There's something racist about toilet provision in the UK.

Am I being unreasonable to think there's something racist about 'oh, women and men can use the same toilets' here in the UK, when in developing countries and refugee camps, providing clean, safe and separate facilities for girls and women is seen to be of the utmost importance - because we know those foreign fellas will prey on them every chance they get; peeping, assaulting, you name it. Our British chaps, though, wouldn't say boo to a goose! Perfectly safe. Won't cause a moment's unease. Totally trustworthy, every man jack of them.

This is how I understand the op"s point, too. How can Amnesty claim that mixed sex toilets are safe here, but not in India? Are the men 'safer' here? Could they justify that stance without being racist?

Yeah I’m curious. How will they justify this? I wonder if there’s any literature on this online 🤔

ExtraOnions · 31/05/2025 09:21

I caught a Train last week, where the toilets are used by men and women - not at all sexist or racist

Our local cafe has one toilet, for men and women - not racist or sexist

My workplace has neutral toilets, where the same space is shared … not racist or sexist.

Thank you. You put that a wee bit better than I did! Mind you, Action Aid told me that they 'acknowledge that there is no such thing as a biological woman or a biological man' - I stopped giving them money. In developing countries Action Aid acknowledges that there are such people though, because they provide separate facilities for them. Somebody please make it make sense!

You know what I did think this was a bit of a stretch Op when I first saw this thread posted, but now I’ve came back and seen more context I think you may actually have a point.

It would be interesting to ask these organisations their reasoning behind it. I may reach out and do that.

Don't be silly.

Bringing race into absolutely everything is getting extremely wearing.

This is about the UK. We're so liberal our heads have split open. What we're now realising is this is costing women and girls their basic rights.

All minorities cannot be accomodated. Most other countries realise this. They're also not afraid of accusations. Here In the UK we are utterly terrified of being accused of being an 'ist or 'phobic. So we lay down in the road and let ourselves be mown over. Most other countries have self respect.

How is this in any way relevant to what Op has said? I’m not necessarily instantly in support of what she said and I’m still thinking
it through but I don’t see how your point disproves what she says. She is actually saying more should be done for women’s and girls here from what I can understand.

Theres something off about you advocating for women’s rights at the same time telling other disadvantage groups to pipe down.

Are you concerned that the words sexist and misogyny are thrown about too much? Or are those “accusations” okay?

But this is not another country. This is organisations both campaigning for single sex toilets in some countries and mixed sex toilets in others. The OP is rightly calling out the racism in this approach. Why are some men “safe” to share mixed sex spaces and some not? Why are they not campaigning for mixed se provision globally?

Dontlletmedownbruce · 31/05/2025 09:12

I don't think racism is the issue here. The criminal justice system is a factor and while it's flawed here, there is a system and many rapists and predators are convicted. If we had zero protection, life would be a lot more dangerous for women. On top of that there are cultural issues in some places so even if the criminal system was in place, there would be a shame in reporting and the instances would be low, depending on the country and culture. There are some cultures that are more misogynistic of course and probably some that are much more violent towards women but I don't think its as simple as us v foreigners as there are 1000s of different cultures to consider with a huge variety of norms.

Viviennemary · 31/05/2025 09:12

What total nonsense.

TakeMe2Insanity · 31/05/2025 09:10

Helpmeplease2025 · 31/05/2025 06:56

Women should always have separate toilets from men.

This.

The issue isn’t remotely racist. To bring race into this or the plight of people in war torn countries is a ridiculous comparison.

AnotherName2025 · 31/05/2025 09:09

That stretch must be incredibly painful

PaulKnickerless · 31/05/2025 09:08

Yes it doesn’t make sense at all. Women deserve safe facilities wherever they are in the world.

The consequences of allowing men into women’s facilities in the UK are that vulnerable women, who are already some of the most disadvantaged on Earth will self-exclude from activities that could benefit them and their families. Why charities should fight for the rights of predominantly white men is beyond comprehension.

With that logic, surely it’s racist at against British women for not campaigning for them to have the same level of dignity that they campaign for women to have in India. I’d say it’s inconsistent. Hypocritical even. But not racist. They aren’t singling Indian men out for worse treatment because they are Indian. They are protecting the rights of Indian men and women to single sex spaces.

So UK women don’t deserve single sex spaces? Why? And yes it is racist. They are saying British men can be trusted to behave in a mixed sex spaces but UK men can. How is that not racist?

