man hater !
I see it all the time on Mumsnet & I always think it’s ridiculous how so many women hate men. !
They didn’t hang their coat up , divorce them 🙄 !
All that said though , I do think it’s weird a grown man watching lilo & stitch on his own , it could very well be very innocent , but it may not be , no harm in being wary of it , that’s all …

ahh the "mansplaining" comment. You mean, someone makes a good point that you can't respond to so you accuse them of "mansplaining"

You did not make a good point 😂
I’d hate to be inside your head, it sounds like a pretty terrifying place.

@Littlebluecreature why is it odd? Maybe he’s a widower, or a film critic or hasn’t got a partner or has kids running wild at home and needs a time out on his own. We need to normalise doing things by ourselves. I love my own company.

I came on to say exactly this. Also, it can take a lot of courage to go out on your own.

Plumnora · 03/06/2025 11:13

Was he threatening you in any way? Was he abusive? Have you considered that he may be autistic or have additional needs?
And yes, it's just you.

I’m very sorry, I honestly wasn’t doing it to be nasty, i’m really sorry it wasn’t my intention at all 😔

The original Lilo And Stitch was my son’s favourite movie when he was small. He went to see the new one when it came out to see how it measured up and what they’d changed.

He’s a grown man who just remembered something fondly so went to see the new version. I think it’s pretty unpleasant to judge anyone for that.

He has that Odeon subscription where he can see endless movies for £18 a month, so he’s at the cinema by himself frequently.

Penthrowingsurvivor · 03/06/2025 10:09

If people freak out here, where kids go with their PARENTS, imagine the complete meltdown when a single man goes to Minecraft movie or similarly targeting pre-teens and older, with kids going WITHOUT their parents.

Predator dream apparently.

FreezeDriedStrawberries · 03/06/2025 10:02

Littlebluecreature · 02/06/2025 23:40

EXACTLY this, thank you! I don’t understand Disney adults either

Why is it so hard to understand that we don't all like the same thing, that we all have different interests and likes?!
Is there a set list of "approved" things to like once you hit a certain age? 🙄

cheesycheesy · 03/06/2025 09:43

Let’s all laugh at the sad man on his own watching a kids film. That’s the reaction you expected op wasn’t it? I’m glad most people aren’t as cruel

WearyAuldWumman · 03/06/2025 02:38

I'm not a man, but a woman who occasionally works up the courage to go the cinema on her own.

For many years, I worked full-time and cared for three adults. They're all gone now. I have no children of my own and no siblings.

Believe it or not, sometimes I like to get out of the house. My friendship circle dwindled over the nearly thirty years that I was a carer, meaning that I mostly go out on my own.

I tend to stream films - mainly because it's cheaper than going to the cinema these days and I do fell awkward going out on my own - but occasionally I like the experience of going to the cinema.

Maybe I should spend the last years of my life rotting at home.

I'm a woman who also loves going to the cinema alone, don't let judgemental people on MN put you off going - if you look at the majority of replies it's the judgemental ones who are in the minority!
Who cares if they see it as weird, anyway?!
It's them with the problem. Trying to project their own insecurities and issues onto others who are just going on with their lives and enjoying themselves by going to the cinema.
Stick a mental finger up at them and think "blah bollocks, I'm still going anyway" that's what I do 😁

How does one tell the difference (especially in a dark cinema) between sitting watching the film and lurking in a sinister manner? I assume by the "further investigation" mentioned - what form does that take?

They've got an entire wing dedicated to these monsters in Wormwood Scrubs, don't you know?

Just between the murderers' wing and the armed robbers section, they have the secure compound where they cage all of the disgusting men who were found guilty of watching a film on their own in public that is also suitable for children, families or women on their own.

Personally, I think they should just hang these vile beasts - prison is far too good for them and just a huge waste of taxpayers' money in keeping them needlessly alive.

TaupeRaven · 03/06/2025 09:19

BDG007 · 03/06/2025 01:15

she said a young couple was enjoying it. Not a lone man lurking in a dark cinema at a U rated film

"Lurking in the dark"

Unlike all of the other patrons, who are... oh, also lurking in the dark.

Dangermoo · 03/06/2025 09:10

DoctorRoseReturns · 03/06/2025 09:07

It's far more sinister and troubling

Also quite a bit of toxic masculinity. Both by getting kicks from arguing with women and by saying men aren't "normal" for liking softer, gentler things. I guess he thinks men should only watch films with tits, explosions and cars going too fast because those are "manly"

Edited

Indeed. Well I see he's modelling himself on James Bond by his username. Sick bucket all round, really.

Rewis · 03/06/2025 09:08

Is it that he is alone? So if a pair or a group of adult men went to see it together, it wouldn't be weird?

DoctorRoseReturns · 03/06/2025 09:07

Dangermoo · 03/06/2025 09:04

Which is far more creepy than a lone man watching a film.

It's about protecting young children. Adults can go and see scary movies if they want.

Every other thread on MN is accusing men of being sex offenders but the moment a long single man goes to a U rated film all of a sudden he's an angel that is just really interested in the storyline of Frozen.

Personally I'd rather protect children

Most of the time I would agree but a grown man seeing a U rated film on his own is odd. It's worth of further investigation to see if he has a good reason for it.

Pretty sure the original Star Wars films are a U
And no one would blink at a man on his own there...

IfYouPutASausageInItItsNotAViennetta · 03/06/2025 08:41

FreezeDriedStrawberries · 03/06/2025 01:17

"lurking" 🙄 nice use of emotive language there
You mean someone just sat in the cinema, watching a film?

That reminds me of the pathetic, prejudiced (in his case also horribly racist) police officer in the old Not The Nine O'Clock News sketch - when he kept arresting a black gentleman for such 'crimes' as 'loitering with intent to use a pedestrian crossing' and 'looking at me in a funny way'.

Do any of the many reasons suggested in the thread match your idea of a good reason?

scalt · 03/06/2025 07:58

My DH loves waterslides, and goes to leisure centres with them on his own. This means that he is often queueing for them among the children (and most of the punters are children); and of course, both he and the children are almost naked, and often standing close together. Quelle horreur! Unlike the cinema, it is of course a brightly lit area with lots of witnesses, including the uniformed staff of the leisure centre, but he says he has sometimes thought "what does this look like"? It is sad that men going about their business have to think like this.

Lazygardener · 03/06/2025 07:31

Oh dear. I went to see Paddington 3 (and 1 and 2 for that matter) all alone, sitting there in the dark. I had no idea this struck fear into the hearts of other people, or that I would be assumed to have learning difficulties! It’s a judgemental world, it seems.

Not sure if you’re a man or woman but it’s only the men we need to judge apparently.
