2nd Date, he embarrassed me in a restaurant

Am I over reacting here? I suspect I might be.

1st date went well, 2nd date today. We went for for late/early dinner. nice restaurant. We got talking about Austria, Switzerland etc and he said “I can yodel”. I just laughed so he said “I can show you?” So I laughed again and said “in the middle of a restaurant?”

He then started yodelling loudly. I swear everyone turned around and looked at us. I’m normally pretty passive and would usually just quietly die inside but on this occasion I was beyond embarrassed, absolutely mortified and snapped “Shush!”

He laughed and said “what?” So I said “seriously? We’re in the middle of a restaurant”. He said sorry (whilst still laughing) and tried to change the subject but I couldn’t get past it. Who does that?

I don’t like being centre of attention and yes I embarrass easy. I ended up going home early as I just couldn’t stop thinking about it. He’s messaged me since asking if everything is ok, I don’t think he’s actually associating my change in mood to the yodelling incident!! Making me think maybe I’m over reacting??

Rude to the other patrons and very attention seeking. Nope.

Viviennemary · 30/05/2025 22:39

It would be the end for me. What an idiot.

Interesting that certain posters are describing this as being 'fun'.

To me, disturbing other people eating their food and own conversations is not 'fun'.
It''s deeply inconsiderate.

A big thumbs down to attention seeking show offs.

But surely the point of eating out in a restaurant is to be with other people as well as eating a nice meal?
E.g. when the waiting staff sing happy birthday to a diner, is it really an issue to other diners who see it as disturbing them and interrupting their conversations? Personally I like seeing things like this.
Personally I wouldn't yodel but I wouldn't care if someone did it for ten seconds in a restaurant. My life is so quiet I'd probably dine out on that story another time.

The OP's date sounds like he's someone who isn't self conscious and is fun.
They don't sound compatible though and for both their sakes, its probably better not to date again because they will end up being too critical of one another.

Would you consider letting him churn your milk on a 3rd date ?

Is this a euphemism?

GravyBoatWars · 30/05/2025 22:29

Compatibility issue.

There's a spectrum for how people feel about standing out/being different in public and it sounds like you're on one extreme and he's on the other. In the same way you can't really imagine being so unbothered by it and thinking that was fun he just can't relate to it causing sustained upset. He stopped when you asked him to then moved on but the idea that you were still not over it later didn't occur to him in the same way that you were blindsided when he actually yodelled in public. Neither of you are wrong but I'd expect you're too far apart on the spectrum to be a good match. There doesn't need to be a villain in every story.

100% agree. Making an embarrassing scene in a restaurant and being absolutely inconsiderate to the other customers really isn’t my idea of ‘fun’

Its attention seeking, cringey and humiliating.

Quite so. If I was one of the other diners, I would feel extremely uncomfortable. Being so noisy in a ’nice’ restaurant that others turn and look at you is embarrassing for everyone. This is who he is - let him find someone else. He needs someone equally inconsiderate and lacking self-awareness and social skills, and you need someone better.

DeSoleil · 30/05/2025 22:24

Well he’s a bit of a prat and you’re very uptight so it’s not really going to work out.

Sosigsandwich · 30/05/2025 22:24

I'm practically immune to embarrassment and would find this hysterical. On the other hand my Husband would have walked out mortified.

Zone2NorthLondon · 30/05/2025 20:19

I expect he’s that performative type - only me,speak as I find, comedy socks and impressions

Spot on. Run… fast!

ThisIcyHare · 30/05/2025 22:09

I would find it absolutely hilariously mortifying. Have you asked if he did this for a bet with some friends? I know I’d be dying inside but would quickly laugh it off and get over it! He sounds like a hoot and like he doesn’t take himself too seriously, give him a chance!

StarDolphins · 30/05/2025 22:09

Honestly, this wouldn’t bother me! I really do like an outrageous person!(as long as it’s not all the time🤣) I like a person that doesn’t give a shit (again, within reason) and yodelling is up there for me.

However, if you’re embarrassed, you’re embarrassed. Tell him to do it at his mum’s!

This would give me such intolerable ick. There’s a very particular type of man who behaves this way, and also probably does historical re-enactments at the weekend / owns a selection of onesies / has weirdly long fingernails filed to points.

I know exactly what you mean, I dumped a guy in my 20’s who was like this including the horrible fingernails (he claimed he needed them to play his guitar properly - ugh, my vag said nope!)

See he sounds fab to me but it takes all sorts to make a world .

There’s someone for everyone, as they say 😁 (Not for me though sadly).

Bloody hell, you’re a bit uptight 😂 I’d think that was bloody hilarious if my date started yodelling. No wonder you’re single.

It's no wonder he's single!

Yodelling in a restaurant? Pillock! Too much Mr Bean and not enough Mr Darcy for me.

If the topic of France had arisen, I bet he'd have played the Marseillaise with his armpit.

BunnyLake · 30/05/2025 22:02

BMW6 · 30/05/2025 19:46

Well I'd give him a second chance as he now knows you were embarrassed, but one more "performance" and I'd be walking away.

Yes this. Any more embarrassing nonsense and you’ll know absolutely that he’s not for you but it may be worth giving him another chance. I can’t stand being embarrassed by a bloke’s behaviour. I’ve had a couple of bf’s like that and it’s a total turn off. You don’t want to be dating someone where you or others say ‘you can’t take him anywhere’. Next strike and he’s out.

Grin

lol 😂

jenny38 · 30/05/2025 22:01

Yes you are over reacting. This is not a deal breaker. He sounds funny and confident, he just misjudged it slightly. We have all said or done the wrong thing, especially when nervous.

Anyahyacinth · 30/05/2025 22:01

Ponoka7 · 30/05/2025 19:45

I don't think that you are compatible and you don't seem to be able to be honest, or communicate what is bothering you, so any relationship isn't going to work.

Why would I climb out of a window when there’s a perfectly decent door to leave through?

Oh apologies. I misunderstood. When you said you wouldn't have returned I assumed you meant you wouldn't have left through the door you came in.
