People over 55 (or younger), what things do you avoid doing now?

For me, it's going up stairs due to mobility issues. We are thinking of moving to a bungalow or getting a stairlift here. I find getting upstairs in other buildings very difficult so avoid it.
I would be interested in what other people avoid doing.

@CarrigDubh - I am a little older and feel the need to get into weight training. How did you get started? It's so daunting as a complete novice!

I joined a gym that had small group training, it's pricey but worth it to me

TheLostStargazer · 03/06/2025 08:16

Younger than 55 but I avoid eating too much sugar. I really feel it in my body the next day. Especially getting out of bed and if I have to head downstairs straight away.
The difference no sugar makes me realise how bad it is for me.
I also avoid feeling guilty for watching tv during the day now and happily watch stuff on my day off.

I never liked late nights, but it's good other people now feel the same

Neighbours came for dinner. All done by 10.15pm and that suited me just fine

MrsMoastyToasty · 03/06/2025 08:11

Going into the office (I'm still working).

I'm confused by the title of the thread. 'People over 55 - or younger.' Is that not just everyone then? Confused

Good point 😀

I am over 55 and there are things I do more of: weights, fitness classes, aqua fit etc. In terms of avoiding things: spending time with people who are complete bellends and having the confidence to say, no, I won’t be doing that without explaining why, as I don’t need to justify my decisions.

This is me too, I started weight training at 58. Also, I just say no, thanks very much, but I'm not in the mood/ don't fancy it etc. It's fantastic!

Flying to Europe for a short holiday of a few days. I'll go for a fortnight and build a trip to an interesting city into the holiday. But I'm not getting up at 4am to get to the airport for a couple of days "break" no thank you.

I'm determined to stay in my 3 storey house for as long as possible.

Flavourful · 03/06/2025 07:53

I went through a stage of this, no I can’t won’t do that. Oh no! It’s not for me. At about the age of 55 or earlier thinking I’m getting old.
then something happened. I realised I still had a life and I wanted to live it. I went on a hot air balloon. I went on a quad bike, I went on a dirty filthy buggy run and got covered in so much mud I couldn’t see!
I’ve realised that if I’m going to die I’m going to do it enjoying myself. I’d still not get on halve the rides the kids go on but I seem to have a new zest for life and saying yes go on then book it, just buck it, is my new motto!
live life we’re not here long

NancyJoan · 03/06/2025 07:48

I don’t get drunk any more. It’s not worth the sleepless night and the two day hangover. That’s about it though. I’m v active, busy, enjoy going out in the evenings, walk a lot etc.

Londonrach1 · 03/06/2025 07:48

I don't waste time on things I don't want to do now. I've learnt about toxic people and now avoid them. I spend a lot more time with family and real friends. I'm not over 55 just just hit the 50s. I also worry less about things as it gets sorted.

Neededa · 03/06/2025 07:38

Behaving ‘well’. I drink, smoke and eat copious amounts of chocolate.
I am child free so don’t have to worry about staying around for their sake. I like it here well enough but I just want to do what I want to do.
Have had a hip replacement, probably will need another one, but will pay for it myself. It’s rotten when physical things impact your life, just before I had my osteoarthritic joint replaced I realised it was stopping me from enjoying things I loved like international travel. That is horrible so I am making the most of that while I can.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 03/06/2025 07:23

Stopped washing my hair every day - menopause has actually improved my hair and it looks better 1 or 2 days after a wash. More free time in the morning (or more lie ins!).

Also can’t tolerate much alcohol anymore, two glasses of wine makes me feel rough and causes instant weight gain/water retention for a couple of days

Westfacing · 03/06/2025 07:00

Going against the grain here - I'm 70 and still drinking wine but do eat very healthily so it all evens out!

I avoid looking too closely in the mirror, particularly when wearing my specs 😀

Flensburg · 03/06/2025 06:45

I'm 55 in a couple of months.
I live in a house with three floors, and this year am moving to a dormer bungalow. I am up and down stairs all day, but now I have issues affecting balance and vertigo, making this more difficult. So I am moving somewhere I can live all on one floor if I need to.
I have given up lounging on a recliner as it triggers sciatica caused by prolapsed discs. So I now have upright armchairs.
Tbh, it's hard enough developing health conditions, without some people assuming it's from not trying hard enough.

Rh0dedenr0n · 03/06/2025 06:23

I stopped caring what anyone thinks
Wear a bra a lot less
Very careful walking down stairs and pay close attention to uneven terrain
Less makeup
Prioritise getting more sleep, where possible
Try and avoid sitting on hard seating if I can (piles)

Nothing. Physically, I’m in pretty good shape in my mid 50s and fitter than at any. time since my 20s.

I was going to write ‘fortunately’, but it’s not just luck. I also look after myself, maintain a healthy weight, 10k+ steps every day, eat sensibly, don’t smoke, don’t sunbathe, only drink alcohol one day a week etc etc. So many of the things which have a big effect on our health & mobility as we get older are lifestyle choices which are entirely within our own control.

There's a level of luck that you aren't fighting off genetic conditions or your body hasn't been adversely affected by your working life. It's fortunate that you haven't had any accidents, or been left with lingering symptoms because of post viral infections. You might be lucky to not have to live with damp, especially after having the genetic risk of lung conditions. Then there's MS etc. I've only recently had experience of someone (DP) needing a stoma. I'm on the FB page and I never realised the dangers of inflammatory bowel conditions. As said, I hope your smug bubble isn't burst.

Annierob · 02/06/2025 23:34

I can’t drink alcohol any more. Makes me feel sick.

charabang · 02/06/2025 23:25

Late 50s and I don't give a flying fig about my eyebrows. Can't see to do them and too tight to pay someone else. Fortunately they are blonde and I have a long fringe.

MummoMa · 02/06/2025 22:59

I'm 51 and refuse to stop doing anything physical until my body forces me to stop. The only thing that comes to mind is I can't cope with broken sleep so well, so no more midnight movies for me, but otherwise not much has changed.

HeyWiggle · 02/06/2025 21:17

i still Exercise daily, as I have done since my mid 30s but I now focus on lifting heavy weights, flexibility and some cardio. This means my core and balance is much better then it was. I drink less often and smaller amounts, I eat healthier and eat out more.

SeriousTissues · 02/06/2025 21:17

56 here. Won’t go back to a stressful job following redundancy 4 years ago. And that’s all I can think of!

I have a lot of msk issues so I have to keep moving all the time so i like an active job nowadays. Won’t go on long coach journeys ever again! Not that I’ve done many but I did one last year and could barely stand having sat for so long!

Have rejoined the gym to ensure I’m staying strong. Will only drink a glass or two of alcohol nowadays but I’ve not drunk much since having my child 14 years ago.

Wallywobbles · 02/06/2025 21:06

I’m very aware that “use it or loose it” is a very real issue. My DMIL has been banned from leaving the house as she keeps going arse over tit on her very sloped uneven outside area. She can barely walk now as a result. She refused to use a walker due to pride and now the opportunity is gone.
