I agree. We all have to be wary of those who have criminal intent in our midst; but it's very sad if we're going from an assumption that everybody whom we think 'shouldn't be there', even though there are no actual restrictions whatsoever, is likely a criminal.

This is the same mindset that various police forces have allowed to dominate for a long time: repeatedly stopping young black men (but not young white men) because "We don't know yet if he's guilty of any crime, but... y'know".

It pervades elsewhere too - even when there's no suspicion of actual crime - where you get terrified people on a plane when the pilot welcomes them over the loudspeaker and she has a clearly female voice; or taking their cars to be maintained elsewhere when they learn that a garage employs female mechanics - just because they only want to know that they'll be safe out on the roads, you see.

Often, prejudice against people who are different from us and those who live their lives differently from how we think that they should is just much easier than actually engaging our brains and having a sense of proportion instead.

I taught in an open prison, which housed mainly child sex offenders. That doesn't mean I would be automatically alert to a man watching this movie on his own. The manipulative mindset I could spot once they tried to enter into dialogue with me, yes.

LemonOwl · 02/06/2025 23:33

I can remember my Dad chucking my toddler's Postman Pat rucksack on his back when we went through the airport as he was trying to help me. I saw a middle aged man point and laugh. Which made me laugh too. We all see thinks that aren't quite right.

I thought we were talking about lilo and stitch , which I thought was a kids movie. I don't know as I haven't seen it. But from what I've seen advertised etc.. there seems to be some cute characters in it and I'd have thought the target audience was primary school age. Certainly my youngest has mentioned it. I presumed it was along the lines of trolls, smurfs, sonic, super mario, that sort of thing, rather than hunger games (which I thought was a 15?)

I genuinely don't know any men that would go to a matinee performance of a kids film (trolls/smurfs/sonic/etc....) by themself. I'm sure plenty of men do, just no-one I know. Definitely not DH and you asked about husbands and partners. I just don't know men that like these kinds of films enough to watch them by themself in a cinema mid-afternoon.

I'm not really sure what you point is.

I've already stated that my view is skewed by my profession (which has involved working with numerous sex offenders) and the fact that no adult men I know would watch these kind of films by themself.

As I've also said, I'm sure some men do watch these films innocently at the cinema.

Lilo and Stitch is Disney. It's not primarily kids

It's also a remake of a 20 year old film, it had a certain level of nostalgia.

Cute characters aren't just in kids films. There are some definitely not kids films which have cute characters in.

Hunger Games is a 12.

Sonic, Super Mario, Minecraft are prime examples of things people think are for kids but have a huge adult fanbase...

And again just because YOU don't know anyone, plenty of people here DO know someone who would. It makes no difference to what YOU know (and I suspect you're wrong but the men you know wouldn't say because of your judgmental attitude)

Even if he was a paedo (and it's kind of offensive to assume he must be), what can you do about it? Nothing. They walk and sit among us, in their hundreds.

And statistically it is more likely to be the adult who is there with the child 🤷🏼‍♀️

Butterbly · 02/06/2025 23:24

As an aside my bil watched it alone this weekend in order to check if it was suitable for a family trip

It has themes of adoption, social services etc so a lot of adoptive parents are pre watching it to check how they feel it would play out with their children

Butterbly · 02/06/2025 23:22

Lilo and stitch isn't a simple kids film

The adult market is estimated to account for 70% of viewers and it's performed particularly well in adult demographics up to age 52.

Partially because it was a massive film 25 ish years ago. So it has the nostalgia of the 30-40 ish year olds that it was big for, but also their parents who likely spent a lot of time watching it as a family

LemonOwl · 02/06/2025 23:21

Ajayo · 02/06/2025 23:16

No-one is saying every man goes to the cinema alone or watches Disney movies without kids present, but the point is it’s not that rare either - as many people do.

The fact your husband would not do this is beside the point. We are all different.

Edited

I'm not just talking about my DH. I just don't know any men or women that go to the cinema to watch a kids film on their own. I have learnt something new today that it is a thing.

But plenty of people have said men they DO know would do this

Again, Disney films are not "little kid" films

Marvel, Star Wars, Hunger Games, Harry Potter have all been considered "kids" films but have large adult, often male, fanbases

Or are you only attracted to men who watch films where things go Boom and everyone says Fuck because it's obvious ADULT then

To be honest my DH wouldn't go to the cinema on his own to watch anything. He also wouldn't watch a Disney film on his own in the house without me or the Grandchildren.

Guardians of the Galaxy we love though.

I don't watch Disney films though myself. I have watched Christmas Grinch a lot one Summer when babysitting Granddaughter.

I enjoyed that.

I'd be extremely surprised if DH went to the cinema to watch a matinee screening of a kids film! I honestly don't know any men in my family or friend group that would do this by themself. I would think DH was having some kind of breakdown to be honest, if he did this!! I'd think this just because it would b v out of character for him. I'm not really attracted to the type of guys that are into little kids movies. But if I was, I guess I wouldn't feel shocked.

I don't think anyone (though I did miss a few pages of the thread)! has said this man must be up to no good. Most people have said it's probably innocent. However, some people, like myself, have said it's ok to wonder why an adult man would be watching a kids movie. And given my background working with sex offenders, I particularly (and some other posters) have pointed out that this is something that people with a sexual interest in kids might do ... and we've also raised that.its ok to question and think to yourself that it's odd...

What is depressing is assuming that a lone man watching a kid's film... during term time when barley any kids are about... is a threat and should be treated with suspicion.

There is a difference between assuming this man is a threat, and being alert to the possibility he could be.

Anything out of the ordinary may alert suspicion. And that's ok.

As I said before. When I walk my dogs and see a group of kids with hoodies smoking, I don't assume they are bad kids. They probably are all lovely. But I am alert to the possibility they might be up to know good, and being alert to that possibility just means I can be a bit more cautious and aware of my surroundings.

I thought it was unusual, I still think ‘Oh wow a man in his 40’s alone with no kids, watching a kids film’ it’s just not something i’d do (the kids film) without my kid (purely because i’m not a fan enough of kids films to go to the cinema on my own to see it) but I can see now others are/do. I can’t think of much worse 😂but each to their own.
Nothing sinister at all and was quite surprised when people were posting that, no kids there aside from me and Dd and a couple and their son. He sat a bit away and was the only one who stayed right until watching the credits etc and we all were leaving, just must be a big fan!

Omg, well I didn't see this post before I commented! He stayed until the end of the credits!! He's definitely up to no good - not the fact that there could be a scene at the end of credits 🙄

For all you know the guy has learning disabilities/autism and thought that it would be quieter to see it today and therefore better for him. Or he could just want to enjoy a film that doesn't say lone men are not allowed to see it. Nowhere does it say it's just for kids. Disney is for all.

Maybe stop judging other people and focus on your own shit.

what is depressing is knowing there are child sex offenders out there that constantly push their boundaries and really shouldn’t be living in the community or in the very least be tagged but rarely are

it’s more comfortable not knowing tbh

I bet you're one of those people that bitch about adults going to Disney parks without kids.

Which me and my husband do. Better alert the FBI!