PaulKnickerless · 31/05/2025 09:02

That’s ridiculous of Action Aid. They will not get any further money from me either. What a complete lack of empathy for some of the most vulnerable women on Earth, who supposedly are their beneficiaries. I would love to see legal action taken against them and other charities like them.

SA and rape in refugee camps is sadly really common. Women I worked with told me they used the toilets in pairs or groups, but it was still risky, especially at night. Many were SA survivors, having to live with the shame that brings as well as losing almost everything to war, including family members. 😔

I will absolutely fight for their right to single sex spaces, and for any other woman who needs them.

Pluvia · 31/05/2025 09:02

I think you mean that Amnesty International (and various other charities involved in the developing world) are racist when they call for urgent single-sex toilet and washing facilities for women in developing countries but say that women in the UK and Europeshould be willing to share with any man who wants to have a wank while hearing a woman pee in the cubicle next to his, or who wants to go through the sanpro bin looking for bloody tampons and pads to take as trophies. (Sorry to have to mention this, I know it's gross, but it's documented.)

The racism is about Amnesty implying that men in developing countries are rapists and a danger to women, while arguing that in the UK and elsewhere in Europe men are no danger at all and women don't need to protect their single-sec rights. And then there's the misogyny: they seem to care about the voiceless, downtrodden women in the developing countries but not about women once they've achieved some rights and a voice and can speak out. They really don't like western women speaking out.

PonkyPonky · 31/05/2025 08:31

You’d have to live under a rock to think India was safe for women. The sexual crime statistics are unbelievable there and bear in mind how much goes unreported. Women are absolutely less safe in India. It’s not racist to say that.

I have a feeling the numbers might put UK as same or even more dangerous if you work it out per capita and include the assumed level of unreported rapes. Which is giving me goosebumps

ParmaVioletts · 31/05/2025 08:47

@littleburn has anyone sent them the Trans male offending stats.

Incredible isn't it the most vulnerable women in the world still fall under men of any sort.

ParmaVioletts · 31/05/2025 08:46

Not rascit but definitely sexist there are never enough female loos anywhere, always queues but men's loo are free to walk in and out

Middleagedstriker · 31/05/2025 08:32

user101101 · 31/05/2025 08:20

I get what you mean op. Maybe racism isn’t quite the right word. Cognitive dissonance it is for sure.

i mean sadly we’re fighting for safe toilets just like in the third world.

Around 1.4 billion people have no access to a private toilet and around 2 billion have no access to clean water in their home. It's hardly the same fight. I think it's a bit disgusting to equate the two

LadyKenya · 31/05/2025 08:32

Allthebestgone · 31/05/2025 07:03

And I suspect it would be vanishingly rare to have a Trans identifying Man in third world countries. But thinking about it I do wonder if some of the pro Trans social warriors would advocate differently in the situation described . Has got me thinking.

Well of course you have people who identify as the opposite sex to themselves in developing Countries. Why on Earth would it be rare?Hmm

PonkyPonky · 31/05/2025 08:31

Annoyedone · 31/05/2025 07:30

The strange thing is… Amnesty International are campaigning for women to have single sex toilets in India but mixed sex toilets in the UK. If that’s not them being racist and implying Indian men are somehow more dangerous to women then what is it? It can’t be because of the women’s religious beliefs, because they are expecting Indian women in the UK to use mixed sex toilets so why do they believe Indian woman in India need single sex toilets but not those in the UK?

BallerinaRadio · 31/05/2025 08:30

The biggest problem in the UK is a lack of toilet provisions, they just closed all the public toilets and we all just accepted it.

But you keep on with your race or man baiting I'm not really sure which it is you're aiming for here

If anyone at Action Aid actually said this (not that I don’t believe you) it just goes to show how utterly clueless so many people are about basic biology.

Helpmeplease2025 · 31/05/2025 08:03

Just because it’s ‘safer’ than the third world, doesn’t mean women should have to share a bathroom with a biological man. It doesn’t matter what you perceive the risk is.

Thank you!

Action Aid told me that they 'acknowledge that there is no such thing as a biological woman or a biological man'

WHAT…???!!!!!!

Can you provide a source, @The13thFairy - this is outrageous… I certainly wouldn’t give to them again if this is true.

I wrote to them asking about single sex spaces for women and that was in their reply. I said they wouldn't be getting another penny from me. Their next letter informed me that when they said 'women' they included 'trans women' so I fixed that for them - when they said 'women' they included men. I repeated - not another penny. I can't show you the letter but I won't have been the only person here to have received one. If you send them money do some checking of your own.
