There's something racist about toilet provision in the UK.

Am I being unreasonable to think there's something racist about 'oh, women and men can use the same toilets' here in the UK, when in developing countries and refugee camps, providing clean, safe and separate facilities for girls and women is seen to be of the utmost importance - because we know those foreign fellas will prey on them every chance they get; peeping, assaulting, you name it. Our British chaps, though, wouldn't say boo to a goose! Perfectly safe. Won't cause a moment's unease. Totally trustworthy, every man jack of them.

I think I see what you're getting at. However, I think the TRA position isn't that men and women can safely use toilets together, but that TWAW and should use the women's because they're not safe in the men's

There are women who cannot used shared spaces for religious reasons, and yes, many of them are not white…….. so by implication, gender neutral toilets could be considered racist.

Thats before we get to the finding, based on my own experience and reports from others, that gender neutral toilets are often messier than ‘the ladies’. Whilst wondering why some men can’t be bothered to lift the lid is a separate issue, it is yet another reason why many women prefer separate lavatories.

What????

IpsyUpsyDaisyDoos · 31/05/2025 07:09

How is it racist to protect spaces we already have just because it's different in a different country?

Is it racist to complain about the rising cost of food because people in other countries have less access to food?

Devilsmommy · 31/05/2025 07:08

Sexist not racist

Genevieva · 31/05/2025 07:07

I don’t think you understand what ‘racist’ means.

Incidentally, The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 mandate that separate male and female toilet facilities are provided by employers unless each toilet is in a separate, lockable room. This includes changing and washing facilities if needed. on the whole you will see the same in other settings where you are not an employee too (separate or enclosed).

The issue we have been dealing with is not an assumption that British men are all gentlemen, but a coordinated attack on the definition of ‘woman’ and therefore who is legally allowed to use those protected spaces. We now have a definitive answer: biological women.

And I suspect it would be vanishingly rare to have a Trans identifying Man in third world countries. But thinking about it I do wonder if some of the pro Trans social warriors would advocate differently in the situation described . Has got me thinking.

Racist? Sorry but no.

PlasticAcrobat · 31/05/2025 07:02

I don't think it is really helpful to introduce accusations of racism into the discussion (except where there is actual evidence of racism, of course). It creates the impression of co-opting the difficulties that racialised people face as a result of racism, and using their difficulties to further a different struggle.

Think of how cynical and disrespectful of racialised people it feels when the TRAs make ridiculous claims about the alleged racism of gc people -- the fake claims that gc views rest on racist aesthetic bodily standards, etc.

No idea why you think it’s racist, but you’re right that women should have their own space yes

Helpmeplease2025 · 31/05/2025 06:56

Women should always have separate toilets from men.

Koalafan · 31/05/2025 06:55

I don't think it's necessarily racist, but we do need to protect spaces which are only for biological women.
